Future Fiction #231 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Orbit leads the pack with cover reveals this week, plus a new thriller by a favorite author, take a look:

Sumptuous and addictive, An Education in Malice is a dark academia tale of blood, secrets and insatiable hungers from Sunday Times bestselling author S.T. Gibson, author of the cult hit A Dowry of Blood.

Deep in the forgotten hills of Massachusetts stands Saint Perpetua’s College. Isolated and ancient, it is not a place for timid girls. Here, secrets are currency, ambition is lifeblood, and strange ceremonies welcome students into the fold.

On her first day of class, Laura Sheridan is thrust into an intense academic rivalry with the beautiful and enigmatic Carmilla. Together, they are drawn into the confidence of their demanding poetry professor, De Lafontaine, who holds her own dark obsession with Carmilla.

But as their rivalry blossoms into something far more delicious, Laura must confront her own strange hungers. Tangled in a sinister game of politics, bloodthirsty professors and dark magic, Laura and Carmilla must decide how much they are willing to sacrifice in their ruthless pursuit of knowledge.

An Education in Malice by S.T. Gibson. Releases in February 2024 from Orbit. I was so excited to see this cover revealed last week! This is (I believe) a companion book to Gibson’s A Dowry of Blood, which I loved. Gibson is going to have a good 2024, because she also has a new series starter coming out from Angry Robot.

Jun Ironway, hacker, con artist, and only occasional thief, has gotten her hands on a piece of contraband that could set her up for life: a video that implicates the powerful Nightfoot family in a planet-wide genocide seventy-five years ago. The Nightfoots control the precious sevite that fuels interplanetary travel through three star systems. And someone is sure to pay handsomely for anything that could break their hold.

Of course, anything valuable is also dangerous. The Kingdom, the ruling power of the three star systems, is inextricably tied up in the Nightfoots’ monopoly-and they can’t afford to let Jun expose the truth. They task two of their most brutal clerics with hunting her down: preternaturally stoic Chono, and brilliant hothead Esek, who also happens to be the heir to the Nightfoot empire.

But Chono and Esek are haunted in turn by a figure from their shared past, known only as Six. What Six truly wants is anyone’s guess. And the closer they get to finding Jun, the surer Chono is that Six is manipulating them all-and that they are heading for a bloody confrontation that no one will survive unscathed.

These Burning Stars (The Kingdom Trilogy #1) by Bethany Jacobs. Releases in October 2023 from Orbit. Ooh, a new sci-fi trilogy! Jacobs is a debut author, I believe, and this sounds like it has a lot of potential:-)

When Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore dies, she’s not only North Carolina’s richest woman, she’s also its most notorious. The victim of a famous kidnapping as a child and a widow four times over, Ruby ruled the tiny town of Tavistock from Ashby House, her family’s estate high in the Blue Ridge mountains. In the aftermath of her death, that estate—along with a nine-figure fortune and the complicated legacy of being a McTavish—pass to her adopted son, Camden.

But to everyone’s surprise, Cam wants little to do with the house or the money—and even less to do with the surviving McTavishes. Instead, he rejects his inheritance, settling into a normal life as an English teacher in Colorado and marrying Jules, a woman just as eager to escape her own messy past.

Ten years later, Camden is a McTavish in name only, but a summons in the wake of his uncle’s death brings him and Jules back into the family fold at Ashby House. Its views are just as stunning as ever, its rooms just as elegant, but coming home reminds Cam why he was so quick to leave in the first place.

Jules, however, has other ideas, and the more she learns about Cam’s estranged family—and the twisted secrets they keep—the more determined she is for her husband to claim everything Ruby once intended for him to have.

But Ruby’s plans were always more complicated than they appeared. As Ashby House tightens its grip on Jules and Camden, questions about the infamous heiress come to light. Was there any truth to the persistent rumors following her disappearance as a girl? What really happened to those four husbands, who all died under mysterious circumstances? And why did she adopt Cam in the first place? Soon, Jules and Cam realize that an inheritance can entail far more than what’s written in a will––and that the bonds of family stretch far beyond the grave.

The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins. Releases in January 2024 from St. Martin’s Press. I read Hawkins’ The Villa earlier this year and really enjoyed it, so I was excited to find out she has another book coming out next January. The blurb feels a little convoluted to me, but I can’t wait to read it!

  1. I got an arc of The Heiress this week. I’ve read her previous adult releases and really enjoyed The Villa the most so far, although Reckless Girls was a solid read as well. I enjoyed A Dowry of Blood and this Gibson book has a beautiful cover. It sure is getting a lot of hype so I’m curious to see what it is all about.

I got an ARC of The Heiress as well. And I’m very curious to see what Gibson comes up with, after A Dowry of Blood.

  2. I love the sound of These Burning Stars. And if an AI had any part in writing the blurb of The Heiress – I’d sack it… I hope you enjoy all these offerings, Tammy:)).

I never thought of the possibility of an AI writing a blurb! I can’t imagine that happening, but I guess you never know…

  3. I saw the cover reveal for An Education in Malice was floored, it’s so beautiful! I’m extremely excited for this book, and all that’s coming from Gibson! I’m so intrigued by the other two, as well, I’ll have to keep them all on my radar.

  4. An Education in Malice sounds like just my kinda read. I haven’t read A Dowry of Blood yet but it has been on my TBR for a while. I need to make work of that!

These Burning Stars sounds like a good one too. I love that it has a character that is preternaturally stoic and a character that’s a brilliant hothead. Seems like a good fit!

I’ve never read a Rachel Hawkins book but I must say that all her books always sound so good. And The Heiress is no different. I’m really curious about it now!

  5. While I wasn’t completely sold on Dowry of Blood, I did have An Education in Malice on my list. I’m willing to give it a try even if it is a companion, since the premise sounds different enough!

    • Tammy

It’s not a sequel, and I think it’s based on the vampire story Carmilla. I’m excited:-)

You’re not the only one who is iffy about dark academia, I’m sure. I just got an eARC of Heiress and I can’t wait to read it:-)

  6. I hope I get approved for An Education In Malice. Several months ago they tweeted about signing up via a google form to be able to receive an ARC. Haven’t heard anything about that yet…I can’t remember when they were going to say yes/no to those who applied. I think July? Either way, I’ll just try NG if I never hear back haha.
