Future Fiction #227 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

There were some exciting cover reveals last week, take a look:

NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Melissa Albert returns in this supernatural horror fantasy about a girl who uncovers dangerous secrets surrounding disappearances in her small town

One winter’s night, four people go missing: three high school students and a teacher, with no other link apparent among them.

One of the lost is Nora’s enigmatic friend, Becca, who vanishes after the lifelong friends have a transformative fight. As Nora tries to untangle the truth of Becca’s disappearance, she uncovers dark events in her high school’s past. Soon, she becomes haunted by a piece of local lore: a goddess folk figure of forgotten origins that played an eerie role in Nora and Becca’s own childhood games.

With each discovery Nora makes about the vanished four and her suburb’s secrets, she becomes increasingly aware her friend was hiding far more than she realized. She must dig deep to discover whether Becca is perpetrator or victim, and to unravel the mystery of the goddess, a desperate and dangerous creation born out of female rage. But there are other forces at work—and they’re willing to protect or destroy the legacy of the goddess at any cost.

The Bad Ones by Melissa Albert. Releases in February 2024 from Flatiron Books. Albert’s Our Crooked Hearts made my Top Five Books of 2022, so you can image how excited I am to read her next book! Plus, look at this glorious pink cover!

Alex Easton, retired soldier, returns in this novella-length sequel to the bestselling What Moves The Dead.

When Easton travels to Gallacia as a favor to Miss Potter, they find their home empty, the caretaker dead, and the grounds troubled by a strange, uncanny silence.

The locals whisper of a strange breath-stealing being from Gallacian folklore that has taken up residence in Easton’s home . . . and in their dreams.

What Feasts At Night (Sworn Soldier #2) by T. Kingfisher. Releases in March 2024 from Tor Nightfire. I don’t think I was the only reader who was surprised to find out that What Moves the Dead was getting a sequel! And check out this wonderfully gruesome cover:-D

Kembral Thorne is spending a few hours away from her newborn, and she’s determined to enjoy herself at this party no matter what. But when the guests start dropping dead, Kem has no choice but to get to work. She is a Hound, after all, and she can’t help picking up the scent of trouble.

She’s not the only one. Her professional and personal nemesis, notorious burglar Rika Nonesuch, is on the prowl. They quickly identify what’s causing the mayhem: a mysterious grandfather clock that sends them down an Echo every time it chimes. In each strange new layer of reality, time resets and a sinister figure appears to perform a blood-soaked ritual.

As Kem and Rika fall into increasingly macabre versions of their city, they’ll need to rely on their wits—and each other—to unravel the secret of the clock and save their home.

The Last Hour Between Worlds by Melissa Caruso. Releases in January 2024 from Orbit. I have never read anything by Caruso, but I always see other bloggers and readers raving about her books. I’m definitely jumping on this one!

  1. I’m delighted at the prospect of another Melissa Caruso book – I LOVE her writing and hope this one becomes available on Netgalley UK:)). And I’m summoning up the courage to try some of Kingfisher’s darker writing. I haven’t yet read a book of hers that I haven’t absolutely loved – so it would be a shame if I’d also enjoy her horror as well.

  2. will

You know, I think I can actually look at that Kingfisher one without my eyes bleeding—unlike the first one.

LOL Honestly I think this one is a little more gruesome, but they both go well together:-)

  3. All of these look good but it’s really a lovely surprise that What Moves the Dead is getting a sequel. Can’t wait to see what’s next for Easton and the rest 😀

  4. I’m SO excited for What Feasts at Night! I love the covers for these books. I’m also super excited for Caruso’s new books. I’ve loved everything she’s written, so I have high hopes! I think this is the first thing she’s written outside of the world of her two previous trilogies, so I’m very curious.

  5. I see a new T. Kingfisher story! Being a sequel it does appear I need get reading so I’m ready for it.
