Future Fiction #225 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

New books by two favorite authors, and one from a new-to-me author, take a look:

After striking out on her own as a teen mom, Madi Price is forced to return to her hometown of Brandywine, Virginia, with her seventeen-year-old daughter. With nothing to her name, she scrapes together a living as a palm reader at the local farmers market.

It’s there that she connects with old high school flame Henry McCabe, now a reclusive local fisherman whose infant son, Skyler, went missing five years ago. Everyone in town is sure Skyler is dead, but when Madi reads Henry’s palm, she’s haunted by strange and disturbing visions that suggest otherwise. As she follows the thread of these visions, Madi discovers a terrifying nightmare waiting at the center of the labyrinth—and it’s coming for everyone she holds dear.

Combining supernatural horror with domestic suspense into a visceral exploration of parental grief, What Kind of Mother cements Clay McLeod Chapman’s reputation as a “star” (Vulture) and “the twenty-first century’s Richard Matheson” (Richard Chizmar, Chasing the Boogeyman.)

What Kind of Mother by Clay McLeod Chapman. Releases in September 2023 from Quirk Books. I’m a big fan of the author, and every book of his I’ve read is very different from the others. This is getting lots of love from other horror writers, and I can’t wait to check it out. Plus, creepy cover, right?

Becoming the planet’s most (in)famous human has not changed Brooklyn Lamontagne one bit, but the time has come for him to choose where his allegiances really lie.

The United Nations is working to get everyone off Earth by the deadline – set by the planet’s true owners, the aliens known as the First. It’s a task made somewhat easier by a mysterious virus that rendered at least fifty percent of humanity unable to have children. Meanwhile, the USA and the USSR have set their sights on Mars, claiming half a planet each.

Brooklyn Lamontagne doesn’t remember saving the world eight years ago, but he’s been paying for it ever since. The conquered Earth governments don’t trust him, the Average Joe can’t make up their mind, but they all agree that Brooklyn should stay in space. Now, he’s just about covering his bills with junk-food runs to Venus and transporting horny honeymooners to Tycho aboard his aging spaceship, the Victory.

When a pal asks for a ride to Mars, Brooklyn lands in a solar system’s worth of espionage, backroom alliances, ancient treasures and secret plots while encountering a navigation system that just wants to be loved…

Earth Retrograde by R.W.W. Greene. Releases in October 2023 from Angry Robot. I’m also a big fan of Greene’s books. I’ve reviewed Twenty-Five to Life and Mercury Rising on the blog and loved both of them. Greene’s stories are an interesting mix of retro and futuristic sensibility, and I can’t wait to read this sequel to Mercury Rising!

The Last of Us meets Bird Box in Sunny Moraine’s Your Shadow Half Remains , a post-apocalyptic tale where eye contact causes people to spiral into a deadly, violent rage.

Riley has not seen a single human face in longer than she can reckon. No faces, no eyes. Not if you want to survive.

But when a new neighbor moves in down the road, Riley’s overwhelming need for human contact makes her throw caution to the wind. Somehow, in this world where other people can mean a gruesome, bloody death, Ellis makes her feel safe. As they grow closer, Riley’s grip on reality begins to slip and she can no longer fight her deepest desires.

All Riley wants to do is look.

Your Shadow Half Remains by Sunny Moraine. Releases in February 2024 from Tor Nightfire. So this blurb is a little vague, but the cover makes me so curious. I’m definitely keeping my eye on this one:-)

I had to look at it a couple of times before I saw all those details. Super creepy!

  1. All three of them sound intriguing and oh so original! Even if the one that is the most appealing to me is the second one, all of them sound promising! Thanks for sharing!

  2. Wow. These all sound good. What Kind Of Mother has an enticingly dark cover. So much to see. And Your Shadow Half Remains is so twisted. Has me very curious after reading the synopsis too. Earth Retrograde sounds good too. Earth is owned by aliens and we’re being evicted? That’s an intriguing new twist.

  3. I LOVE the look of Earth Retrograde – it sounds just like my sort of sci fi:). Thank you for the recommendation – I’ll check it out!

  4. YAYYY I have been SO excited for the cover of Earth Retrograde! I love it! Your Shadow Half Remains has me so intrigued, but also a little nervous because birds, but more intrigued especially with those comps! So I am in, birds or otherwise. Also very curious about What Kind of Mother but sometimes missing kids books get to me, so I will probably wait for your thoughts!
