Future Fiction #224 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Today I have a trio of October 2023 releases, take a look:

A contemporary gothic fairy tale about a small town haunted by the history it can’t quite seem to bury and the canny, clever young woman who finds herself drawn to the house that sits at the crossroads of it all.

Starling House is odd and ugly and fully of secrets, just like its heir. Opal knows better than to mess with haunted houses or brooding men, but it might be a chance to get her brother out of Eden, and it feels dangerously like something she’s never had: a home.

But she isn’t the only one interested in the house, or the horrors and wonders that lie beneath it. If Opal wants a home, she’ll have to fight for it. She’ll have to dig up her family’s dark past and let herself dream of a brighter future. She’ll have to go down, down into Underland, and claw her way back to the light.

Starling House is the sweeping, romantic new novel from New York Times bestseller and Hugo Award-winner Alix E. Harrow.

Starling House by Alix E. Harrow. Releases in October 2023 from Tor Books. I was so excited to see this cover reveal yesterday, and a full length novel from Alix E. Harrow is something to celebrate! I can hardly wait:-)

An unsettling, immersive, and wildly entertaining debut novel from an exciting new voice in horror for fans of Paul Tremblay and Stephen Graham Jones.

After publishing his debut novel, The Shattered Man, to disappointing sales and reviews, Campbell P. Marion is struggling to find inspiration for a follow-up. When Edenville College invites him to join as a writer-in-residence, he’s convinced that his bad luck has finally taken a turn. His girlfriend Quinn isn’t so sure—she grew up near Edenville and has good reasons for not wanting to move back. Cam disregards her skepticism and accepts the job, with Quinn reluctantly following along.

But there’s something wrong in Edenville. Despite the charming old ladies milling about Main Street and picturesque sunflowers dotting the sidewalks, poison lurks beneath the surface. As a series of strange and ominous events escalate among Edenville and its residents, Cam and Quinn find themselves entangled in a dark and disturbing history.

Told with equal parts horror and humor, Edenville explores the urban legends that fuel our nightmares and the ways in which ambition can overshadow our best instincts. Sam Rebelein is an exciting, sharp new voice, sure to terrify readers for years to come.

Edenville by Sam Rebelein. Releases in October 2023 from William Morrow. In my never ending search for new horror, I was excited to find this book on NetGalley. I love that this is about a writer and a town where something isn’t quite right…

For fans of Station Eleven and The Last of Us , an apocalyptic tale of a young woman fighting for life and justice in the tyrannical Phoenix City―the only place in Ireland yet to be overrun by the flesh-eating skrake

Outside the walls of Phoenix City, where the plague has overrun Ireland, one bite from the savage skrake means death or infection. Inside, Orpen and the other survivors of the plague gather in meager numbers. They are protected from disease and death, but the city is by no means a refuge.

Phoenix City is ruled with an oppressive hand, with even the best of the leadership power hungry and ruthless. Orpen and the banshees―a fierce, all-women force of fighters―keep the peace, or shatter it, depending on their orders. But when two women are publicly executed, Orpen knows she must make a choice between guaranteed survival within a cruel society or treacherous freedom beyond the walls.

A story of friendship, justice, and belonging, Silent City is a feminist, voice-driven take on leadership in dire times.

Silent City by Sarah Davis-Goff. Releases in October 2023 from Flatiron Books. I do love a good post apocalyptic tale, and I think this sounds really good. Plus there’s an all woman group of fighters, and I need to know more about that:-)

  1. I love the covers on all this unsettling collection, Tammy – but Harrow’s book is absolutely stunning! I hope they prove to be engrossing reads:).

  2. Woww you may have outdone yourself here Tammy! I need ALL of these! And I had seen the cover for Starling House BUT I love it and will gladly look at it again. But I am going to need those other two books in my life no question (I mean “for fans of Station Eleven AND The Last of Us”!? SOLD) so thanks for putting them on my radar!

I knew you had seen the Starling House cover, I think you are as obsessed with new covers as I am:-)

  3. Silent City and Starling House both look interesting! I saw the Tor announcement about the latter today. While I like Harrow’s books, I may opt to request it on NG rather than pre-order it as I have a shaky appreciation for gothic tales. The descriptions always sound super intriguing, but the ones I’ve read left me rather underwhelmed. But this is an adult book, so maybe it’ll hit differently for me! Great picks.

  4. All of these sound good but top of the list for me definitely has to be the new Alix E. Harrow book. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read so far and this one sounds like it should be great as well 😀

  5. Wow, you have some great choices this week. I feel in love with the cover of Starling House and can’t wait to read it. I’m also really intrigued by Edenville, which has a rather striking cover itself.

  6. Ooohhhh, look, another Alix E. Harrow book! And I love the title and cover. Certainly something I’ll keep my eyes open for.

  7. I was so excited to see that Starling House finally has a cover!! Not only is it stunning but I’ve been really looking forward to its release too after adoring both of the authors full length novels (I still need to read the novellas)

  8. Well, I like the sound of all of these but definitely Alix Harrow and ‘A contemporary gothic fairy tale ‘ had my attention. Great covers too.
    Lynn 😀
