Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D
Today I have a mix of genres: horror, science fiction & fantasy, something for everyone! Take a look:
Nat Cassidy is at his razor-sharp best again with his horror novel Nestlings which harnesses the creeping paranoia of Rosemary’s Baby and the urban horror of Salem’s Lot set in an exclusive New York City residential building.
Ana and Reid needed a lucky break. The horrifically complicated birth of their first child has left Ana paralyzed, bitter, and struggling: with mobility, with her relationship with Reid, with resentment for her baby. That’s about to change with the words any New Yorker would love to hear—affordable housing lottery.
They’ve won an apartment in the Deptford, one of Manhattan’s most revered buildings with beautiful vistas of Central Park and stunning architecture.
Reid dismisses disturbing events and Ana’s deep unease and paranoia as the price of living in New York—people are odd—but he can’t explain the needle-like bite marks on the baby.
Nestlings by Nat Cassidy. Releases in October 2023 from Tor Nightfire. I love the Rosemary’s Baby comparison, and I can hardly wait to read this. The blurb on the cover from Erika T. Wurth doesn’t hurt either:-)
From international bestseller Samit Basu, an exuberant new sci-fi adventure with heart that reads like a mash-up of Aladdin and Murderbot—with gloriously chaotic results
Shantiport was supposed to be a gateway to the stars. But the city is sinking, and its colonist rulers aren’t helping anyone but themselves.
Lina, a daughter of failed revolutionaries, has no desire to escape Shantiport. She loves her city and would do anything to save its people. This is, in fact, the plan for her life, made before she was even born.
Her brother, Bador, is a small monkey bot with a big attitude and bigger ambitions. He wants a chance to leave this dead-end planet and explore the universe on his own terms. But that would mean abandoning the family he loves—even if they do take him for granted.
When Shantiport’s resident tech billionaire coerces Lina into retrieving a powerful artifact rumored to be able to reshape reality, forces from before their time begin coalescing around the siblings. And when you throw in a piece of sentient, off-world tech with the ability to grant three wishes into the mix… None of the city’s powers will know what hit them.
The Jinn-Bot of Shantiport by Samit Basu. Releases in October 2023 from Tordotcom. And now for something completely different! This sounds delightful. A woman whose brother is a monkey?? I need this book now:-)
A girl discovers a surreal hotel where no one ever leaves. When the clock strikes midnight she’ll be trapped there forever unless she’s able to break free from magic that in turn breaks all her rules. Perfect for fans of Caraval and The Starless Sea!
The night is perfect and glorious and sparkling, too beautiful to be real. Like magic.
Anna may have grown up in glitzy Las Vegas, but she’s determined that no one will ever call her shallow. While her older sister Emily is the star of the family, Anna is the diligent stage manager, making sure that both their lives go perfectly to plan. But when Emily reveals a startling betrayal, Anna flees in the middle of a raging storm and takes shelter in a boutique establishment she’s never seen before: The Houdini.
Inside, Anna discovers a magic hotel . . . and a magical boy. Earnest, curious Max has lived his entire life inside the Houdini. Over the course of one surreal evening, he becomes Anna’s guide to the curious building. For the first time in her life, Anna is center stage, in a place that anticipates her every desire, with a boy who only has eyes for her.
But that’s because the Houdini has no other guests. No one ever enters the Houdini . . . and no one ever leaves. When the clock strikes midnight, Anna will be trapped in the Houdini forever. If Anna’s ever going to find out who she is on her own in the real world, she’ll first have to make an impossible escape. But will she be able to do it if it means leaving Max behind?
Midnight at the Houdini by Deliliah S. Dawson. Releases in September 2023 from Delacorte. Dawson is busy this year! I just featured another book of hers a couple of weeks ago, and I just spotted this one last week. It appears to be YA, and it’s about a magical hotel. OK, this is definitely a must read!
I would pick up Nestlings on the strength of that cover (oh, that cover!) alone…. 😀

Yes, that cover is sooo good!
Midnight at the Houdini sounds like it would be a lot of fun! Great picks!
I agree, it reminds me of something else (I can’t remember the name) but I’d love to try it.
All three of these books sound great and let’s be honest, I’d pick up Nestlings for the cover alone!
I love the cover too!
I could see myself reading The Jinn-Bott of Shantiport
Me too. It sounds a bit quirky and upbeat.
Basu’s book sounds great!

Doesn’t it? It sounds like a more upbeat SF story.
Maybe Midnight at the Houdini for me 😉
I love the sound of that one:-)
Nesting sounds alot like the plot of Rosemary’s baby! The cover is super creepy!

Doesn’t it? I’m looking forward to it:-)
The Jinn-bot of Shantiport. I like that cover and the book sounds really interesting, not a combo I’d have thought of but one I’d be curious try, see if it works.
I think that’s what drew me to it, it feels unique. Hopefully it will be:-)
Oh my god… the cover of Nestlings is absolutely terrifying. The synopsis of it sounds equally creepy and I’m here for it. I’d love to read this one!
The Jinn-Bot of Shantiport definitely is completely different from the first book. But it sounds like a really amazing story. I love that it has some Aladdin in the story.
Midnight at the Houdini sounds also amazing! I love that the synopsis says it’s perfect for fans of Caraval and I can definitely see a little bit of the comparison in it. It sounds well… magical! 😀

I have to admit I wasn’t a big fan of Caraval, but I have read books that compare themselves to it, and enjoyed them. So I’m definitely trying this one!
All of them sound very tempting! Thanks for introducing me!
I’m glad I could tempt you:-)
Jinn-Bot sounds really intriguing!

I like this idea to share newly discovered SFF reads! I haven’t heard of a single one of these!
Thanks Celeste! I hope you find something new to read:-)
Nestlings – NOPE! Cannot read. You’ll find me shaking under the bed hiding from the skull.
The JINN-BOT of Shantiport. Sounds like fun reading. I love the Murderbot series. I am marking my calendar.
Thank you for your posts. They have offered me perfect SFF reading selections.
LOl I know that cover is pretty creepy:-) Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Nicci!
The first and the last one have amazing covers but the one that really speaks to me is the second one, The Jinn bott of Shantiport!
Me too, it seems like it will be an upbeat story:-)
I’m curious about Nestlings! There’s so much good Tor Nightfire coming out.
I’ve been loving most of the Nightfire titles I’ve read:-)
Oooo… The Jinn-Bot of Shantiport actually gave me goosebumps – what a fabulous cover and what an intriguing, quirky world:))). Thank you for, as ever, having the coolest books on the blog-block and sharing them around!
Doesn’t it sound fabulous?? Hopefully we will both get to read it:-)
Both “The Jinn-Bot of Shantiport” and “Midnight at the Houdini” sound delightful.
