Future Fiction #218 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Three new cover reveals spotted last week, take a look:

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, and set in the world of A Darker Shade of Magic, V. E. Schwab opens a new door into perilous adventure and tangled schemes with The Fragile Threads of Power.

Once, there were four worlds, nestled like pages in a book, each pulsing with fantastical power, and connected by a single city: London. Until the magic grew too fast, and forced the worlds to seal the doors between them in a desperate gamble to protect their own. The few magicians who could still open the doors grew more rare as time passed and now, only three Antari are known in recent memory―Kell Maresh of Red London, Delilah Bard of Grey London, and Holland Vosijk, of White London.

But barely a glimpse of them have been seen in the last seven years―and a new Antari named Kosika has appeared in White London, taking the throne in Holland’s absence. The young queen is willing to feed her city with blood, including her own―but her growing religious fervor has the potential to drown them instead.

And back in Red London, King Rhy Maresh is threatened by a rising rebellion, one determined to correct the balance of power by razing the throne entirely.

Amidst this tapestry of old friends and new enemies, a girl with an unusual magical ability comes into possession of a device that could change the fate of all four worlds.

Her name is Tes, and she’s the only one who can bring them together―or unravel it all.

The Fragile Threads of Power (Threads of Power #1) by V.E. Schwab. Releases from Tor Books in October 2023. This was the big cover reveal last week, and I’m really excited for this new spin-off series! Tor is re-releasing new paperback editions of the Shades of Magic series using the same artist, and I really love this cover! What do you think?

A young woman’s secretive midwestern town is engulfed by a mysterious plague of tornadoes every generation–and she must escape it before it claims her.

Stephen King’s The Mist meets David Lynch’s Twin Peaks in this inventive, mind-bending horror-thriller.

In a small town tucked away in the midwestern corn fields, the adults whisper about Tornado Day. Our narrator, a high school sophomore, has never heard this phrase but she soon discovers its terrible meaning: a plague of sentient tornadoes is coming to destroy them.

The only thing that stands between the town and total annihilation is a teen boy known as the tornado killer. Drawn to this enigmatic boy, our narrator senses an unnatural connection between them. But the adults are hiding a secret about the origins of the tornadoes and the true nature of the tornado killer—and our narrator must escape before the primeval power that binds them all comes to claim her.

Audaciously conceived and steeped in existential dread, this genre-defying novel reveals the mythbound madness at the heart of American life.

Bride of the Tornado by James Kennedy. Releases in August 2023 from Quirk Books. Quirk only publishes two or three adult speculative fiction titles each year, so I’m always keeping my eye out for them. I think this sounds really good!

A chilling contemporary thriller about an unlikely friendship between a true-crime fan and a former high school classmate suspected of murdering her boyfriend, perfect for fans of Holly Jackson and Courtney Summers.

On July 28 at 6:30 p.m., Kiri Dunmore walks out of the desert wearing her boyfriend’s sweatshirt, covered in his blood. Dazed and on the verge of unconsciousness, she tells a cashier that he’s still out there and most likely dead. The disappearance of Callum Massey, a “survival guru” with hundreds of thousands of YouTube followers, rocks the nation. And Kiri is a prime suspect.

Back in Kiri’s hometown, true-crime fanatic Sam is completely hooked on the case—especially now that she recognizes the suspect as shy Katie from high school. Although they didn’t know each other well, that doesn’t stop Sam from reaching out to befriend her old classmate.

But when Kiri starts to confide in her, Sam realizes there’s more to the story than she had imagined. Can she keep Kiri’s secrets even though revealing them could put her where she’s always longed to be—at the center of the story?

Only She Came Back by Margot Harrison. Releases in November 2023 from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. I really enjoyed We Made It All Up last year, and I’m looking forward to reading Harrison’s next book!

Ooooh Only She Came Back sounds very good. AND I am obsessed with Addie LaRue so cannot wait for anything from Schwab, I love her writing.

  2. Looking forward to Only She Comes Back and Bride of the Tornado. Is it me or are there an awful lot of murders in high schools now a days 🙂 Seems like books like these are popping up everywhere now. But I am enjoying the trend so it’s all good. Makes me wonder who in my high school would have been targeted – haha!

  3. Bride of the Tornado sounds amazingly weird! I love that cover. The Schwab book is definitely eye-catching, but I suppose I’d need to read the series it’s a spin-off from before I could read it — very tempting, though!

I think that book has been on Goodreads for a long time as “Untitled”. And they finally added the title:-)

  4. Bride of the Tornado looks fabulous – I love the premise. And small-town America is always a powerful backdrop to such dark deeds:)). Thank you for sharing, Tammy!

  5. Ooh, these all sound good! Bride of the Tornado sounds so interesting. I’m really curious about V.E. Schwab’s new books, I enjoyed the ADSOM series, but since then I haven’t cared for a lot of her work, so we’ll see! It sounds super promising, though. 🙂

I’m definitely going to try the new Schwab book. I’m curious to see where she’s going to take the story.

  6. I had no idea a spin-off series to the Shades of Magic series is coming. I haven’t read those books but I’ve always wanted to give them a go. I can imagine how excited to fans are for The Fragile Threads of Power!

The synopsis of Bride of the Tornado sounds really intriguing and not something I have read before I think. The last sentence really is amazing: Audaciously conceived and steeped in existential dread, this genre-defying novel reveals the mythbound madness at the heart of American life. 😮

Only She Came Back also sounds like a really good read. I’d read any story that has a true crime fan in it. There seem to be many stories with true crime fans as characters in them now. I’d love to read it!

Since you mentioned that last sentence of Bride of the Tornado, I want to read it even more now!

  7. I haven’t read Schwab’s Shades of Magic series, but I do like the style of the cover for the spinoff. In the minority I saw a couple of less enthusastic opinions, but overall I didn’t see much reaction, I guess! But I’m a fan. I get it, though…when it was announced the Throne of Glass series would get new covers I immediately went out and purchased the full set of the old covers because I like having character art on the front.

The original and new covers are very different styles, and I feel like enough time has passed that it’s OK for a change.

  8. I’ve not read A Darker Shade of Magic. I wonder if The Fragile Threads of Power will work well without knowledge of the first series. The premise sounds interesting.

    • Tammy

I have a feeling it will work better if you’ve read the original series… But I’m just guessing;-)
