Future Fiction #214 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

I’m pretty excited about today’s cover reveals! In fact, there have been so many lately it was hard to pick only three books. Take a look:

In a world locked in eternal winter and haunted by prophecy, a young boy trains for years to become the Chosen One, only for another to rise and claim his place in the start of an unmissable epic from a rising star in fantasy.

The northlands of Crua are locked in eternal winter, but prophecy tells of the chosen child – who will rule in the name of their God, and take warmth back from the South. Cahal du Nahere was raised to be this person: the Cowl-Rai, the saviour. Taken from his parents and prepared for his destiny.

But his time never came.

When he was fifteen he ceased to matter. Another Cowl-Rai had risen, another chosen one, raised in the name of a different God. The years of vicious physical and mental training he had endured, the sacrifice, all for nothing. He became nothing.

Twenty years later, and Cahal lives a life of secrecy on the edges of Crua’s giant forests – hiding what he is, running from what he can do. But when he is forced to reveal his true nature, he sets off a sequence of events that will reveal secrets that will shake the bedrock of his entire world, and expose lies that have persisted for generations.

Gods of the Wyrdwood (Forsaken #1) by R.J. Barker. Releases in June 2023 from Orbit Books. Ever since I finished the last book in Barker’s Tide Child series, I’ve been dreaming of his next book. And it’s almost here! I cannot wait to see what he does next.

From the author of A Witch in Time comes a haunting tale of ambition, obsession, and the eternal mystery and magic of film.

1968: Actress Gemma Turner once dreamed of stardom. Unfortunately, she’s on the cusp of slipping into obscurity. When she’s offered the lead in a radical new horror film, Gemma believes her luck has finally changed. But L’Etrange Lune’s set is not what she expected. The director is eccentric, and the script doesn’t make sense.

Gemma is determined to make this work. It’s her last chance to achieve her dream—but that dream is about to derail her life. One night, between the shadows of an alleyway, Gemma disappears on set and is never seen again. Yet, Gemma is still alive. She’s been transported into the film and the script—and the monsters within it—are coming to life. She must play her role perfectly if she hopes to survive.

2015: Gemma Turner’s disappearance is one of film history’s greatest mysteries—one that’s haunted film student Christopher Kent ever since he saw his first screening of L’Etrange Lune. The screenings only happen once a decade and each time there is new, impossible footage of Gemma long after she vanished. Desperate to discover the truth, Christopher risks losing himself. He’ll have to outrun the cursed legacy of the film—or become trapped by it forever.

The Star and the Strange Moon by Constance Sayers. Releases in November 2023 from Redhook. This cover reveal was a complete surprise to me, and the book isn’t even up on Goodreads yet! I am a HUGE Constance Sayers fan, having loved A Witch in Time and The Ladies of the Secret Circus. I am over the moon that she has a new book coming out this year!

In this thrilling contemporary fantasy novel, a father must uncover the secret magical underbelly of Los Angeles to find his daughter, who has seemingly disappeared into the fictional universe of her favorite fantasy series.

When Byron Kidd’s twelve-year-old daughter vanishes, the only clue left behind is a note claiming she’s taken off to explore the Hidden World, a magical land from a series of popular novels. She is not the only child to seek out this imaginary realm in recent years, and Byron—a cynical and hard-nosed reporter—is determined to discover the whereabouts of dozens of missing kids.

Byron secures a high-profile interview with Annabelle Tobin, the eccentric author of the books, and heads off to her palatial home in the Hollywood Hills. But the truth Byron discovers is more fantastical than he ever could have dreamed.

As he uncovers locations from the books that seem to be bleeding into the real world, he must shed his doubts and dive headfirst into the mystical secrets of Los Angeles if he ever hopes to reunite with his child. Soon Byron finds himself on his own epic journey—but if he’s not careful, he could be the next one to disappear…

Told through journal entries, transcripts, emails, and excerpts from Tobin’s novels, Dreambound is a spellbinding homage to Los Angeles and an immersive and fast-paced story of how far a father will go—even delving into impossible worlds—to save his daughter.

Dreambound by Dan Frey. Releases in September 2023 from Del Rey Books. I really enjoyed Frey’s last book, The Future is Yours, and although this sounds completely different, I am super excited to dive in!

  1. I’m adding all three of these to my tbr. I thought Gods Of The Wyrd Wood would end up being the one I was most excited about considering it’s promise of prophecies & Gods but Dreambound sounds super interesting too. I’m intrigued by the mixed media approach of it and I love when fantasy worlds & reality end up blurring.

  2. What fabulous covers, Tammy! And as ever, an intriguing selection. I love the sound of The Star and the Strange Moon – Constance Sayers is an author I’ve heard lots of good things about – but never had the pleasure of reading her work. Thank you for sharing:)).

  3. Oh my goodness, Gods of the Wyrdwood sounds amazing and epic and that cover also looks fantastic. I’ll have to add this to my list!

The Star and the Strange Moon also sounds really good. Haven’t read this author yet but I’ve been wanting to read her books and this one seems to have a unique plot!

Ooooh I just read The Future is Yours not too long ago and I agree it sounds really different from Dreambound, but good different. I’m intrigued!

I love that too, when you keep looking and see new things. Like the Constance Sayers book, the edges of the cover are a film strip.
