What’s On My Plate – February 2023

Let’s get right to it: February is going to be an amazing month for new releases! (and there are even more than what’s listed below) I know I’m featuring more books than I can read, but a couple of these are novellas, so hopefully I can get to most of them. Here are the February releases I’m excited to read:

Sister, Maiden, Monster by Lucy A. Snyder. I’m excited to finally read something by Snyder, whose name I’ve seen around a lot in the horror community. This short horror novel promises to be, well, horrific!

Don’t Fear the Reaper (The Lake Witch Trilogy #2) by Stephen Graham Jones. I’ve already started this, although the beginning is a little slow and tedious. I’m hoping it picks up soon.

Gothic by Philip Fracassi. I’ve been hearing such good things about this book, and I’m eager to dive in.

World Running Down by Al Hess. This is coming up very soon on the TBR. I’ve been hearing words like “cozy” and “heartwarming” to describe it. It will be a nice change of pace!

Weyward by Emilia Hart. I actually just won a copy of this book from Goodreads (although I don’t have it yet). My first Goodreads win in many years, lol. I’m excited to read this in any format, though. It’s a multigenerational witch story, I believe.

Meru by S.B. Divya. This sounds like the start of a fun space opera series. I have this author’s books on my TBR but haven’t read any yet. Looking forward to jumping in soon!

The Writing Retreat by Julia Bartz. I’m looking forward to a snowy, winter thriller, and this will hopefully be perfect.

The Magician’s Daughter by H.G. Parry. Historical fantasy, yes! I haven’t read a good one in a while, so I’m looking forward to this.

The Crane Husband by Kelly Barnhill. I really wanted to read Barnhill’s When Women Were Dragons last year, but I’ll happily start with this novella of hers. Tordotcom has published some very good fairytale retellings, and I’m hoping this is another good one.

Arch-Conspirator by Veronica Roth. I didn’t realize this was a novella until I looked it up on Goodreads. This is a retelling of Antigone. I’m more likely to read it now that I see how short it is, lol.

Wild Massive by Scotto Moore. On the other hand, this is almost 500 pages and is getting some mixed reviews on Goodreads. I was looking forward to it, but now I’m a little hesitant…

The Foreign Exchange by Veronica G. Henry. This is the second book in a series about a Vodou priestess and takes place in New Orleans. I haven’t read the first book, but I think this can be read as a stand-alone.

Top five most viewed reviews in January (based on page views):

My nemesis continues to stay in the top spot. But I love seeing folks still checking out my review of The Book Eaters, an excellent book! And the last three were all January reviews, and it doesn’t surprise me to see them on this list.

1. A Winter’s Promise by Christelle Dabos (2018

2. The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean (2022)

3. How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix (2023)

4. Episode Thirteen by Craig DiLouie (2023)

5. The Villa by Rachel Hawkins (2023)

Are you planning to read any of these books? What is your most anticipated February book?

  1. I haven’t got any of those lined up for my February reads – though wishing I’d gone for Meru, which looks amazing and I’m wondering how I missed it! I hope you enjoy these reads, Tammy:)).

  2. So many good ones! I have copies of Arch-Conspirator and The Magician’s Daughter coming up this month as well, and I’ll be interested to see your thoughts on so many of these (especially Weyward — love that cover!)

The cover of Weyward is what drew me to it in the first place, lol. Hopefully the story will be just as magical and evocative:-)

  3. I just finished reading “The Crane Husband,” and it’s the sort of story you’d expect from this retelling. I started “Weyward,” and so far I’m enjoying the narrative style.

  4. Looks like you have a lot to look forward to. The Writing Retreat sounds so good, and I love that cover for Weyward. Hope Don’t Fear the Reaper picks up a bit for you, that’s another one I was interested in reading.

I’m definitely finishing up Don’t Fear the Reaper this weekend. It seems slower than the first book, so it’s taking longer to read.

  5. So, as someone who has read like half of these, I have some good news, and some bad news. The good news is, Sister Maiden Monster is definitely as messed up as you’d suspect. Or more, frankly. I liked World Running Down a lot! And Arch Conspirator was good though I kind of wished it would be like, a series? But apparently it makes sense for its source material? Idk. Anyway, the bad: I DNFed Wild Massive, and I haven’t DNFed a book in over a year. Maybe you’ll have better luck, but it was just so long and confusing that I had to throw in the towel. It’s kind of funny though if that helps?

Anyway I really want to read Meru too, and Weyward, and start the Lake Witch series! Hope these are good for you!

  6. I don’t plan to read them but I have hear amazing things about Weyward! I also am waiting for the sequel of Chosen Ones from Veronica Roth! No idea if it’s been published or will be published one day LOL
