Future Fiction #210 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Science fiction, thriller and fantasy, I’ve got something for everyone this week:

She’s a revolutionary. Humanity is running out of options. Habitable planets are being destroyed as quickly as they’re found, and Naira Sharp thinks she knows the reason why. The all-powerful Mercator family has been controlling the exploration of the universe for decades, and exploiting any materials they find along the way under the guise of helping humanity’s expansion. But Naira knows the truth, and she plans to bring the whole family down from the inside.

He’s the heir to the dynasty. Tarquin Mercator never wanted to run a galaxy-spanning business empire. He just wanted to study geology and read books. But Tarquin’s father has tasked him with monitoring the settlement of a new planet, and he doesn’t really have a choice in the matter.

Disguised as Tarquin’s new bodyguard, Naira plans to destroy the settlement ship before they make land. But neither of them expects to end up stranded on a dead planet  To survive and keep her secret, Naira will have to join forces with the man she’s sworn to hate. And together they will uncover a plot that’s bigger than both of them.

The Blighted Stars (The Devoured Worlds #1) by Megan E. O’Keefe. Releases in May 2023 from Orbit. So I actually never finished O’Keefe’s last series, but that won’t stop me from starting a new one. I’m so excited, this sounds like a fun SF adventure!

The Martian meets 127 Hours in this “smart, surreal, and powerfully humane” (Owen King, New York Times bestselling author) thriller about a scuba diver who’s been swallowed by an eighty-foot, sixty-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out.

Jay Gardiner has given himself a fool’s errand—to find the remains of his deceased father in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Monastery Beach. He knows it’s a long shot, but Jay feels it’s the only way for him to lift the weight of guilt he has carried since his dad’s death by suicide the previous year.

The dive begins well enough, but the sudden appearance of a giant squid puts Jay in very real jeopardy, made infinitely worse by the arrival of a sperm whale looking to feed. Suddenly, Jay is caught in the squid’s tentacles and drawn into the whale’s mouth where he is pulled into the first of its four stomachs. He quickly realizes he has only one hour before his oxygen tanks run out—one hour to defeat his demons and escape the belly of a whale.

Suspenseful and cinematic, Whalefall is an “astoundingly great” (Gillian Flynn, New York Times bestselling author) thriller about a young man who has given up on life…only to find a reason to live in the most dangerous and unlikely of places.

Whalefall by Daniel Kraus. Releases in August 2023 from MTV Books. I’ve read a couple of Kraus’s books and I’m very interested in this one. It’s sounds very exciting, I love stories where the clock is ticking. I’m not familiar with MTV Books, but they are an imprint of Simon & Schuster. Should be fun!

A boy has lived his whole life trapped within a vast library, older than empires and larger than cities.

A girl has spent hers in a tiny settlement out on the Dust where nightmares stalk and no one goes.

The world has never even noticed them. That’s about to change.

Their stories spiral around each other, across worlds and time. This is a tale of truth and lies and hearts, and the blurring of one into another. A journey on which knowledge erodes certainty, and on which, though the pen may be mightier than the sword, blood will be spilled and cities burned.

The Book That Wouldn’t Burn by Mark Lawrence. Releases in May 2023 from Ace Books. I can’t believe I’ve never read Mark Lawrence before, so it’s high time I did. This sounds like an epic library fantasy, and wow, check out that gorgeous cover!

  1. I literally just learnt about the Mark Lawrence’s book from the post I read before yours but it sounds fantastic. And I’m with you, the cover is stunning. Also I have to admit I was kind of relieved to see that you haven’t read any of his books yet either. Red Sister has been on my tbr for years but I somehow haven’t got around to picking it up yet.

  2. I’ve not read any of Mark Lawrence’s books yet either, but this one is a fantasy and about books, in a library no less, so I’d certainly give it a try. And Whalefall sounds like a movie waiting to be made. I notice it says MTV Entertainment Books, which does give me pause (and not a good pause).

I know, when I saw “MTV” I thought, wow is MTV even around anymore? Weird, but I’m very curious.

  3. Whalefall sounds like nothing I’ve ever encountered before!! Fascinating, but maybe too claustrophobic? I’ll look forward to hearing what you think once you read it. The other two books sound great as well !

  4. I literally love everything that was said on the description of The Blighted Stars. I’m gonna add it to my wishlist right away. I MUST read it!

Whalefall has a synopsis that made me go whoaaaa. I would absolutely love to read it as well.

The Book That Wouldn’t Burn also sounds like a hit for me. And the cover is so very beautiful. You make me keep adding books to my tbr!

  5. I KNEW you would include The Blighted Stars! I just had such a feeling, as I was adding it to my monthly post (and admittedly, was VERY excited to see a cover, and a great one at that) that you’d be featuring it here! So glad you included Whalefall, too, because that one is new to me but I NEEEED it. I have also enjoyed books by the author, so I am excited for this one! I haven’t read any Mark Lawrence either! But between the cover and the synopsis, this one is going on my list for SURE!
