2023 Reading Challenges

I’m linking up with Top Ten Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Check out upcoming Top Ten themes on Jana’s blog!

I’m terrible at keeping up with reading challenges, but hey, let’s give it another try in 2023! I’ve found some fun challenges on blogs I follow, and they seem pretty easy. Plus I can probably do a lot of cross-over. I also have a couple of personal challenges, and hopefully I’ll be motivated to complete them. I know this seems like a lot, but it’s January and I’m feeling optimistic:-)

1. First, here’s my 2023 Goodreads challenge:

I’ve knocked off 20 books from last year’s challenge, simply to give myself a break.

2. bookforager’s Picture Prompt Book Bingo 2023:

I was going to do this last year, but oops I forgot about it! But come on, doesn’t this look like fun? Find a book that fits each picture prompt, and you can interpret it however you want. Check out Mayri’s post here if you want to join in too!

 3. 2023 SFF Title Challenge

I saw this on Annemieke’s blog and I think it sounds like fun! Read books with these words in the title. Simple, right? Check out her blog post that explains how it works here.

4. The Year Long Scavenger Hunt

Courtesy of Birdie’s Book Nook comes this awesome scavenger-type challenge. Lots of these are SFF related prompts, so I figure it won’t be that hard! Check out Jordyn’s blog post here if you’d like to join in too!

5. Tammy’s personal backlist challenge:

Trying to catch up with past due review books, and trying to read from my personal library of books I’ve purchased is so hard, but this year I’m determined to knock a few books off those lists. Taking a few books from my Regrets post, and adding a couple of books I’ve recently purchased (based on internet hype and Best of 2022 lists), I’ve come up with five must read backlist books. Ghostwritten, Lavender House and The Hacienda are the three “regrets” I’m most excited to read. And after reading some reviews from fellow bloggers and literally hearing about and seeing Remarkably Bright Creatures and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow everywhere, I bought copies for myself. Now to actually read them! Let me know if you’ve read any of these!

So in the spirit of accountability, I’m scheduling “check in” posts at the end of each quarter to track my progress. My first check in will be early April, so let’s see how I do?

Have you made any reading goals this year? Let me know so I can check them out:-D

  1. That’s an ambitious number of challenges! I think I’m going to casually participate in Birdie’s Book Nook scavenger hunt since it looks like I can get most of the prompts with what I’m already planning to read

    • Tammy

That’s what I was thinking too. A lot of the books I plan on reading will fit lots of these prompts.

  2. Wow, this certainly does look ambitious, even after reducing the number of books. But personally I like to try to set goals that push me so I’d rather err on the side of too many goals that too few. I figure if I have too many it keeps me striving and I’m likely to achieve more than I would have if I’d had too few as I might slow down after checking them all off. It’s all about personality and understanding your own. So I applaud your making goals that suit you and I’ll be rooting for you from the sidelines.

I’m taking advantage of that beginning of the year exuberance when I feel like I can do all the things:-)

  3. Best of luck, Tammy:)). I’m not in a place where I want to put myself under any kind of pressure whatsoever, given that I’m still liable to relapses. But these do look a packet of fun – perhaps next year:)). In the meantime, the very best of luck and I look forward to seeing how well you do.

  4. The reading challenges you posted are so cool, especially the picture prompt one! I don’t think I’ve ever done any formal challenges before, but seeing so many people talking about them today is making me rethink that. I committed to BookRiot’s Read Harder challenge, but now I want to try maybe one or two more? Maybe? Anyway, great list! Thank you for sharing. I hope you are able to meet all your goals! Here is my TTT list.

  5. The Picture Prompt Bingo looks great! So does the Scavenger Hunt and Title Challenge. Good luck!
My reading time has gone down so I’m only joining a couple of challenges, most notably Mount TBR.

  6. I, too, struggle (i.e. fail) with reading challenges. I mean, very specific planned ones. The best I can do is set aside a few books that “I must get to or else!” These challenges you’ve found look super fun, but I know better. Maybe, maybe the only do-able one for me would be the SFF titles. But I feel like you can knock at least two of these out of the park – definitely you’ll ace the pics one.

I feel like a lot of the books I want to read anyway will fit these prompts. Hopefully it won’t be too hard:-)

  7. Good luck! I cut down on my Goodreads goal this year too — why add unneeded pressure? I like the SFF title challenge — looks like so much fun. Other than Goodreads, I really don’t do challenges. In the past, when I have, it’s been fun to see if anything I read checked any boxes on a given challenge, but I really didn’t like the idea of seeking out books specifically to meet challenge items. But, I wish you great success! Will look forward to seeing what books you end up reading!

My goal is to get as many of my “wish to read” books from the library and not Amazon or bookshops. I fell out of the habit of using my library routinely during the first two years of covid. I am using my Goodreads “want to read” list to search the card catalog. The goal is ebook first and physical copy second. So far three books down.

  9. I haven’t taken on any challenges this year. Last year I did a book (or story) from every blogger I follow. That was a blast. I’ll have to think about a challenge for this year.
Oo, by the way, I have a short story duology coming out Jan 28th that fits four of Birdie’s Year-Long Scavenger Hunt: cool weapon, female villain, first person, and witches (well, one witch). It’s uncouth of me to promote my book in your comments, so I won’t even say the title. But I thought I’d mention it.

Good to know, Priscilla! I will definitely check out your duology. And you never have to worry about self promotion here:-)

  10. I always love the bingo type of challenges, but just don’t want to set myself up for failure. I think it’s like you do with the Goodreads at setting it so low, lol. I am doing a TBR challenge but this time I’m not listing what books I will try to read, I am just doing them as I get to them. Here’s to meeting all our goals this year!
