Future Fiction #209- Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

I found a nice mix of genres today, take a look:

What if marriage was the law? Dare you disobey?

Britain. The near future. A right wing government believes it has the answer to society’s ills – the Sanctity of Marriage Act which actively encourages marriage as the norm, punishing those who choose to remain single.

But four couples are about to discover just how impossible relationships can be when the government is monitoring every aspect of our personal lives, monitoring every word, every minor disagreement…And it will use every tool in its arsenal to ensure everyone will love, honour and obey!

BLACK MIRROR meets thriller with a dash of Naomi Alderman’s THE POWER.

The Marriage Act by John Marrs. Releases in May 2023 from Hanover Square Press. I’m not sure where I saw this, since this isn’t a publisher I follow. But I’ve read several of Marrs’ books and enjoyed them. This sounds good!

A gothic adventure story, a classic tale with a feminist twist, a story of ambition and obsession, forbidden love and sabotage…

It is not the monster you must fear, but the monster it makes of men…’

Mary is the great-niece of Victor Frankenstein. She knows her great uncle disappeared in mysterious circumstances in the Arctic but she doesn’t know why or how…

The 1850s is a time of discovery and London is ablaze with the latest scientific theories and debates, especially when a spectacular new exhibition of dinosaur sculptures opens at the Crystal Palace. Mary, with a sharp mind and a sharper tongue, is keen to make her name in this world of science, alongside her geologist husband Henry, but without wealth and connections, their options are limited.

But when Mary discovers some old family papers that allude to the shocking truth behind her great-uncle’s past, she thinks she may have found the key to securing their future… Their quest takes them to the wilds of Scotland, to Henry’s intriguing but reclusive sister Maisie, and to a deadly chase with a rival who is out to steal their secret.

Our Hideous Progeny by C.E. McGill. Releases in May 2023 from Doubleday. This cover is everything! I love it so much. I’m intrigued by this Frankenstein retelling, and I’m definitely going to keep it on my radar.

“Happily Ever After” is a total scam, but at least this time the princess is the one controlling the grift–until her true love arrives and threatens to ruin the whole scheme. Intrigue, magic, and wit abound in this Cinderella fairytale reimagining, perfect for fans of Heather Walter and Naomi Novik.

I’m not who you think I am.

My transformation from a poor, orphaned scullery maid into the enchantingly mysterious lady who snagged the heart of the prince did not happen–as the rumors insisted–in a magical metamorphosis of pumpkins and glass slippers. On the first evening of the ball, I didn’t meekly help my “evil” stepmother and stepsisters primp and preen or watch forlornly out the window as their carriage rolled off toward the palace. I had other preparations to make.

My stepsisters and I had been trained for this–to be the cleverest in the room, to be quick with our hands and quicker with our lies. We were taught how to get everything we want in this world, everything men always kept for themselves: power, wealth, and prestige. And with a touchingly tragic past and the help of some highly illegal spells, I would become a princess, secure our fortunes, and we would all live happily ever after.

But there’s always more to the story. With my magic running out, war looming, and a handsome hostage prince–the wrong prince–distracting me from my true purpose with his magnetic charm and forbidden flirtations, I’m in danger of losing control of the delicate balance I’ve created…and that could prove fatal.

There’s so much more riding on this than a crown.

Thief Liar Lady by D.L. Soria. Releases in July 2023 from Del Rey Books. This sounds like a fun fantasy that plays around with fairy tale tropes, and what about this gorgeous cover? I can’t wait:-)

  1. The Marriage Act really does sound like a Black Mirror episode. It sounds like a crazy story and one that will have some social commentary as well.

Our Hideous Progeny is one I already have my eye on. I’d read any book that has gothic vibes. And the cover is incredible of course!

Thief Liar Lady sounds absolutely fantastic. I love the twist on the classic fairy tale genre and I love a good reimagining!

  2. Were some of Marrs’ previous books over-the-top sort of stories? The name sounds familiar. I don’t believe I’ve read any, just reviews of them.

  3. Oh I VERY need the Marrs book! Thanks for putting it on my radar, I had no idea he had a new one coming out! Though I just went to add it to my Amazon wishlist, and do you know how much it is? $32. THIRTY. TWO. ACTUAL. DOLLARS. Like this thing better be lined in gold or something, what the heck is THAT!? The UK edition (both HC and paperback) is only $20, and it comes out next week, so. That’s where I will be headed hah.

Hard agree about the Our Hideous Progeny cover, that is fabulous! The story also sounds like it has a lot of potential, so I am keeping it on my radar too. Also love the cover for Liar Lady, but it might be a bit too fantasy for me? But it still sounds good and I know a lot of people love the author’s YA books so… I won’t rule it out! Wonderful choices, as always!

  4. These titles are so intriguing!! I can’t decide for a winner here, between Our Hideous Progeny and Thief Liar Lady we are in for some intriguing books!! (and the first one is interesting too, but the other two are more my cup of tea!)
