Over-Booked [170] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

My first haul of the year is fairly small, and I feel like that’s ok. Also, I’m wondering if there are lost packages I’ll never get because of the move. It’s a little stressful thinking there are books out there that I may never see, lol. In any case, these are books received in the last month, so yes, very small haul:-)

Physical books for review:

Big thanks to Tor for the first two books: The Lies of the Ajungo (Forever Desert #1) by Moses Ose Utomi is the start to a series, and it’s already getting great reviews. It appears to be a mix of genres, including fantasy and dystopian. This is a March release that I may dive into early!

Also from Tor, I received the beautiful finished hardcover of Lost in the Moment and Found (Wayward Children #8) by Seanan McGuire. I really enjoyed this one.

Another big thanks goes to Angry Robot for a copy of Moths by Jane Hennigan. This is a debut, and I believe it was self-published in 2021. I’m always going to pick up a dystopian novel, it’s one of my favorite genres, and this sounds fantastic!

Finally, I’m thrilled to have won The Haunting of Alejandra by V. Castro from Shelf Awareness (I think). I’ve always wanted to read this author, and I’m hoping this will be a good first book of hers:-) Many thanks to Del Rey!

Digital books for review:

I have no idea where Travel by Bullet (The Dispatcher #3) came from. And I follow John Scalzi and Subterranean Press pretty closely. This book came out of nowhere, spotted on NetGalley the other day. This is the third book in the series, which I’m happy to say I’m caught up with. It’s only listed as an audio book on Goodreads, but I have the eARC. Weird!

All the Dead Lie Down by Kyrie McCauley sounds like a creepy YA horror story, with Gothic and queer elements. I’m very choosey about YA these days, but I’ll take a chance on this one:-)

And this is an unusual pick for me, but after I describe it you’ll understand. Open Throat by Henry Hoke is about a mountain lion who lives under the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles. Told from the POV of the mountain lion, I’m excited to try this. Plus the timing of its release is sad and bizarre. For years, people who lived in the Los Angeles area knew about a mountain lion called P-22, who was tracked and studied for years. Unfortunately, P-22 was recently euthanized due to illness. The author lives in New York, so I’m not even sure he was aware of P-22, but it’s quite a coincidence, I think.

Big thanks to Subterranean Press, Katherine Tegen Books and MCD:-D

Have you heard of these books?

  1. It’s funny that no matter how huge our backlog may be, we readers always like to receive more books, you’d actually think it would be a relief to receive a smaller haul but it usually just makes me feel anxious, like I might run out of things to read!
I love the sound of the lion book and can’t wait to see what you make of that one.
    Lynn 😀

  2. Nothing at all wrong with a small book haul, though I understand the concern about packages that might be lost due to the move. If they never make it home I at least hope they find their way to someone who will read and enjoy them.

  3. Nice haul! I’m excited for “Lost in the Moment and Found”; and, I received an eARC of “The Lies of the Ajungo,” which has captured my curiosity. Enjoy!
