The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: Purple cover
I’m popping in briefly (after a short break to move into my new house!) because we FINALLY got our internet up and running. I actually enjoyed the forced break, although I’m anxious to get back to my normal blogging schedule.
Today’s theme is “purple cover,” which was surprisingly hard to find. I’ve settled on The Ancestor by Danielle Trussoni, and I’m doing a head-to-head because there are only two covers on Goodreads. Take a look:
U.S. cover (William Morrow) 2020. OK, so I didn’t really enjoy this book, but I love the cover! The ominous purple skies and secluded mountain top mansion set the perfect tone for this gloomy, gothic story. This is my favorite cover.
Spanish edition, 2021. I really like this one too. But the art style has more of a fantasy feel than horror (I mean, it could almost be Hogwarts and Hedwig, lol).
Purple is my favourite colour, so how could I not like these covers? 😛 I agree with what you said about the second one, I also think it gives off more fantasy vibes than horror, but it’s still fascinating!

Glad to hear you’re making some progress, at least with the internet. 🙂 That 2nd cover drew me in just because of what it is, Neuschwanstein Castle, which I had the pleasure of touring while living in Germany. It’s become the classic vision of a castle, especially after Disney used it as inspiration for their castle. Granted, they’ve taken some creative license on the cover and edited out part of the castle, but I’m still always drawn to it. And you’re right, it does give off far more of a fantasy vibe than horror.
Oh, that’s Neuschwanstein, which I associate with great music (cf. Wagner), but not with horror, lol!

Yes, your choice definitely gives off a more ominous vibe.
Lynn 😀
Great choice, Tammy! I really like both of these covers so I don’t think I can choose between them. Can I pick both? Haha

I think I prefer the second one!
So pretty! I like the second one precisely for the magical feel!
