What’s On My Plate – December 2022

I know I’m not the only one who can’t believe it’s December already, right? This month is going to be a little different on the blog. I only have one December review book, and aside from that, I’ll be catching up on books I missed and/or reading January releases ahead of time. I’m going to focus on reading rather than posting reviews, so don’t be surprised if you only see a handful this month. Of course, I will still be doing my Future Fiction posts, and I’m already working on my Best of 2022 lists:-) Hopefully I’ll be back to normal in January! Here are the books I hope to tackle:

The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton is my only “official” December review book. I missed the author’s last book so I’m excited to start this.

Tiffany McDaniel is asking for early reviews for her upcoming book On the Savage Side, which comes out next February, so I’ll be reviewing it this month!

I’m also going to read and review Mothered by Zoje Stage (again, the publisher asked for an early review). I can’t wait, I’m a big Zoje Stage fan.

As for “catch-up” books, I am still reading Wayward by Chuck Wendig and will definitely finish it this month (all 800+ pages!).

I’ve read several glowing reviews of Lavender House by Lev A.C. Rosen, and I’d love to cross it off my list this month.

And finally, I’d love to catch up with It Rides a Pale Horse by Andy Marino.

On to a few highly anticipated January titles: Episode Thirteen by Craig DiLouie is at the top of my list! This one sounds like a lot of fun.

How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix is another book by a favorite author. Looks like I’m starting the year off with lots of horror:-)

The Villa by Rachel Hawkins has a great concept, and the blurb says it better than I can: “Inspired by Fleetwood Mac, the Manson murders, and the infamous summer Percy and Mary Shelley spent with Lord Byron at a Lake Geneva castle––the birthplace of Frankenstein––The Villa welcomes you into its deadly legacy.”

Top five most viewed reviews in November (based on page views):

I really enjoy analyzing the reviews on my site that seem to be the most popular, and I’m always surprised at those reviews that keep getting hits month after month or even year after year. So I’ve started listing the top five reviews for the previous month. Maybe I’m the only one who finds this interesting, lol, but oh well. I’m adding the year the review was posted as well, so you can see that book reviews do indeed have “legs.”

1. A Winter’s Promise by Christelle Dabos (2018)

2. The Luminaries by Susan Dennard (2022)

3. The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean (2022)

4. White Horse by Erika T. Wurth (2022)

5. A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World by C.A. Fletcher (2019)

A Winter’s Promise holds firm in the #1 spot! I’m thrilled to see A Boy and His Dog on here, I’m not sure why it’s become popular all of a sudden, but I’m not complaining, it’s fabulous.

Let me know what you’re looking forward to reading this month. Do we have any books in common?

  1. Yep, agree. How is it December. I fell like I’m living in a futuristic novel and have been shot into my own future missing everything inbetween!
Thankfully I’m also using December to catch up with some Oct/Nov books that I missed and also maybe get ahead with my January books. Lots to look forward to though.
    Lynn 😀

  2. will

I rated a book one star at the beginning of the year, and that’s all anyone can talk about now. I feel like I should just review books I loathe and my stats would be amazing lol!

I like the optimism for this month after November, which was… best not spoken of. My optimism is not that good haha. I’ve the Light Pirate and Episode Thirteen on my list for this month too! I’m looking forward to your thoughts on them!

  3. I loved Lavender House! I’m looking forward to reading Episode Thriteen too (although I’ll probably wait until January). I’m enjoying having a month with no ARCs scheduled — I’m reading random books from my shelves, and it’s such bliss. 🙂 Wishing you a good December!

  4. I have Wayward in audio and plan to read it soon but possibly not until after the new year. I have a couple other audiobooks I wanted to get through first. And I’m very curious to hear more about Episode Thirteen because I love that cover. I hope December goes well for you and your family!

  5. December is generally a light month for me too in terms of new releases on my list so I am also looking to do some catching up. Catch-up December, that’s been a thing for me for years lol!

I always plan to catch up but December always seems so busy so my plans usually fail in that respect;-)

  6. Your description of The Villa has me twitching to read it now, too. Oh my, my internal calendar still thinks Halloween just happened. Enjoy your free month of December to read.

I know what you mean about your internal calendar. I wasn’t really finished with the Halloween season!

  7. A Winter’s Promise seems to be gaining traction on BookTok lately, wonder if that’s why your review is doing so well? I am wildly surprised how many views my review of The First Binding gets – it was one of my top posts for November, 3 months after I wrote it!

My review of A Winter’s Promise has been doing well for a couple of years, I just don’t get it. It’s a horrible book! LOL

  8. It sounds like a lot of interesting titles are waiting for you in December! And time really flew by! I can’t believe we are at the end of the year!! I should get started on the “best of the years” and “reading goals and list” (that I love to write and love to fail, oops!) posts pretty soon!!
