Future Fiction #201 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books #SciFiMonth

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

It’s my first Sci-Fi Month Future Fiction post, and I have some cool books to share, take a look:

Sergeant Adrienne Valero wants to die. She can’t.

After enduring a traumatic resurrection for the ninety-sixth time, Valero is reassigned to a special forces unit and outfitted with a cutting-edge virtual intelligence aid. They could turn the tide in the war against intelligent machines dedicated to the assimilation, or destruction, of humanity.

When her VI suddenly achieves sentience, Valero is drawn into the machinations of an enigmatic major who’s hell-bent on ending the war—by any means necessary.

Rubicon by J.S. Dewes. Releases in March 2023 from Tor Books. I loved Dewes’s The Divide duology so much, and I can’t wait to read her new space opera!

Emergent Properties is the touching adventure of an intrepid A.I. reporter hot on the heels of brewing corporate warfare from Nebula Award-nominated author Aimee Ogden.

A state-of-the-art AI with a talent for asking questions and finding answers, Scorn is nevertheless a parental disappointment. Defying the expectations of zir human mothers, CEOs of the world’s most powerful corporations, Scorn has made a life of zir own as an investigative reporter, crisscrossing the globe in pursuit of the truth, no matter the danger.

In the middle of investigating a story on the moon, Scorn comes back online to discover ze has no memory of the past ten days—and no idea what story ze was even chasing. Letting it go is not an option—not if ze wants to prove zirself. Scorn must retrace zir steps in a harrowing journey to uncover an even more explosive truth than ze could have ever imagined.

Emergent Properties by Aimee Ogden. Releases in July 2023 from Tordotcom. Ogden wrote Sun Daughters, Sea Daughters, which I really enjoyed. This sounds pretty interesting, I do love a good AI story!

To save humanity, they left everything behind—except their differences.

It is the eve of Earth’s environmental collapse. A single ship carries humanity’s last hope: eighty elite graduates of a competitive program, who will give birth to a generation of children in deep space. But halfway to a distant but livable planet, a lethal bomb kills three of the crew and knocks The Phoenix off course. Asuka, the only surviving witness, is an immediate suspect.

Asuka already felt like an impostor before the explosion. She was the last picked for the mission, she struggled during training back on Earth, and she was chosen to represent Japan, a country she only partly knows as a half-Japanese girl raised in America. But estranged from her mother back home, The Phoenix is all she has left.

With the crew turning on each other, Asuka is determined to find the culprit before they all lose faith in the mission—or worse, the bomber strikes again. Now, in order to survive, she must burn brighter than the stars that surround her.

The Deep Sky by Yume Kitasei. Releases in July 2023 from Flatiron Books. Even without the stunningly lovely cover, I’m all over this story. It sort of reminds me of Do You Dream of Terra Two? in a way, and this is the author’s debut novel. I can’t wait!

  1. Yassss bring on the science fiction! J. S. Dewes is a new author to be as far as I know but Rubicon sounds like a really thrilling space opera.

Emergent Properties also sounds like a great read. I love stories that involve AI because it always does freak me out a little bit.

The cover of The Deep Sky is really interesting looking. The colors and paterns and the part of the bird. Consider me very intrigued!

  2. I like the look (cover) and sound of Rubicon. The traumatic resurrection bit reminds me of Mickey7, though that one had a very humorous aspect to it. Not sure this one does based on the description, but that’d be just fine. I’d also love a serious story.

ohhh my Rubicon! Between the cover, the blurb and that awesome tagline, I’m kind of hooked I think. I need to know more!
