Future Fiction #193 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

My picks this week are a blend of horror and thriller, and all three covers are excellent, take a look:

From the author of Tinfoil Butterfly, a blazingly original novel about sisters who return to the remote island they grew up on to face the monsters lurking in their family history.

It’s the summer of 1989 and Beatrice and Henrietta Volt are coming of age on remote Fowler Island in Lake Erie, their ancestral home and wild playground. Thicker than thieves, they plot their futures while their parents pick their marriage apart piece by piece. The girls have no idea that their parents are separating. Or that the plan is to separate them.

Ten years pass and Henrie gets a desperate call from her sister–their father has died suddenly and B.B. needs Henrie to come back to the island for the funeral. When Henrie arrives, the island seems even stranger than she remembers. But the truth is, she doesn’t remember much about the island, and nothing at all about the night she left. She just feels a vague and perplexing sense of dread and a sharp fear of the quarry pond behind the house.

Told from the perspectives of four flawed, fascinating women, The Insatiable Volt Sisters is a lush, enthralling fable about monsters real and imagined and the sometimes painful bonds of sisterhood. From the unbounded imagination of Rachel Eve Moulton, the critically acclaimed author of Tinfoil Butterfly, comes another eerie, terrifying exploration of family and legacy: Will the Volt sisters inherit the horrors of their past or surpass them?

The Insatiable Volt Sisters by Rachel Eve Moulton. Releases in April 2023 from MCD. I caught this cover reveal on Instagram last week and I knew this had to be my Future Fiction lead-off today. I just read a story about a girl who returns to her childhood home after her parents die, and this has a similar hook but sounds very different. And how gorgeous is that cover?

By day, Maeve Fly works at the happiest place in the world as every child’s favorite ice princess.

By the neon night glow of the Sunset Strip, Maeve haunts the dive bars with a drink in one hand and a book in the other, imitating her misanthropic literary heroes.

But when Gideon Green – her best friend’s brother – moves to town, he awakens something dangerous within her, and the world she knows suddenly shifts beneath her feet.

Untethered, Maeve ditches her discontented act and tries on a new persona. A bolder, bloodier one, inspired by the pages of American Psycho. Step aside Patrick Bateman, it’s Maeve’s turn with the knife.

Maeve Fly by C.J. Leede. Releases in June 2023 from Tor Nightfire. OMG this sounds amazing!! I love that it’s set in California, with references to Disneyland and the Sunset Strip. This has the potential to be a wild ride:-)

The Plot meets Please Join Us in this psychological suspense debut about a young author at an exclusive writer’s retreat that descends into a nightmare.

Alex has all but given up on her dreams of becoming a published author when she receives a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: attend an exclusive, month-long writing retreat at the estate of feminist horror writer Roza Vallo. Even the knowledge that Wren, her former best friend and current rival, is attending doesn’t dampen her excitement.

But when the attendees arrive, Roza drops a bombshell—they must all complete an entire novel from scratch during the next month, and the author of the best one will receive a life-changing seven-figure publishing deal. Determined to win this seemingly impossible contest, Alex buckles down and tries to ignore the strange happenings at the estate, including Roza’s erratic behavior, Wren’s cruel mind games, and the alleged haunting of the mansion itself. But when one of the writers vanishes during a snowstorm, Alex realizes that something very sinister is afoot. With the clock running out, she’s desperate to discover the truth and save herself.

A claustrophobic and propulsive thriller exploring the dark side of friendships and fame, The Writing Retreat is the unputdownable debut novel from a compelling new talent.

The Writing Retreat by Julia Bartz. Releases in February 2023 from Atria/Emily Bestler Books. So the premise sounds very familiar, I feel like the “And Then There Were None” plot device is popping up in books more and more. But maybe because it’s such a good device, readers are clambering for more? In any case, I love the horror writer twist to this, it should be fun!

  1. I read “It’s the summer of 1989” and I was like yup I wanna read The Insatiable Volt Sisters. But it also sounds like a great story!

The synopsis of Maeve Fly is really interesting! I’m actually loving the sound of it even though the cover really freaks me out. I also like that it’s inspired by American Psycho.

The Writing Retreat is yet another great sounding book. It actually sounds really exciting and I love that it explores the dark side of friendship and fame. Gotta keep my eye out for this one!
