Over-Booked [163] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

Sorry not sorry for the big book haul today! Book mail and NetGalley approvals comes in waves, and the last two weeks saw one of those waves hit me hard, lol. Here are my latest book acquisitions:

Physical books for review:

Orbit’s recent newsletter was loaded with books I HAVE to read, so it’s not my fault I lost control, lol. These first four are courtesy of the Orbit/Redhook gang, huge thank you! First, one of my most highly anticipated books of Fall, A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson. This is an epistolary tale of one of Dracula’s brides, and it sounds amazing.

One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig is a dark fantasy about a girl who shares her head with a monster. Doesn’t that sound good?

I’ve already read Eversion by Alastair Reynolds and loved it! The link goes to my review:-)

I fell in love with the cover of It Rides a Pale Horse by Andy Morino as soon as I saw it, and the story sounds like a fantastic horror/thriller, I can’t wait!

From the lovely Titan Books, I received a surprise copy of A Fractured Infinity by Nathan Tavares. This queer sci-fi adventure sounds really good!

There is so much good horror coming out in the next few months, including The Hollows by Daniel Church. Huge thanks to Angry Robot for this review copy!

Big thanks to Tor Teen for copies of Sarah Henning’s Kingdoms of Sand and Sky, a series that is billed as a retelling of The Princess Bride. Has anyone read this yet?

With thanks to Kaye Publicity and Flame Tree Press, I received a surprise copy of Demon Dagger by Russell James. I’m not sure I can fit it in this month, but I’d love to try it soon.

Last but not least, huge thanks to Tordotcom for this finished copy of A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland, which is probably going to be my next read.

Digital books for review:

I know, this looks like a lot. Some of them are 2023 releases so really, it’s not that bad! I’m a big fan of Clay McLeod Chapman and I can’t wait to start Ghost Eaters. I just realized this comes out next month!

W. Michael Gear’s Reckoning is the 6th book in his thrilling Donovan series, and frankly I’m shocked that I’m keeping up with this series, since I’m not usually good at that, lol. But this is a good one!

I recently featured The Ferryman by Justin Cronin on Future Fiction, and then I was offered a copy. I’m super curious to read this.

It looks like one of Ronald Malfi’s older books, The Night Parade, is being re-released by Kensington Books, and I just had to request it.

Author Villimey Mist offered me a copy of her short story anthology As the Night Devours Us. Villimey is an Icelandic author, I believe, or at least she lives in Iceland! I’m very excited to dig into this.

I was offered a copy of Weyward by Emilia Hart and didn’t hesitate at all. This is a multigenerational story about three women, and probably leans more towards literary than speculative fiction, but it sounds so good.

After my fantastic experience with Daisy Darker, I’ve been seeking out more thrillers these days. I read a couple of glowing reviews of What Lies in the Woods by Kate Alice Marshall and knew I had to request it!

It’s been years since I’ve read anything by Veronica Roth, but I’m very tempted by her upcoming adult retelling of Antigone, Arch-Conspirator.

Last but not least, I’m looking forward to this weird western from Crystal Lake Publishing, West of Hell, with stories by James A. Moore, R.B. Wood and Michael Burke.

Big thanks to Quirk Books, DAW Books, Ballantine Books, Kensington Books, Villimey Mist, St. Martin’s Press, Flatiron Books, Tor and Crystal Lake Publishing:-D

Are you planning on reading any of these books?

  1. Justin Cronin’s Passage trilogy was some of the strongest realistic worldbuilding I’ve ever read, I’m super jazzed to see he’s done something new for me to belligerently recommend! Let us know what you think!

  2. Wonderful haul! Dowry of Blood sounds very exciting. I haven’t read Henning’s series but it looks like a YA fantasy romance – which isn’t surprising, for a Princess Bride retelling.

Well I don’t, ha ha. I try but just can’t read everything. I need someone to block me from NetGalley, lol.

  3. I’m really looking forward to Dowry of Blood. And, I have to go and look at the Ronald Malfi book – I can’t get enough of his writing at the moment.
