Over-Booked [162] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!

It’s been a month since my last book haul, so that’s why this seems like a lot:-)

Physical books for review:

Huge thanks to the always generous Tor Books for these first four! I’ve already read and loved The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean, and I’m very happy to have a finished copy! My review will be up next week.

I also received a finished copy of A Half-Built Garden by Ruthanna Emrys. This is already out, but I’m hoping to read it this month.

From Tor Nightfire I received a copy of Lute by Jennifer Thorne, an October release about a cult. I am so excited to read it!

Finally, from Tordocom, this beautiful ARC of Will Do Magic For Small Change by Andrea Hairston arrived. There are some mixed reviews but I’m still curious.

I’m thrilled to have some new thrillers to read! Ha ha. First up, with thanks to Sourcebooks, Always the First to Die by R.J. Jacobs centers around a former horror movie actress when she returns to the set of one of her most famous movies. Doesn’t that sound so good??

A lovely publicist from Poisoned Pen Press contacted me about Gallows Hill by Darcy Coates, another spooky sounding murder mystery, but I was very surprised when she threw in a couple of other upcoming thrillers as well: The Guest House by Robin Morgan-Bentley and Book of Knives by Lise Haines. These are all Fall releases so I’ll definitely try to read them all. Big thanks to Poisoned Pen Press/Sourcebooks:-)

Digital books for review:

Lots of new digital goodies:-) I’m very excited for Nightwatch Over Windscar (The Weep #2) by K. Eason, the sequel to the amazing Nightwatch on the Hinterlands. I love K. Eason and I wish more readers would discover her books!

I’ve never read Mike Chen before so Vampire Weekend will be my first. I am a little scared with some of the early negative reviews on Goodreads, but still, I’m anxious to try it.

Gothic by Philip Fracassi is a horror story centered around a cursed desk! I love this concept and I’m excited to try this. It doesn’t come out until 2023 so it will be a few months before I read it.

I was just offered a copy of Bad Cree by Jessica Johns. It wasn’t even on my radar but it sounds so good. This is a horror story set in Canada and revolves around a Cree woman who is having some very disturbing dreams.

I actually bought a copy of Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree (the self published version), but Tor offered me an eARC of their upcoming rerelease, and now I have a good reason to fit it into my schedule:-)

I may be starting Eversion by Alastair Reynolds this weekend. This is a book that several fellow bloggers have loved, so of course I need to try it.

And finally, I decided on a whim to request The Villa by Rachel Hawkins, mostly because I’ve been curious about her books. As you can see I was approved, so I’ll be adding a new author to my list soon!

Big thanks to DAW Books, Mira, Cemetery Dance, Doubleday Books, Tor Books, Orbit and St. Martin’s Press:-D

Do you have any of these books on your TBR?

  1. I just picked up a copy of The Book Eaters and I can’t wait to read it. I’m also really looking forward to Mike Chen’s new book. He’s been one of my favorites. 🙂

  2. I’m looking forward to trying The Book Eaters, and I like the cover for A Half-Built Garden. A haunted desk? That’d be perfect for a horror writer.

I have been working with Tor for years, so I don’t remember how it started, lol. I would say email their publicity email to get started. Good luck!

  3. Ooh Rachel Hawkins- I didn’t know about that one. Just finished Reckless Girls recently and liked it, so… adding that one lol!

    Eversion… same here.

  4. A haunted desk – what a great idea, I think my desk was haunted!
I’ll defo be keeping an eye out for the Rachel Hawkins book.
    Lovely haul.
    Lynn 😀

  5. Bad reviews for Mike Chen? Nooooooo, I will cry! I love his stuff! Oof, I clicked the link and I am now also worried. I just adore him and will be extra sad if it is a letdown. Like, ALL these books are on my list basically bwahha. I need to make friends with whoever mails you stuff. Or become your mailman, read them all, then deliver them! I think Lute is coming up for me soon, too. I am also looking forward to getting to Half Built Garden, so I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts! Hope you enjoy these!

  6. Just finished the Book Eaters! It was definitely interesting. I also need to take a look at Gallows Hill, I love the idea of a spooky read and I probably should check out Poison Pen Press too, I don’t think I’ve read any of their books.
