Future Fiction #187 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

OK I’m very excited about this week’s picks. Three March 2023 releases that sound completely different but equally amazing, take a look:

Ten Low and her ragtag comrades take on an ultra-rich tycoon who owns entire planets in this high-octane clash of law and lawlessness across the stars, for fans of Gideon the Ninth, Anne Leckie and Becky Chambers.

Firefly meets Mad Max in a clash of law and lawlessness across the stars.

Who controls the future, controls it all…

Ten “Doc” Low is a medic with a dark past, riding the wastes of the desert moon Factus, dispensing aid to the needy and death to those who cross the laws of the mysterious Seekers. Cursed by otherworldly forces, she travels alone to keep herself safe, and to keep others safe from her…

But when she experiences a terrifying vision of conflict, and foresees the deaths of those she once called friends, she must drag herself back to the land of living to stop a war before it begins.

With a rebellion brewing, the Accord’s grip on the Outer Moons weakening, and a sinister tycoon buying up all the land in sight, Ten must find allies where she can and face the past, in order to save the future. Even if the cost might be greater than she could ever have imagined…

Hel’s Eight by Stark Holborn. Releases in March 2023 from Titan Books. I was surprised and thrilled to see Holborn’s new book announced and the cover revealed all at the same time, it was almost too much for me, lol. I absolutely loved Ten Low, and the author is calling this a “standalone follow-up,” which means you can probably dive right in without reading Ten Low first (although I’m not sure why you’d want to do that!). It’s not up on Goodreads yet so I’m linking to Amazon,

1931, New Gavleston, Mars: Fourteen-year-old Anabelle Crisp sets off through the wastelands of the Strange to find Silas Mundt’s gang who have stolen her mother’s voice, destroyed her father, and left her solely with a need for vengeance.

Since Anabelle’s mother left for Earth to care for her own ailing mother, her days in New Gavleston have been spent at school and her nights at her laconic father’s diner with Watson, the family Kitchen Engine and dishwasher as her only companion. When the Silence came, and communication and shipments from Earth to its colonies on Mars stopped, life seemed stuck in foreboding stasis until the night Silas Mundt and his gang attacked.

At once evoking the dreams of an America explored in Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles and the harder realities of frontier life in Charles Portis True Grit, Balingrud’s novel is haunting in its evocation of Anabelle’s quest for revenge amidst a spent and angry world accompanied by a domestic Engine, a drunken space pilot, and the toughest woman on Mars.

Nathan Ballingrud’s stories have been adapted into the film Wounds and the Hulu series MonsterlandThe Strange is his first novel.

The Strange by Nathan Ballingrud. Releases in March 2023 from Gallery/Saga Press. I’ve been meaning to read Ballingrud’s North American Lake Monsters for a while now, but I may just have to start with this one. This sounds amazing!

Three women. Five centuries. One secret.

‘I had nature in my heart, she said. Like she did, and her mother before her. There was something about us – the Weyward women – that bonded us more tightly with the natural world.
We can feel it, she said, the same way we feel rage, sorrow or joy.’

In 2019, Kate flees an abusive relationship in London for Crows Beck, a remote Cumbrian village. Her destination is Weyward Cottage, inherited from her great Aunt Violet, an eccentric entomologist.

As Kate struggles with the trauma of her past, she uncovers a secret about the women in her family. A secret dating back to 1619, when her ancestor Altha Weyward was put on trial for witchcraft…

Weyward is a stunning debut novel about gender and control – about the long echoes of male violence through the centuries. But more than that, it is a celebration of nature, female power and breaking free.

Weyward by Emilia Hart. Releases in March 2023 from St. Martin’s Press. First of all, can we just appreciate the beauty of this cover? I seriously wish I had a copy in my hands right now. And I love multigenerational stories, especially ones that revolve around women and witchcraft. I am excited to read this!

Wayward is just beautiful — and that premise sounds incredible, and a powerful read.

  2. Hel’s Eight caught my attention. I like the sound of it, but I’ll be relying on you to remind me all about it as we get closer to 2023. That’s just too far out for me to think about right now. 🙂

  3. I don’t even know where to begin with these, Tammy! The first two are so haunting, and the third is absolutely beautiful. Like you, I want to read it straight away. All the premises sound compelling.

I’m so excited for Hel’s Eight, I’m wondering if it’s like Ocean’s Eleven, lol.

  4. will

That first one I’m having trouble deciding which is the author’s name and which the book title! Either one would be amazing for either thing!!

  5. Okay I need all of these. Now, if possible? The Strange was already on my list but the other two will be as soon as I finish this comment, they both look FABULOUS! (Well- the empty search results from Goodreads will be for the first one, but I should also add Ten Low! I agree about the Weyward cover too- lovely! I also am a huge fan of multigenerational stories, this sounds so good! As always, thanks for putting these on my radar!
