Future Fiction #178 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

For the last Wednesday of Wyrd and Wonder, here are three new amazing sounding fantasy books, take a look:

In a world that has become treacherous and desiccated, Magdala has always had to fight to survive. At nine years old, she and her father, Xavier, are exiled from their home, fleeing through the Sonoran Desert, searching for refuge.

As violence pursues them, they join a handful of survivors on a pilgrimage to the holy city of Las Vegas, where it is said the vigilante saints reside, bright with neon power. Magdala, born with a clubfoot, is going to be healed. But when faced with the strange horrors of the desert, one by one the pilgrims fall victim to a hideous sickness—leaving Magdala to fend for herself.

After surviving for seven years on her own, Magdala is sick of waiting for her miracle. Recruiting an exiled Vegas priest named Elam at gunpoint to serve as her guide, Magdala turns her gaze to Vegas once more, and this time, nothing will stop her. The pair form a fragile alliance as they navigate the darkest and strangest reaches of the desert on a trip that takes her further from salvation even as she nears the holy city.

With ferocious imagination and poetic precision, Desert Creatures is a story of endurance at the expense of redemption. What compromise does survival require of a woman, and can she ever unlearn the instincts that have kept her alive?

Desert Creatures by Kay Chronister. Releases in November 2022 from Erewhon. I think I saw this book on Instagram, and it sounds so weird and unusual that I had to add it to my reading list. I’m not even sure what genre this is classified as, but I don’t really care!

A woman learns to expand the boundaries of her small world and let love inside it in this sparkling and unforgettable novel by Audrey Burges.

From her attic in the Arizona mountains, thirty-four-year-old Myra Malone blogs about a dollhouse mansion that captivates thousands of readers worldwide. Myra’s stories have created legions of fans who breathlessly await every blog post, trade photographs of Mansion-modeled rooms, and swap theories about the enigmatic and reclusive author. Myra herself is tethered to the Mansion by mysteries she can’t understand—rooms that appear and disappear overnight, music that plays in its corridors.

Across the country, Alex Rakes, the scion of a custom furniture business, encounters two Mansion fans trying to recreate a room. The pair show him the Minuscule Mansion, and Alex is shocked to recognize a reflection of his own life mirrored back to him in minute scale. The room is his own bedroom, and the Mansion is his family’s home, handed down from the grandmother who disappeared mysteriously when Alex was a child. Searching for answers, Alex begins corresponding with Myra. Together, the two unwind the lonely paths of their twin worlds—big and small—and trace the stories that entwine them, setting the stage for a meeting rooted in loss, but defined by love.

The Minuscule Mansion of Myra Malone by Audrey Burges. Releases in January 2023 from Berkley Books. First of all that title! I absolutely love it. This sounds like just my kind of quirky, and I can’t wait to read it!

A young woman in need of a transformation finds herself in touch with the animal inside in this gripping, incisive novel from the author of Cackle and The Return.

Rory Morris isn’t thrilled to be moving back to her hometown, even if it is temporary. There are bad memories there. But her twin sister, Scarlett, is pregnant, estranged from the baby’s father, and needs support, so Rory returns to the place she thought she’d put in her rearview. After a night out at a bar where she runs into an old almost-flame, she hits a large animal with her car. And when she gets out to investigate, she’s attacked.

Rory survives, miraculously, but life begins to look and feel different. She’s unnaturally strong, with an aversion to silver–and suddenly the moon has her in its thrall. She’s changing into someone else–something else, maybe even a monster. But does that mean she’s putting those close to her in danger? Or is embracing the wildness inside of her the key to acceptance?

This darkly comedic love story is a brilliantly layered portrait of trauma, rage, and vulnerability.

Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison. Releases in October 2022 from Berkley Books. I have yet to read a Rachel Harrison book, even after all the glowing reviews I keep seeing. Hopefully this will be my first! This sounds perfect for Halloween season:-)

  1. Just reading “the holy city of Las Vegas” made me laugh in the synopsis of Desert Creatures. But it does sound like a great read actually!

The Minuscule Mansion of Myra Malone really is a fantastic title and the story sounds just as fantastic as well.

Such Sharp Teeth is another great title! I love the sound of a darkly comedic love story!

Yes, “holy city of Las Vegas” has me very curious, I hope I get the chance to read it:-)

  2. I used to live within the Sonoran Desert in Arizona so both Desert Creatures and The Minuscule Mansion of Myra Malone caught my attention for their reference to the desert and state. I’d love to read more from that setting.

Oh cool, I didn’t know that. I love reading books that take place in settings I’ve been to:-)

  3. I read Cackle by Rachel Harrison right before last Halloween (great timing!), so I’ll look for Such Sharp Teeth too! The Miniature Mansion sounds weird but really intriguing. Another one for the TBR list!
