Future Fiction #177 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Tordotcom is on fire with cover reveals, plus an exciting new cover from Titan, take a look:

A young girl discovers an infinite variety of worlds in this standalone tale in the Hugo and Nebula Award-wining Wayward Children series from Seanan McGuire, Lost in the Moment and Found.

Welcome to the Shop Where the Lost Things Go.

If you ever lost a sock, you’ll find it here.
If you ever wondered about favorite toy from childhood… it’s probably sitting on a shelf in the back.
And the headphones that you swore that this time you’d keep safe? You guessed it….

Antoinette has lost her father. Metaphorically. He’s not in the shop, and she’ll never see him again. But when Antsy finds herself lost (literally, this time), she finds that however many doors open for her, leaving the Shop for good might not be as simple as it sounds.

And stepping through those doors exacts a price.

Lost in the Moment and Found tells us that childhood and innocence, once lost, can never be found.

Lost in the Moment and Found (Wayward Children #8) by Seanan McGuire. Releases in January 2023 from Tordotcom. This cover was just revealed, and I have to admit this might be my favorite cover of the entire series. Look carefully in the shadows! Also, does this sound a little different from the rest of the series? I’m so curious, and I can’t wait to read it.

Four brand-new horror novellas from “a modern-day Algernon Blackwood” all about books, stories, manuscripts – the written word has never had sharper teeth…

From the bestselling author of Come with Me, four standalone horror novellas set in a shared universe!

In The Skin of Her Teeth, a cursed novel drives people to their deaths.

A delivery job turns deadly in The Dark Brothers’ Last Ride.

In This Book Belongs to Olo, a lonely child has dangerous control over an usual pop-up book.

A choose-your-own adventure game spirals into an uncanny reality in The Story.

Full of creepy, page-turning suspense, these collected novellas are perfect for fans of Paul Tremblay, Stephen King and Joe Hill.

Ghostwritten by Ronald Malfi. Releases in October 2022 from Titan Books. Oh boy, two new books from Ronald Malfi in one year? I’m pretty excited about this. I’m a big fan of standalone stories set in the same universe, and I can hardly wait to get my hands on this!

Award-winning author Kelly Barnhill brings her singular talents to The Crane Husband, a raw, powerful story of love, sacrifice, and family.

“Mothers fly away like migrating birds. This is why farmers have daughters.

A fifteen-year-old teenager is the backbone of her small Midwestern family, budgeting the household finances and raising her younger brother while her mother, a talented artist, weaves beautiful tapestries. For six years, it’s been just the three of them—her mother has brought home guests at times, but none have ever stayed.

Yet when her mother brings home a six-foot tall crane with a menacing air, the girl is powerless to prevent her mom letting the intruder into her heart, and her children’s lives. Utterly enchanted and numb to his sharp edges, her mother abandons the world around her to weave the masterpiece the crane demands.

In this stunning contemporary retelling of “The Crane Wife” by the Newbery Award-winning author of The Girl Who Drank the Moon, one fiercely pragmatic teen forced to grow up faster than was fair will do whatever it takes to protect her family—and change the story.

The Crane Husband by Kelly Barnhill. Releases in February 2023 from Tordotcom. Wow, this cover!! I can’t stop looking at it. And the story sounds amazing! I wish February weren’t so far away…

  1. Great covers. I love that detail in the shadows of Lost in the Moment and Found. They perfectly fit the description of the story. I’ve been collecting that series but still need to try it. I’ve really enjoyed Malfi’s novels so far, so I look forward to these novellas. Added to my TBR. And The Crane Husband reminded me I have The Girl Who Drank the Moon sitting near the top of my TBR, and in physical form, which helps because I actually see it each time I walk by (and I love that cover, too). 🙂

I think I’m most excited about the Malfi, and it reminds me I need to go back and read his backlist:-)

  2. I read the first Wayward Children book and I wasn’t a fan. One I do wanna try it again!

Ghostwritten sounds so good… and scary! And I love that it’s four standalone novellas in the same universe since I usually enjoy those kinda books.

The Crane Husband is the one I love the synopsis the most of. It sounds absolutely amazing and the cover is really gorgeous. Wow!

  3. All these covers are wonderful – but Lost in the Moment and Found is exceptional with the sheer beauty of the detail in those shadows… The Crane Wife sounds compelling – though I’ll probably give it a miss right now. I need something a lot lighter, these days:). I hope you enjoy these reads, Tammy – they all sound spellbinding page-turners:)).

  4. I have a copy of the 7th Wayward Children from the library sitting in my house right now that I need to read still, haha, but I’m still really excited for this next one! It does sound a bit different, I agree. Ghostwritten and The Crane Husband both sound really good as well!

This Wayward Children book says “standalone” so I’m wondering if it’s completely new characters…

  5. I should have put the Wayward Children series on my TTT list of shame this week. I’ve had the first six books on my kindle forever and have yet to try one. It sounds so good though so I don’t know what I’m waiting for, lol.
