Future Fiction #169 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

This week, I have three new female authored horror books to share, take a look:

The Witch in the Well is a dark Norwegian thriller from Camilla Bruce, author of You Let Me In.

When two former friends reunite after decades apart, their grudges, flawed ambitions, and shared obsession swirl into an all-too-real echo of a terrible town legend.

Centuries ago, beautiful young Ilsbeth Clark was accused of witchcraft after several children disappeared. Her acquittal did nothing to stop her fellow townsfolk from drowning her in the well where the missing children were last seen.

When author and social media influencer Elena returns to the summer paradise of her youth to get her family’s manor house ready to sell, the last thing she expected was connecting with—and feeling inspired to write about—Ilsbeth’s infamous spirit. The very historical figure that her ex-childhood friend, Cathy, has been diligently researching and writing about for years.

What begins as a fiercely competitive sense of ownership over Ilsbeth and her story soon turns both women’s worlds into something more haunted and dangerous than they could ever imagine.

The Witch in the Well by Camilla Bruce. Releases in October 2022 from Tor Books. I’m so excited that this cover has been revealed and I can finally share it! We’re getting two new Camilla Bruce books this year, and this first one sounds amazing. I can hardly wait until October!

A local legend gone haywire.

A small-town cop.

An impossible eyewitness testimony.

Which is easier to believe—that killer mermaids exist, or that one person is worth risking everything for?

For fans of THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO and INTO THE DROWNING DEEP comes a chilling horror story steeped in urban rumor.

The Reyes Incident by Briana Morgan. Releases in April 2022, self published. I know, the blurb is short. But anything that compares itself to Into the Drowning Deep is an automatic read for me. I’ve never tried Briana’s books before, but I’ve already preordered a signed copy of this one (click here if you’re interested!), and I’m really looking forward to it!

For fans of Jennifer McMahon and Silvia Moreno-Garcia comes a haunting and atmospheric new novel from debut author Katrina Monroe.

If you can hear the call of the water,
It’s already far too late.

They say Cape Disappointment is haunted. That’s why tourists used to flock there in droves. They’d visit the rocky shoreline under the old lighthouse’s watchful eye and fish shells from the water as they pretended to spot dark shapes in the surf. Now the tourists are long gone, and when Meredith Strand and her young daughter return to Meredith’s childhood home after an acrimonious split from her wife, the Cape seems more haunted by regret than any malevolent force.

But her mother, suffering from early stages of Alzheimer’s, is convinced the ghost stories are real. Not only is there something in the water, but it’s watching them. Waiting for them. Reaching out to Meredith’s daughter the way it has to every woman in their line for generations-and if Meredith isn’t careful, all three women, bound by blood and heartbreak, will be lost one by one to the ocean’s mournful call.

Part modern gothic, part ghost story, They Drown Our Daughters explores the depths of motherhood, identity, and the lengths a woman will go to hold on to both.

They Drown Our Daughters by Katrina Monroe. Releases in July 2022 from Sourcebooks. I can’t remember where I saw this book, it’s from a publisher I don’t usually follow. But I’m so glad I did. I love the sound of a gothic ghost story that takes place near the ocean, and I’m definitely keeping my eye one this.

  1. Maybe the malevolent force in the water in They Drown Our Daughters is really the killer mermaids from The Reyes Incident!!!

  2. What a fabulous clutch of books, Tammy! I’m very tempted – but right now I don’t think I’m in the right place for horror:)). Lovely to see Camilla Bruce is being published again, though.

  3. The Witch in the Well sounds really good! Obviously perfect for spooky season, October can’t come soon enough for me!

The Reyes Incident really got my attention when I read killer mermaids in the synopsis. And the cover is super creepy too!

And how beautiful is that cover of They Drown Our Daughters?! The story sounds great as well. Gotta love modern gothics!
