Reading “Firsts” for 2022

Last year I did this post in March, and it was so much fun I decided to do it again! I originally found this meme on girlxoxo’s blog, and if this sounds like fun to you too, I hope you’ll join me:-) I’m linking each book to my review, if you’re interested. Here we go!

First book read in 2022:

According to Goodreads, I finished The Wakening by JG Faherty on Jaunuary 2nd. It’s appropriate that my first book this year was horror, since I seem to be reading a lot of that genre lately!

First review posted in 2022:

A new Wayward Children book in January is almost a given now, and 2022 is no exception. Seanan McGuire published the 7th book in the series this year, Where the Drowned Girls Go, and it was really good.

First book of 2022 by a debut author:

Debuts cans be risky, but Deep Dive by Ron Walters was such a pleasant surprise. I had so much fun with this twisty sci-fi story about parallel universes!

First book of 2022 by a “new to me” author:

I follow lots of indie press/self-published horror writers on Instagram, and I always see other reviewers and bloggers talking about Kristi DeMeester. I’m glad I’ve finally been able to read one of her books! Such a Pretty Smile was horrific and dark yet oddly empowering.

First self-published book of 2022:

I’m seeing a trend of traditionally published authors crossing over to self publishing, a lot lately. Stephanie Burgis has been doing this successfully for years, and I’m always happy to read a new book of hers. Good Neighbors was a delight!

First book of 2022 that slayed me:

I’ve had a handful of five star reads already this year, so it was hard to choose a book for this spot. But The Great Witch of Brittany by Louisa Morgan definitely slayed me in the best possible way. Emotional moments and unforgettable characters made this book a winner.

First book of 2022 that I wish I could get back the time I spent reading it:

Um yeah. What can I say about The Soul Stealer? I was in the unfortunate position of having to write a review for a blog tour, not knowing that the book would fail for me on just about every level. For those of you who read my “review,” I apologize. I did like certain aspects of the book and that’s what I chose to talk about in my review, but I honestly cannot recommend this book to anyone. I chose to delete my original review and have posted a different one on Goodreads.

What are your 2022 “firsts”? I’d love to know:-D

  1. Lovely post, Tammy:)). And such a fun meme – perhaps I will be well enough to take part next year! I’m definitely looking at getting hold of the audiobook of Deep Dive – thank you for sharing a handful of interesting and enjoyable reads, many that I’ve missed to date.

  2. It’s awesome that we’re only halfway through the 3rd month of the year and you already have some great 1sts to talks about. Well, except maybe for that last one. šŸ™‚ A book I read that would fit both 1st new to me author and 1st that slayed me would be Marlen Haushofer’s The Wall, a book with only a very slight speculative element to it.

  3. I love this. I don’t think I’ve read enough so far this year to be able to answer all the questions but might give it a try once I’ve read a few more books šŸ˜€

  4. Oooh, this is such a fun post, Tammy! I’m going to have to do this one. šŸ™‚ I’m so sorry you didn’t enjoy Soul Stealer! I was invited to that blog tour and passed, and now I’m glad I did, lol!

  5. This year I really hope I finally get around to reading one of Louisa Morgans books & aww I feel for you with the review thing. I hate having to write negative reviews as, knowing the work that goes into writing, they feel almost cruel at times. Must be even worse when you have a negative experience with a tour book.
