The Friday Face-Off: Hate to Love Trope

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: Hate to love trope

Technically my pick this week isn’t “hate to love,” it’s actually more “fake dating.” But unless you read contemporary romance, it’s a little tough to find in speculative fiction. I’m going with Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell, because there is a romance central to the story, and also because it’s one of the few romance books I’ve read with multiple covers.

U.S. Orbit edition, 2021. I love everything about this cover: the hints of space and the feeling of being on another planet, the silhouettes of the two main characters with a starry sky, the colors. This is one of my favorites:-)

UK Orbit edition, 2021. This cover has a similar vibe to the U.S. edition, but it’s quite different. I love this as well. It’s a more traditional science fiction cover but they used the same tagline, “One match can light up an empire.”

Brazilian edition (Portuguese) 2022. Another great cover! So far Maxwell is three for three. This cover has more of a mystery feel to it, with the shadowy figures entering a gate of some sort.

I really can’t choose between the U.S. and the Portuguese, those are my two favorites. Which cover do you like best? Have you read Winter’s Orbit?

  1. The Portuguese one is my favorite, but there are strong elements to both of the others, especially that semi-split design of the US cover.

  2. Yeah I had trouble with this week’s theme so I skipped it – there really isn’t much when it comes to hate to love stories in SFF. Fake dating is a great variation though, and I love all these covers!
