Future Fiction #161 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Two new 2022 horror covers revealed, as well as a big name author’s new book, take a look:

From the New York Times bestselling author of Mexican Gothic and Velvet Was the Night comes a dreamy reimagining of The Island of Doctor Moreau set against the backdrop of nineteenth-century Mexico.

Carlota Moreau: a young woman, growing up in a distant and luxuriant estate, safe from the conflict and strife of the Yucatán peninsula. The only daughter of either a genius, or a madman.

Montgomery Laughton: a melancholic overseer with a tragic past and a propensity for alcohol. An outcast who assists Dr. Moreau with his scientific experiments, which are financed by the Lizaldes, owners of magnificent haciendas and plentiful coffers.

The hybrids: the fruits of the Doctor’s labor, destined to blindly obey their creator and remain in the shadows. A motley group of part human, part animal monstrosities.

All of them living in a perfectly balanced and static world, which is jolted by the abrupt arrival of Eduardo Lizalde, the charming and careless son of Doctor Moreau’s patron, who will unwittingly begin a dangerous chain reaction.

For Moreau keeps secrets, Carlota has questions, and in the sweltering heat of the jungle, passions may ignite.

The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Releases in July 2022 from Del Rey Books. I was so excited to see this cover revealed last week, and now that I’ve reread the blurb, I’m doubly excited to read it! This sounds excellent, and I just know Silvia is going to put her own gothic, historical spin on this retelling. Can’t wait!

“When you’re given a gift, something else gets taken away.”

A precocious young girl with an unusual imagination is sent on an odyssey into the depths of depravity. After her father dies violently, young Mara is surprised to find her mother welcoming a new guest into their home, claiming that he will protect them from the world of devastation and destruction outside their door.

A grotesque and thrilling dark fantasy, We Can Never Leave This Place is a harrowing portrait of inherited grief and familial trauma.

We Can Never Leave This Place by Eric LaRocca. Releases in June 2022 from JournalStone/Trepidatio Publishing. I read my first Eric LaRocca book last year (The Strange Thing We Become and Other Dark Tales) and I was seriously impressed by Eric’s writing chops and storytelling. I’m happy to say I already have a review copy of this book and I will not be waiting until June to read it!

Legendary storyteller Stephen King goes deep into the well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher—for their world or ours.

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was ten, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. Then, when Charlie is 17, he meets a dog named Radar and his aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from it.

Charlie starts doing jobs for Mr. Bowditch and loses his heart to Radar. Then, when Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. What Bowditch knows, and has kept secret all his long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world.

Fairy Tale by Stephen King. Releases in September 2022 from Scribner. This cover reveal was a big deal over the weekend, and I couldn’t resist adding to my post this week. I’m excited to see King get back to fantasy, and I’ve heard some people compare this to The Dark Tower. I cannot wait, and I’ll most likely be preordering this:-)

  1. I haven’t read a book by Silvia Moreno-Garcia but The Daughter of Doctor Moreau sounds freaking amazing. It’s going on my wishlist for sure!

Why is the title of We Can Never Leave This Place already creepy in a way? But I am definitely intrigued. I love me some dark fantasy!

I’ve been reluctant to give Stephen King another shot (I read The Shining and didn’t like it much…) but if I would try a book of his again I would probably try this one. I really like the sound of it actually.

  2. I’ve yet to sample The Dark Tower but I’d be up for trying Fairy Tale. And can you believe I’ve never read The Island of Doctor Moreau? 🙂

  3. Ooh that new Silvia Moreno-Garcia! I had no idea that was coming out this year, so now I’m excited! Very curious and excited for Eric LaRocca’s new book as well, I was really intrigued by his book I read last year (Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke). Very curious about King’s return to fantasy!
