The Friday Face-Off: Vintage SF Written Before 1975

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: A science fiction book written before 1975

Lots to choose from for the prompt today, and I’ve decided to go with a well known SF/horror book, The Stepford Wives by Ira Levin. This was first published in 1972, and I believe the first cover is the original. I honestly can’t remember if I’ve read this or not, but I’m certainly familiar with the story! There are a ton of covers, so let’s get started:

1972 Random House edition | 2002 Perennial paperback | 1995 Spanish edition

1973 Fawcett Crest paperback | 1991 Del Rey paperback | 2004 Czech edition

1998 Bloomsbury paperback | 1992 Polish edition | 2018 French edition

1999 French edition | 2016 Sinhalese edition | 1980 Danish edition

Boy this is a weird bunch of covers, lol. And so varied. I have to say the one that keeps drawing my attention is the Sinhalese edition, but I also really like the Danish edition, which has more of a psychological horror vibe to it.

Which cover is your favorite? Have you read The Stepford Wives?

  1. I don’t know the book. I kind of like the first one, for the cute collection of faces, but it may not much the genre!
The Polish edition, the only one featuring men, right? , is puzzling!
My book has also a huge diversity of covers: https://wordsandpeace.com/2022/01/21/friday-face-off-scifi-written-in-1975-or-before/
I wonder if it’s characteristic of scifi. What do you think, as you have done Friday Face-Off for a while I think.

  2. I should read this. I’m reading the echo Wife right now which has a similar concept (don’t remember if you’ve read that one). I like the first two in that 70’s way lol but the fourth one looks so Gothic! Or maybe just 60s/ 70s as well aethetic

  3. That Sinhalese edition really gets your attention! I’ve never read this one. I’d heard of the movie but I don’t believe I’ve ever seen it.

  4. Emma @ Words and Peace pointed out this post to me and I am so thankful. Such wonderful and creepy covers of a book long on my wishlist. The Sinhalese cover is quite breath-taking.
