The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: Winter solstice
I guess I don’t read a lot of wintery books, because this prompt was tough for me. So I decided to settle on a “head to head” comparison this week, and my choice is Near the Bone by Christina Henry. The story takes place in the mountains during a snowy winter, take a look at the covers:
2021 Berkley Books U.S. edition. I really love this cover! I love the dark blue and the huge mountain and the small cabin at the bottom of it. I love the way the title fades a little at the bottom. This is definitely my favorite cover.
2021 Titan Books UK edition. I love this too! The scary but oddly vague monster hovering over the cabin tells you this is a monster story. This one’s tough to pick!
The Berkley Books US cover is definitely my favorite. It’s so dark and atmospheric looking!

I just LOVE the Titan cover: it’s so delightfully scary! 😉
I really like both covers!
Great pick, I love both the US and UK editions! I agree that the US one is just so perfectly designed and beautiful.
The first cover is gorgeous!
Thanks to you, I discovered this mem and participated today.
It was tough for me too! Here is what I did:

The first one is my favorite!
Wow, those two covers really do give the impression of very different stories. No clue which I’d pick. They’re so different but I really like aspects of both.
The UK version makes it look more scary and cooler than it was…lol. This was my least favorite book of the year. 🙁
I like both, for different reasons! I would call this a tie for me 😀
I very nearly used this book this week because it fits so well and – like you – I find it difficult to choose a favourite because I like both of them for totally different reasons.
Lynn 😀
Both of these are great. I love how creepy the second one, but I also like how deceptively serene the top one is.
