The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: Gothic
I have a feeling I won’t be the only one to use this book, but hey, I couldn’t help myself! Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia even has the word “Gothic” in the title, and I was happy to find four different covers, take a look:
U.S. edition (Del Rey) 2020 | Polish edition 2020
Croatian edition 2020 | Hungarian edition 2021
Wow, I love all of these! I’m not sure I can pick, but I’ll try. I absolutely love the Hungarian edition, I think it’s the most “gothic” of the bunch. But I’m actually choosing the Croatian cover as my favorite, although ask me another day and I might change my mind:-)
I like them all, but I like the Hungarian edition because of the snake.

I love that snake too!
I agree, they’re all great covers and each has its strengths but I like the US edition best. What made that stand out to me over the very similar Croation cover is the slightly more muted color scheme and the more neutral pose leaving me wondering what she might be feeling. And I love how both cut off the top of the head. Not seeing the eyes adds that bit of mystery and drama.
Good points, Todd. I’ve always loved the US cover:-)
I’m going to say the Croatian is my favorite too.
It’s so pretty but it also has the creepy wallpaper in the background.
I like the first one best.
I love it too, it’s so hard to choose.
Hmm… I still like the US edition the best, I think!

Hey, you can’t deny it’s a fantastic cover!
I think I like the one the best as well, although it is a nice mix this week. One of these days I’m going to get to this book too, it sounds amazing. 🙂

It’s really good:-)
I really like that last one! I always thought I liked the red with green, but that one kind of works too!
The snake makes it so ominous:-)
Wow, some gorgeous covers here but I love the Croatian cover. It immediately appealed to me – it’s stunning.
Lynn 😀
It’s gorgeous right?
Hmmm, that’s pretty interesting how the different covers put their own spin on the original! The Polish one breaks the mould…I like that style of illustration so I think it’s my favourite.
