What’s On My Plate – September 2021

How it got to be September, I have no idea. 2021 is just screaming by, at least for me. I’m happy to see the tail end of summer, though. We’ve had a hot one, and I’m looking forward to some cool Fall vibes! Typically, September is one of my biggest review TBRs, and this year it’s no different. I have a ton of books—WAY too many—but I’m throwing them all up here, even though I won’t be able to read them all. Good news, though: I’ve already read two of these! Here’s what I plan to tackle this month:

My top two most anticipated books of the month are The Bone Ship’s Wake by R.J. Barker and Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo, and I literally cannot wait to start them! I should have a copy of The Bone Ship’s Wake on the way, and I know once it’s in my hands I’ll probably drop whatever I’m reading.

I’m starting Mastermind by Andrew Mayne later this week. I’m looking forward to this spinoff series that combines two of Mayne’s series, Theo Cray and Jessica Blackwood.

Horseman is Christina Henry’s next book, a retelling of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and I’m hoping this is going to be good!

I haven’t heard much about The Liar of Red Valley by Walter Goodwater, but it sounds like it could be really good. I’ll let you know!

I received an unsolicited copy of Among Thieves by M.J. Kuhn months ago, and since then I’ve read some pretty good reviews. I’m not sure I’ll have time for it, but I would like to squeeze it in if possible.

My review of The Offset by Calder Szewczak will be up tomorrow. I enjoyed this rather grim futuristic look at a world where climate change has forced people to get creative when it comes to population control…

And yesterday I reviewed The Strange Thing We Become and Other Dark Tales by Eric LaRocca. These stories were intense but oh so good! The only reason I’m adding it here, even though I technically reviewed it in August, is that it’s a September release. I know that doesn’t make any sense, lol.

I’m happy to have quite a few horror titles to read this month. The Seven Visitations of Sydney Burgess by Andy Marino sounds good, but ugh, it’s got a few low ratings on Goodreads. If Sadie Hartmann doesn’t like it, I’m in trouble…

My copy of The Body Scout by Lincoln Michel just arrived, and I’m excited to dive in. “Perfect for fans of William Gibson.” I’m intrigued!

Dare to Know by James Kennedy is being compared to Dark Matter, but those are some big shoes to fill. I’ll let you know what I think:-)

I almost forgot I requested The Orphan Witch by Paige Crutcher! I’m always on the lookout for new witch-centric stories, so hopefully this will work for me.

I have a couple of indie horror titles to read this month, including Human Tenderloin by Craig Wallwork. This is a collection of short stories, and I’ve had good luck with horror anthologies lately, so I’m looking forward to this.

My other indie horror title is Floaters by Garrett Boatman, and sadly it’s not been getting good reviews on Goodreads. It’s pretty short, though, so I’ll most likely give it a try.

I read an excerpt of Slewfoot by Brom and liked it a lot! I’m going to tackle the entire novel this month, so stay tuned.

The Peculiarities by David Liss seems like it will be a more humorous urban fantasy. My reading has been feeling sort of heavy lately, so I’m ready for something lighter.

Finally, I received a copy of Beasts and Beauty by Soman Chainani months ago, and nearly forgot I had a copy. I believe this is middle grade, which I don’t normally read. But I’ve never read Chainani before and I’m quite curious.

August Wrap-up:

I only read nine books in August, but all of them were at least four stars, so I call that a win:-D Click on the links below if you missed any of my reviews:

Feral Creatures by Kira Jane Buxton

In the River by Jeremy Robert Johnson

Rovers by Richard Lange

The Exiled Fleet by J.S. Dewes

The Strange Thing We Become and Other Dark Tales by Eric LaRocca

Getaway by Zoje Stage

Twenty-Five to Life by R.W.W. Greene

Wildwood Whispers by Willa Reece

Tidepool by Nicole Willson

Interesting. If I have time I’ll definitely check out Floaters, although it’s not at the top of the list, so we’ll see.

  1. I am waiting for thr Fall vibes with joy too, even if here we can feel Fall in the air and I can’t barely contain my excitement! Fall coming aside, how many amazing books! I loved Mastermind and I really hope you would enjoy it too! And a lot of the others are on my TBR, so I will keep my fingers crossed and hope to read at least some of them!

  2. I’m looking forward to your thoughts on Slewfoot. It’s not one I’ve read, though I have really enjoyed another of Brom’s novels (and his artwork just rocks).

  3. Looking forward to whichever reviews you’re able to get up for these! Maybe something else will slide in and wiggle it’s tempting little pages at you in this time, who knows. 😉

I’m finding more and more that I don’t generally vibe with a lot of the average Goodreads ratings. Sometimes they’re accurate, other times I feel like the wrong readers are picking them up or I’m reading a completely different book. I do like to skim a few to see what my friends think and what the consensus is though, that’s super handy.

    Let’s go, autumn! 😀

  4. Looks like you’re gonna have a month full of intense reads . . . I’m intrigued by all the titles you have on your list, including the horror anthologies! Have a blast with as many books as possible 😀

  5. I also think September is going to be crazy busy. I have books from August too – good problems to have though?
You have some cracking looking books coming up and I look forward to seeing what you make of them.
I’m very excited for the third Bone Ships.
    Lynn 😀

  6. Sometimes I miss reading all the horror and sci-fi I used to read, especially when I see all the books that look so good in your posts! But I just haven’t been in the mood to try to fit them in between what I have been reading. Maybe someday soon. But I’ll know where to go find a good list, your blog! This year has been going by fast, and I’m now hoping my school year will as well so I can look at a new job. Here’s hoping September will be a good one for all of us!
