Future Fiction #136 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Titan Books for the win this week, with two stunning cover reveals!

Simone is one of the Glitterati, the elite living lives of luxury and leisure. Slave to the ever-changing tides – and brutal judgements – of fashion, he is immaculate. To be anything else is to be unfashionable, and no one wants to be unfashionable, or even worse, ugly…

When Simone accidentally starts a new fashion with a nosebleed at a party, another Glitterati takes the credit. Soon their rivalry threatens to raze their opulent utopia to the ground, as no one knows how to be vicious like the beautiful ones.

Enter a world of the most fantastic costumes, grand palaces in the sky, the grandest parties known to mankind and the unbreakable rules of how to eat ice cream. A fabulous dystopian fable about fashion, family and the feckless billionaire class.

Glitterati by Oliver K. Langmead. Releases in March 2022 from Titan Books. I adore everything Langmead writes, and I was surprised to spot this cover reveal on Twitter last week, since I had no idea this was even on the horizon! It sounds completely different from Langmead’s last book, and I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy:-)

A sharp-tongued disgraced-noble-turned-mercenary has to stop the world collapsing into chaos in this gripping, savagely funny epic fantasy packed with unforgettable characters, for fans of Joe Abercrombie.

Exile. Mercenary. Lover. Monster. Pennyblade.

Kyra Cal’Adra has spent the last four years on the Main, living in exile from her home, her people, her lover and her past. A highblood commrach – the ancient race of the Isle, dedicated to tradition and the perfection of the blood – she’s welcome among the humans of the Main only for the skill of her rapier, her preternatural bladework. They don’t care which of the gleaming towers she came from, nor that her grandmother is matriarch of one of Corso’s most powerful families.

But on the main, women loving women is a sin punishable by death. Kyra is haunted by the ghost of Shen, the love of her life, a lowblood servant woman whom Kyra left behind as she fled the Isle.

When a simple contract goes awry, and her fellow pennyblades betray her, Kyra is set onto a collision course with her old life, and the age-old conflict between the Main and the Isle threatens to erupt once more.

Pennyblade by J.L. Worrad. Releases in February 2022 from Titan Books. This cover!! I absolutely love it. For some reason, the story description is giving me Gideon the Ninth vibes, anyone else? I’m very curious about this one!

The first book in a dark fantasy YA duology by the author of What Big Teeth, about the power and danger of stories and the untold costs of keeping magic alive, perfect for fans of Aiden Thomas and Marie Rutkoski.

In River City, where magic used to thrive and is now fading, the witches who once ruled the city along with their powerful King have become all but obsolete. The city’s crumbling government is now controlled primarily by the new university and teaching hospital, which has grown to take over half of the city.

Moving between the decaying Old City and the ruthless New, four young queer people struggle with the daily hazards of life―work, school, dodging ruthless cops and unscrupulous scientists―not realizing that they have been selected to play in an age-old drama that revives the flow of magic through their world. When a mysterious death rocks their fragile peace, the four are brought into each other’s orbits as they uncover a deeper magical conspiracy.

Devastating, gorgeous, and utterly unique, We All Fall Down examines the complex network of pain created by power differentials, even between people who love each other―and how it is possible to be queer and turn out just fine.

We All Fall Down (The River City Duology #1) by Rose Szabo. Releases in June 2020 from Farrar, Straus & Giroux. I was captivated by this cover when I saw it, and I think the story sounds really good too. This is a YA release from the author of  What Big Teeth, a book that’s also on my TBR.

The cover for Glitterati is beautiful and the blurb brutal — it makes me think there’s going to be a lot said about our world and obsession with fashion and not being ugly.

  2. This time around what struck me most was the similarity between the first two covers, with a hand holding something that splits the face. Very similar in some ways but also very different.

I hadn’t noticed that, but you’re right. I don’t think the stories could be any different, though:-)

Agreed, Glitterati sounds very different, but it doesn’t surprise me coming from Oliver Langmead.

  3. The cover of Glitterati is so striking, definitely something that just catches your eye! Pennyblade is another striking cover and the synopsis is just EVERYTHING! We All Fall Down sounds equally amazing. I’m always up for a dark fantasy!

  4. I was already eyeing We All Fall Down for a few months now but the other two are completely new to me! Glitterati’s cover is stunning and I love the utopian theme. Pennyblade is making me really curious about how exactly is it “savagely funny”. Great picks, Tammy!

  5. Out of these Glitterati appeals to me the most because it sounds quite different. The other two of course sound very good but I’m trying to curb my desire to have ALL the books.
    Lynn 😀
