What’s On My Plate – August 2021

The next couple of months will see the release of some of my most anticipated books of 2021, and I’m almost giddy with excitement to read them! Usually I highlight one or two “most anticipated of the month” picks, but I can’t even do that this month because I am excited about so many. Here are the books I hope to tackle this month:

I know, I know, another out of control month. But it’s so hard to say “no” to any of these! The first six are probably my most anticipated books of August:

Feral Creatures by Kira Jane Buxton. No need for explanation here, but I will be reading this near the beginning of the month.

My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones. I had hoped to read this early, in July, but I just couldn’t swing it. I’ve been hearing excellent things about it, and I’m hoping it will be another SGJ favorite!

Getaway by Zoje Stage. Super excited for this one too. There’s lots of good buzz, and I can’t wait to start it.

The Exiled Fleet by J.S. Dewes is the sequel to The Last Watch, a book I adored! I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next:-)

Velvet Was the Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Silvia is so versatile, and every book she writes is different from the last. Here latest is a noir that takes place in the 70s.

Revelator by Daryl Gregory will be the second book I’ve read from the author this year, after a few dry years, lol. Here’s another gothic horror that sounds fantastic!

Tidepool by Nicole Willson. I am currently reading this and loving it! I will most likely have a review up later this week, so stay tuned.

Wildwood Whispers by Willa Reece is a tale of magic set in the Appalachians, and it sounds so good.

I guess I didn’t get enough horror last month, so I’m reading a bunch this month, including Chasing the Boogeyman by Richard Chizmar.

I will be on the blog tour for Twenty-Five to Life by R.W.W. Greene on the 26th, one of my rare blog tour appearances;-) I’m looking forward to it!

I’m hoping to get to Always Beside You by Damir Salkovic this month. This small press horror title sounds very intriguing!

A Dragonbird in the Fern by Laura Rueckert is a YA fantasy, and although it’s not my usual go-to, this one is getting some nice reviews on Goodreads.

Finally, I almost forgot I downloaded In the Watchful City by S. Qiouyi Lu, a Tor.com novella, but I’m putting in on here just in case I have time to read it.

July Recap:

July was a pretty good month! I got ten reviews up, which is really good for me. And out of the ten, four were five star reads! I tried to load up the month with horror reads for #horrorinjuly, and I did manage to read six horror titles, which I’m pretty happy about. My top book of the month has to be Come With Me, it was so good. Here’s a breakdown of all my July reviews, with links in case you missed any:

Come With Me by Ronald Malfi

The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward

The Book of Accidents by Chuck Wendig

The Past is Red by Catherynne M. Valente

A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers

The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix

The Witness for the Dead by Katherine Addison

Absolute Unit by Nick Kolakowski

For the Wolf by Hannah Whitten

Transmuted by Eve Harms

Let me know what you’re looking forward to reading this month:-D

  1. I really liked R.W.W. Greene last year, I hope you enjoy his new book!
I managed to read one book for #horrorinjuly but sadly my review won’t be posted in July, I had fun with this mini-event, I really ought to read more horror. It’s a genre I like but I often forget about all the horror books on my TBR.
    Have a great August! šŸ™‚

  2. I can’t wait to give Steven Graham Jones a read. I’m like *shiny new* to horror fiction so finding all these authors and titles is so exciting! A few through yourself, so thanks for that. šŸ˜€ Also that cover for Wildwood Whispers is STUNNING.

  3. How could I not be excited by this group? There are quite a few here that look great, though for at least one I’d need to first read what came before (and that may very well happen).

    • Tammy

She’s really good and she writes in all genres, so I feel like there’s something for everyone.

Haha thanks for reminding me I had an ARC of Twenty-five to Life! I’m embarrassed to admit I’d completely forgotten about it Otherwise, our lists are completely different! Oh well, be sure and let me know what all on yours is worth reading, kay?

  5. I’m reading Dragonbird in the Fern and I like it so far. But I wonder how plotwise it will go towards the end. I hope to read Velvet was the night and psalm this week as well!

  6. So I’m about 40 pages into Feral Creatures right now and man, ST still has it. I’m interested to see where this one is headed but I’m already laughing out loud. I also plan on reading the Chizmar book this month. So many good books and not enough time but football season is starting up which means more reading time while watching games with the husband.

  7. I’m hoping to pick up My Heart is a Chainsaw soon – fingers crossed. (Does August seem to be flying by to everyone else??)
