The Friday Face-Off: A Sideways Cover

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

So technically the prompt this week is “upside down, front to back or topsy turvy.” But I’ve already done an “upside down” post, so I decided to go with a “sideways” cover. That’s sort of topsy turvy, right? The book I’ve chosen is The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson, and the U.S. cover is the one that made me think of this prompt. Take a look:

U.S. Crown edition 2020. I loved this cover the moment I saw it! The strange mirror worlds set sideways suggest a multi-world story, and I love everything about the title and author fonts. This is probably my favorite, although there is another cover below that I love as well.

Illumicrate Exclusive edition 2020. I really love this cover, and it’s my second favorite. It’s very different from the original U.S. cover, but it has a nice mystery to it with the suggestion of different worlds with the threads.

UK Kindle edition 2020. Here is a variation on the cover above (or should I say the cover above is a variation on this one!). I’m not sure what the meaning is behind these blobs, since I haven’t read this book, but it’s pretty!

German edition 2021. I really like this cover too, I think this book got really lucky with covers, since there isn’t a bad one in the bunch. This takes the title rather literally to show “the space between worlds,” and I think it’s very effective!

Which cover do you like best?

  1. I also like the US Crown edition best. It’s interesting that the others all chose a slightly more abstract design but very similar in some ways to one another.

  2. Ha, this was the first cover I thought of, too! Great minds and all that, right? 😉 I have to say I’m not really a fan of the Illumicrate and UK covers. They don’t feel very sci-fi to me, and I think I’d feel cheated if I picked it up and realized what it was about (which is a shame, because this book was AMAZING). The US cover is definitely my favorite, but the German cover is pretty too.

I love the US Crown cover the best. Each time I see it pushes me to go on and purchase the novel instead of waiting for it to become available at the library. Problem I want the book on the shelf because of the cover. I want the ebook for reading/notation convenience.

  4. I’ve not heard of this one but it’s perfect and I love the first one – well, I also really like that German cover, but I think the first just takes the gold star this week.
