What’s On My Plate – May 2021

I don’t know why, but April flew by for me, and I really could have used another week in order to read more books, lol. But here we are in May and it’s time to start fresh! May is Wyrd & Wonder month! It’s a month long celebration of all things fantasy with a bunch of really cool bloggers, and there’s still time to join in the fun. In addition to my fantasy TBR, of course I have a bunch of other books I’d love to read too. Here’s what on my plate for May:

Books for review:

What a crazy month! And these are just my non-fantasy books for April. Lots of amazing science fiction to look forward to, starting with a book I’ve already read, The Album of Dr. Moreau by Daryl Gregory. Look for my review in a couple of weeks, but spoiler alert: I loved this. Also, don’t miss my interview with the author on release day, May 18th!

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir is a book I’ve been looking forward to for months. I’ll probably be finished with this by the time this post goes up, and as of writing this, I’m really having fun with it.

I’m also super excited for We Are Satellites by Sarah Pinsker, an author I discovered a couple of years ago. This looks like a “dangers of technology” story and sounds really good.

How to Mars by David Ebenbach looks like fun, at least the cover make it seem that way:-)

The Quiet Boy by Ben H. Winters snuck into my May review pile just recently. It’s a futuristic legal thriller, I think? Anyway, I’ve always wanted to try Winters, so this is the perfect opportunity.

I really enjoyed the last Sue Burke book I read, so I’m very excited to read her latest, Immunity Index. It’s actually very short, which will help with my very overstuffed month!

Day Zero by C. Robert Cargill is another book I’m anxious to start. I’ve already read a couple of positive reviews from fellow bloggers.

Hard Reboot by Django Wexler sounds like a fun sci-fi with mecha!

I enjoyed the last Rivers Solomon book I read, and I’ve been curious about Sorrowland. It involves a cult, and I’m here for it!

I’ve been hearing great things about The Ones We’re Meant to Find by Joan He. How’s this for a comparison? “We Were Liars meets Black Mirror, with a dash of Studio Ghibli.”

And finally, I’m going to try to get to Honeycomb by Joanne M. Harris. The reviews are sort of “meh” on Goodreads, so I’m not sure what to expect.

You might have seen my Wyrd & Wonder kick off post yesterday, but here’s a reminder of the fantasy books I’d like to read for the event. If you are interested in participating too, click here for more information.

Here’s a recap of my reviews last month, just in case you missed any.

The Last Watch (The Divide #1) by J.S. Dewes

Composite Creatures by Caroline Hardaker

Whisper Down the Lane by Clay McLeod Chapman

Well I was going to say that you might just get through all of May’s 11 ARCs, but then I got to the W&W stuff so… good luck! I’m halfway through Shadow of the Gods and so far it’s AMAZING! I hope you like it too!

Ha ha I couldn’t even get through the first 11, but oh well! Can’t wait to start Shadow of the Gods!

  2. April flew by for me, too! I didn’t read as much as I wanted, but I sure hope to get more reads done this month! Also, I’ll have a look at the beauties you shared 😀

I know, I already had so many SF books planned, but I never expected to make the whole month nothing but fantasy:-)

  3. And… I’m now rethinking my decision not to take part in Wyrd and Wonder this month. What with everything that’s going on – I’d forgotten just how welcoming and laid back the W & W team are. And that there isn’t any pressure to do anything more than turn up and be supportive… You have a number of great reads lined up – I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on them, especially Shadow of the Gods, as I also have that one.

Yes, just post one review if you want! It’s so casual and no pressure. Well, only the pressure you put on yourself;-)

  4. Curious what you think of How to Mars, it caught my attention during our Small Press Friday AMA series on Reddit, but sci-fi is not my main genre so I’m always extra cautious about picking things.
