Buffy’s Corner 4/25/21 – Looking at the Week Ahead

Welcome to Buffy’s Corner, where I take a look at what’s coming up this week on the blog! I’m linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly’s blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer:-D

Our lovely summery weather has disappeared, and it’s been really cold here in SoCal! Although next week is supposed to be hot again, go figure. Our backyard squirrel friend Squirrely (I thought long and hard about that name) is getting so bold. We give him nuts and if we aren’t fast enough, he’ll come up on the porch and wait for us. One day the back door was open and he actually came into our house looking for food! Lol. Of course I missed it, I was at work. Luckily our dogs are too slow to catch him:-)

Upcoming reviews:

It’s one of those weeks. I’m either distracted and can’t focus, or I’m just not enjoying my current read. Hey, it happens. I’ve started Stormland and it’s not quite working for me at the moment. I can’t figure out why, because it’s super atmospheric and the writing is good. But I’m having trouble liking the characters and figuring out what the plot is. I’m going to push through anyway, so hopefully I can get a review up later in the week.

Meanwhile, I did something really boneheaded. I started reading my NetGalley copy of Murder by Other Means, and as I’m reading I’m like “Boy this seems so familiar.” Well, I read the whole thing and realized I had actually read the first book in the series again, The Dispatcher. I finally figured out that the publisher had uploaded the wrong book on NetGalley, but they had later sent out an email saying that they corrected the problem. I missed that email and never downloaded the right version! LOL. So I feel like I wasted a whole day rereading a book when I just don’t have time to do that. I’ve since downloaded the correct version and I hope to read it quickly and get a review up tomorrow. In my defense, I read The Dispatcher four years ago so you can’t expect me to remember the story! Sigh.

Upcoming reads:

So this week I’m going to try to knock out a few more April releases, although my reviews will go up in May, most likely. I’ve started The Alien Stars, a collection of three novellas set in Pratt’s Axiom series. I believe these will work even though I haven’t read that series. I’ll let you know.

Bayou Whispers is a short novella, and I’m all about “short” right now, so I’ll tackle this next. And I’d love to get to Lycanthropy and Other Chronic Illnesses, because the publisher was kind enough to send not only an ARC, but a finished hardcover as well.

The usual memes…

It’s a busy week here on the blog! I don’t usually like to double up and post twice on the same day, but this week I have to. I’d like to throw together a Top Ten Tuesday this week, which is all about animals. I need to brainstorm first, though. I’m also posting an excerpt from The Sword Falls by A.J. Smith on Tuesday, so stop by for that. Wednesday is Future Fiction, and you know what that means! Friday I’m excited to share my kick off post for Wyrd & Wonder, the fantasy blogging event that happens every May. I’ll also be doing The Friday Face-Off, which is “favorite series.” And Saturday is May 1st, so come back and see What’s On My Plate for May! whew

In case you missed…

Here are my posts from last week. Two five star reviews, it was a great week for reading:-D

  1. Oh no that sounds so annoying with The Dispatcher! I’m curious to see what you think of book two, I liked the first ok but nothing too special, so have the series marked as maybe continue for now.

    • Tammy

I liked the second book but it feels very similar to the first. So not great but parts were enjoyable, I guess.

  2. Oh no, that is funny and horrible at the same time…lol. At least the story is now fresh in your mind for when you read the second book! 🙂

Have a great week and happy reading!

I think it’s an egret, although I could be wrong:-) Yes, that photo is definitely a favorite of mine:-)

  3. That’s one thing that made me laugh both times when we visited the US: your squirrels! And how they froze when we saw them! It’s like they were thinking: “I don’t move, you don’t see me, I am invisible” :-))) That made for amazing pictures!

    • Tammy

Yes, they do freeze, ha ha. They drive the dogs crazy, and I’m glad they are faster than the dogs!

    • Tammy

It’s hard to believe our weather is going to warm up, it’s just so darn cold right now!

  4. Will

Rereading the same book without realizing? Nope, I’ve never done that. Nuh-uh. Never. Of course not, don’t be silly

So do you think you’ll read the Form & Void series, or just stick with the excerpt?

    • Tammy

LOL. Umm, I would like to read Form & Void, but it’s not at the top of my list and I just don’t have time.

  5. Sorry to hear about your experiences with Stormland so far. As for rereading The Dispatcher, at least you’ll be very up on the story when reading the sequel. 🙂 And I’m sure it’ll come as no surprise, but I absolutely love the photo of the egret in flight. They really are such amazing birds to watch.

    • Tammy

Ha ha, yes I guess it ended up being fine doing an unexpected reread:-) Isn’t that egret beautiful? They really are amazing birds.

  6. Lol, I almost did the same recently, I was trying to figure out why the book seemed so familiar and then I realised that it was re released under a new name for the US market. I was about a quarter of the way through already!

Wishing you a great reading week

  7. Well, at least you got a refresher with The Dispatcher! I read it a long time ago too, and with the sequel there were moments where I wish I had reread because I forgot so many things about the way the 1 in 1000 murders thing worked.

    • Tammy

He really has a great idea for this series, I’m sort of hoping there’s another book and maybe he can take things in a more exciting direction, lol.

  8. I’m curious about Lycanthropy and Other Chronic Illnesses. Will look out for your review of that.
    LOVE that crane photo.

  9. Like you I don’t like to post more than once a day if I can help it, but there is just so much going on this month, that I probably am going to be doing double posts for while. Some days three posts! Hope you get a chance to read the Lyncanthropy one and I’ll be interested to see if you like it as much as I did. My weekly post is in the link below.
