Future Fiction #121 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

I spotted a couple of cover reveals this past week, take a look!

A town ruled by evil. A man ruled by darkness. Only one can survive.

Curtis Quinn is a Chicago mob legend with a particular set of skills and a price on his head. When the woman he loves disappears, Curtis follows her trail to the occult town of Harlow, where no one is allowed to leave, and an enigmatic, sinister overlord known only as “the Mayor” rules by an autocratic regime.

Beth Jarvis is a plucky teenager unwrapping the secrets of her hometown―Harlow―and the mysterious ceremony that awaits her on her eighteenth birthday. What Beth doesn’t know is the truth about her sister Kate, who escaped their strange town over a decade ago and has evaded the Mayor and his disciples ever since.

What Curtis doesn’t know is that Kate is the woman he’s fallen in love with, and she’s running from a threat far greater than the mobsters who want to kill him. His fate collides with Beth’s as she tries to escape Harlow and the disgusting fate that awaits her, and Curtis finds himself unraveling a mystery that leads to an impossible and terrifying conclusion―that the Mayor of Harlow is more than just a man, and the hardest target he’s ever tried to kill.

To Dust You Shall Return by Fred Venturini. Releases in June 2021 from Keylight Books. I’ve been hoping for a new Fred Venturini book for years, after loving his 2014 release The Heart Does Not Grow Back. I was thrilled to learn he (finally!) has a new book coming out soon. This sounds like my kind of book, and I cannot wait to read it:-D

In this atmospheric, terrifying novel that draws strongly from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, the author of Alice and The Girl in Red works her trademark magic, spinning an engaging and frightening new story from a classic tale.

Everyone in Sleepy Hollow knows about the Horseman, but no one really believes in him. Not even Ben Van Brunt’s grandfather, Brom Bones, who was there when it was said the Horseman chased the upstart Crane out of town. Brom says that’s just legend, the village gossips talking.

Twenty years after those storied events, the village is a quiet place. Fourteen-year-old Ben loves to play Sleepy Hollow boys, reenacting the events Brom once lived through. But then Ben and a friend stumble across the headless body of a child in the woods near the village, and the sinister discovery makes Ben question everything the adults in Sleepy Hollow have ever said. Could the Horseman be real after all? Or does something even more sinister stalk the woods?

Horseman: A Tale of Sleepy Hollow by Christina Henry. Releases in September 2021 from Berkley Books. This book snuck up on me, I didn’t even have it on my TBR until I happened to catch the cover reveal a couple of days ago. I think this sounds really good, and wow that cover!!

From africanfuturist luminary Okorafor comes a new science fiction novel of intense action and thoughtful rumination on biotechnology, destiny, and humanity in a near-future Nigeria.

Anwuli Okwudili prefers to be called AO. To her, these initials have always stood for Artificial Organism. AO has never really felt…natural, and that’s putting it lightly. Her parents spent most of the days before she was born praying for her peaceful passing because even in-utero she was wrong. But she lived. Then came the car accident years later that crippled her even further. Yet instead of viewing her strange body the way the world views it, as freakish, unnatural, even the work of the devil, AO embraces all that she is: A woman with a ton of major and necessary body augmentations. And then one day she goes to her local market and everything goes wrong.

Once on the run, she meets a Fulani herdsman named DNA and the race against time across the deserts of Northern Nigeria begins. In a world where all things are streamed, everyone is watching the reckoning of the murderess and the terrorist and the saga of the wicked woman and mad man unfold. This fast-paced, relentless journey of tribe, destiny, body, and the wonderland of technology revels in the fact that the future sometimes isn’t so predictable. Expect the unaccepted.

Noor by Nnedi Okorafor. Releases in November 2021 from DAW Books. I’m really excited to see another Okorafor book coming out! And I love this cover. I really love the sound of this.

  1. To Dust You Shall Return sounds darkly great! Also, kudos to Horseman: A Tale of Sleepy Hollow, that cover sure is original and well done

  2. I love the sound of Noor, Tammy:). The covers of the other two are truly exceptional, but they are too creepy for wussy old me… I’ve not yet read any of Nnedi Okorafor’s writing yet – but this premise has really snagged my attention. I hope you get a chance to enjoy these offerings.

  3. To Dust You Shall Return brings to mind bits and pieces of many other works and in the best possible way. It sounds like it could be a fantastic story, just added to my TBR. And I’m always open to reading more from Nnedi Okorafor

I’m very excited to read To Dust You Shall Return, and yes there are some familiar elements, which is maybe why I want to read it:-)

  4. Ooh, very intrigued by To Dust You Shall Return, and another Christina Henry already!? I didn’t even see the cover reveal for this one, where have I been? Haha, I love Sleepy Hollow so this one makes me SO excited. That’s probably going to be a pre-order one for me. 🙂

I think Noor is a different publisher from Remote Control, so it’s probably not a sequel, but yet those covers are so similiar!

  5. I KNEW you’d have Horseman on the list. I didn’t get a post up last night because Gpa blew up the short-term care facility (well, not technically but it felt the same) but I was going to feature it. It will definitely be next week’s pick. Unlike Stormi, I’m far from writing off Henry’s books. I love Sleepy Hollow so this one is very promising to me 🙂

Oh no that sounds like a story…Yeah me too, I will always read Henry’s books, even if I don’t love all of them.

h my to Dust You Shall Return certainly has my attention: that title alone would make me pick it right up, even if the cover wasn’t that striking! And also, I should mention, that blurb — hitting all my favourite notes!

  7. I didn’t know about Christina Henry’s book either! I am adding that to my wish list as well. Noor sounds really good. I hope you are having a great week, Tammy!
