I recently saw this post on girlxoxo’s website, and it seemed like a lot of fun! I’ve added a couple of “firsts” of my own, and even though this isn’t an official tag, I encourage anyone to join in. I’m linking each book to my review, if you’re interested. Here we go!
First book read in 2021:
Across the Green Grass Fields by Seanan McGuire. January always means a new Wayward Children book, and January 2021 was no exception. Even though this wasn’t my favorite of the series, I’m still eager to see what’s next.

In the Garden of Spite by Camilla Bruce. I simply adored this book! Such a creepy tale of a real life serial killer in 19th century Chicago, I thought this was an excellent way to kick off my year of reviews.
First book of 2021 by a debut author:
The Effort by Claire Holroyde is an ambitious debut about a comet that is about to hit and destroy Earth. Holroyde gives the reader lots of food for thought as she explores the human side of a possible extinction event.
First book of 2021 by a “new to me” author:
Doors of Sleep by Tim Pratt was such a great surprise! I did not know what to expect going in, but Pratt blew me away with his cool ideas and lovable characters.
First self-published book of 2021:
I don’t read many self-published books, but I aim to change that this year if I can. I did read The Gulp by Alan Baxter and absolutely loved it! It’s a series of five interconnected stories about a town in Australia where very weird and disturbing things happen.
First book of 2021 that slayed me:
The Fall of Koli by M.R. Carey is the last book I read, and it’s also a book I’m still recovering from emotionally. “Slayed” doesn’t even begin to describe my emotions!
First book of 2021 that I wish I could get back the time I spent reading it:
The Package by Sebastian Fitzek was awful, sorry to say. I won’t go into details here, but feel free to read my review if you must!
In the Garden of Spite is very high on my list of “wanted” books – and of course Koli shines, even though the ending brought some heartache with it….
I think you’d enjoy In the Garden of Spite, the history alone is pretty interesting, and the whole female serial killer – so good!
It can be interesting to look back at what we’ve read and see what counts as firsts. My first read of the year was Terry Pratchett’s Equal Rites, the first of his Witches books, and I loved it. My first reread of the year was William Gibson’s Neuromancer, and it was so long ago I first read it this was almost like a first read. I loved it as much now as I did then.
I wish I had time to reread books, and I have never read Neuromancer, can you believe it??
Love seeing all your firsts! I actually just grabbed Across the Green Grass Fields from my library last week, so I’m really excited to dig into it. I really need to pick up M.R. Carey’s series! I’ve been meaning to for forever now, and it sounds like it’s a really good one!

Across the Green Grass Fields wasn’t my first for 2021, but pretty close! Oh dear, I’m always so sad to hear about books not even worth the time spent reading them. I hope that’s the only one this year!

This is a great idea for a list post, its’ only March but it’s amazing how many interesting firsts there have been already!
I had never thought in terms of firsts, but it was actually fun:-)

I love your reading firsts
I went through a serious reading slump the beginning of the year so didn’t do much reading until May and June. Now it’s picking up, though. Hope you’re enjoying your reading year, so far!!
