Over-Booked [131] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews.

So it’s been, um, six weeks since my last book haul post! Oops. Because of that, I have quite a few new books to share today. Let’s just dive in:

Physical books for review:

Big thanks to Titan Books for this super pretty, shiny copy of Hall of Smoke by H.M. Long! I’ve already posted my review, and I loved it.

There are a lot of 2021 Tor.com books that I have my eye on, and We Shall Sing A Song Into the Deep by Andrew Kelly Stewart is one of my most anticipated. I was also sent Fugitive Telemetry by Martha Wells, which is book #6 in the Murderbot series. I need to catch up before I read this, but I’m very excited! Big thanks to Tor.com for the review copies!

Ahhh so excited to have a copy of The Fall of Koli by M.R. Carey! Koli’s series wraps up in March and I’m not sure I’ll be able to wait that long. Hugs to Orbit Books for the ARC!

I was offered a copy of another highly anticipated 2021 release, The Ladies of the Secret Circus, by the author’s publicist, and I did not hesitate at all. I loved Constance Sayers’ first book and I have high hopes for this one. Thanks to Spark Point Studio for the review copy:-D

The Last Watch by J.S. Dewes is an upcoming space opera, and it sounds so good. Plus it’s already getting rave reviews. Huge thanks to Tor for the ARC!

I was recently contacted by author Jason Parent, whose Eight Cylinders I had a lot of fun with, and he offered me a copy of The Apocalypse Strain. I was happy to accept it, and he threw in a short novella called Unseemly as well. Thank you Jason!

I won Mortal Remains by Mary Ann Fraser in a giveaway I entered on a whim, probably because the publicist for this Sterling Publishing imprint is an old Tor publicist friend of mine, and I was curious. The premise sounds really interesting, and time permitting, I will definitely try to read this. Thank you Sterling Teen!

And big thanks to Wunderkind PR for a copy of Knight’s Ransom by Jeff Wheeler. I believe this is the first book in a spin off series from one of Wheeler’s other books. I’m not sure I have time to read this, but I know Jeff Wheeler has a lot of fans.

Digital books for review:

I got lots of horrified comments about the cover of Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw on my Future Fiction post this week, lol, so hey, here it is again! Sorry?

The Minders by John Marrs. I had a bunch of fun with Marrs’ last book, The Passengers, and I can’t wait to jump into this one.

How to Mars by David Ebenbach. I featured this book last year during #SciFiMonth, so I was excited to see it pop up on NetGalley this week.

Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon. I really enjoyed Solomon’s last book, and Sorrowland has such an interesting premise and beautiful cover that I couldn’t turn it down.

Mirrorland by Carole Johnstone. This book was blurbed by Stephen King and sounds like a very twisty psychological mystery!

The Drowning Kind by Jennifer McMahon. I’ve always wanted to try McMahon’s books and this sounds like a good one to start with.

The Gulp by Alan Baxter. I just reviewed this a couple of days ago, and loved it! Horror fans take note: this is a good one!

Only the Broken Remain by Dan Coxon. I’m super picky about accepting indie/small press books these days, but this sounds like a standout collection from a writer with a lot of experience under his belt, and I couldn’t say no.

Defekt (Finna #2) by Nino Cipri. Finna was lots of fun, and I’m curious to see where this story goes next.

Dead Space by Kali Wallace. I’m looking forward to a new Kali Wallace book, after really loving Salvation Day.

The Best Thing You Can Steal by Simon R. Green. I requested this on a whim because it sounds like my kind of book, and now I’m very glad I was approved.

Huge thanks to Tor Nightfire, Berkley Books, Tachyon Publications, MCD, Scribner, Gallery/Scout Press, Alan Baxter, Dan Coxon, Tor.com, Severn House Publishers, and Tor Books!

Are you planning on reading any of these?

  1. The Last Watch looks like the sort of story I’d enjoy, so I’m hoping it turns out to be a good one. I’ll absolutely be reading Fugitive Telemetry at some point, and very likely The Fall of Koli. And your review of Hall of Smoke has me curious to try that. Finally, I can’t get over the cover for Nothing But Blackened Teeth. I hope the story does the cover justice, though that could make for some interesting reading. 🙂

  2. The Captain

I NEED MURDERBOT!! I LOVE MURDERBOT!!! While I do not have the newest arc of Murderbot (sigh!), I am actually in the middle of rereading the series cause I needed something I knew makes me happy. I am currently in book two watching ART and Murderbot get into trouble. I also want the Koli book. Excellent haul matey!
