The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: A book with “moon” in the title.
I think this is meant to be a sci-fi prompt for Vintage SciFi Month, but I’ve decided to go with a horror title, since I’m on a horror kick at the moment! Moon Dance by S.P. Somtow is a book I read years ago and I definitely need to reread at some point. It’s a werewolf story that takes place in the 1800s and is about a group of Vietnamese immigrant werewolves. Sounds good, right? Surprisingly I could only find a few covers, take a look:
U.S. edition Tor Books 1991. I just checked, and this is the edition I own. I must have met Somtow because it’s signed! LOL I don’t remember. I met a lot of authors back in the 90s. Anyway, he’s such an underrated author and I think I have quite a few of his books. Back to the cover, this is definitely my favorite of the bunch. That wolf doesn’t look very scary, though (except for the collar he’s wearing!) and I just want to pet him…
German edition 2010. Now this wolf looks scary! He doesn’t actually look much like a wolf. I really like this cover as well, and I really like the way they did the title treatment.
Kindle edition 2020. I like this cover too! I’m assuming this book is long out of print, but someone decided to publish a digital edition. Not sure what language this is in, because Goodreads isn’t telling me. This is pretty, I like the silhouette of the wolf and the cloudy sky.
Tor hardcover 1989. I’m not sure if this is U.S. or UK, but this is the original cover. And it’s my least favorite, it just looks bad when you compare it to the other covers, lol. I mean you can barely read the title of the book.
The first cover is my favorite indeed: that werewolf howling at the moon and taking up the entire space is so beautifully done that you can almost hear it! 😉

I like that first cover, as well. With the last one, not only can you barely read the title, but it looks like McOn Dance, where that first O is cropped to resemble a C. Never heard of the book but it sounds interesting.
The first cover is definitely my favorite. Mainly because I love wolves and the one of these looks really great!

Love the top two (US and German).
Think it has to be the first one!

This sounds really enticing – I’m going to have to keep my eyes open for it!
I like the first one too, but maybe it’s just because I’m partial to wolves 😀 And you’re right, the last cover is awful! Maybe in person it’s better because it looks like the title might have been done in foil.
I like the first one too- and that it’s about Vietnamese werewolves.
The first one wins hands-down. The book looks interesting too, had never heard of it before. Happy FFO!
My own pick was Wodehouse’s Full Moon (https://lexlingua.co/friday-face-off-2-moon-in-title/)
I didn’t even have to check the rest to know U.S. edition Tor Books 1991 would be my favorite, that wolf looks cute
I kind of like that one with the wolf on the cover. It reminds me of that three wolf tee shirt LOL. (I have spent too much time on the internet, clearly hahaha.)
I like the U.S. edition Tor Books 1991, it somehow just seems much more natural hahaha

I just love the first cover, the wolf looks almost mournful and I want to hug it. But, wolf.
