What’s On My Plate – January 2021

Happy New Year! Even better, HAPPY 2021 you guys 2020 IS FINALLY OVER!! Not that I expect everything to change just like that, but I think most people will have a better mindset now that it’s a new year, we have a new president coming into office, and with the COVID vaccines being rolled out all over the world, I think we’ll see the end of COVID this year, or at least the suppression of it, enough to get back to our normal lives. At least that’s what I’m hoping for. It’s hard to believe that a year ago today, COVID-19 wasn’t even a word in our vocabulary, and now it’s affecting our lives on a daily basis. Anyway, let’s move on and hope for a fantastic year!

January Review Books:

I’ve already read a few of these books, yay me for making an effort to get a jump on my January pile!

In the Garden of Spite by Camilla Bruce was really good. It’s a historical thriller about real-life serial killer Belle Gunness, and my review will be up next Monday.

The Effort by Claire Holroyde. I’ve finished this as well, and I really enjoyed this slow burn, character-driven story about a possible extinction event, a “dark comet” that is hurtling towards Earth, and what’s being done to stop it. Look for a review next week!

Across the Green Grass Fields (Wayward Children #6) by Seanan McGuire. You can always count on a new Wayward Children book in January, and McGuire doesn’t disappoint us this year!

Remote Control by Nnedi Okorafor. I’m so excited to dive into this novella. I’ve read some really good reviews and I’m a big Okorafor fan:-D

The Mask of Mirrors by M.A. Carrick. I’m thrilled to have a review copy of this book, co-authored by Marie Brennan and Alyc Helms. I’ve seen a couple of 5 star reviews already, and I’m anxious to start reading!

The Forever Sea by Joshua Phillip Johnson. This is a debut novel and also the beginning of a series. I’ve been curious about this book ever since the cover was revealed:-D

Doors of Sleep by Tim Pratt. Pratt has several books out already but I’ve never read him, for some reason. I’m looking forward to this story about a man who wakes up in a different reality every time he falls asleep. That idea has lots of potential, so I can’t wait to see how he pulls it off!

The Gulp by Alan Baxter. Alan is an Aussie horror writer who approached me about reading his book of short stories. I actually told him I probably wouldn’t be able to fit it in this month, because I already had a full plate. But I’m actually quite excited to read it and I may just try to squeeze it in anyway!

The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry by C.M. Waggoner. I had heard a lot of good things about Unnatural Magic, the author’s last book, but just couldn’t fit it in last year. The publisher’s description of “charming historical fantasy” has me hooked.

Threader Origins by Gerald Brandt. I’ve had a digital review copy of this since September, and I almost forgot it was coming out this month! I’m looking forward to this first in a series alternate reality story that deals with Quantum physics. Sounds like fun!

Hall of Smoke by H.M. Long. This wasn’t on my radar until just recently, when I was offered a copy for review. I think it sounds fantastic!

Here are the books I read and reviewed in December (click on the titles if you missed my review!):

Betty by Tiffany McDaniel

The Ghost Dance Judgement by R.S. Belcher

Escape Pod edited by Mur Lafferty & S.B. Divya

Secret Santa by Andrew Shaffer

This is Not the Jess Show by Anna Carey

We Hear Voices by Evie Green

Let me know which books you’re excited to read this month:-D

Fingers crossed that 2021 is better than the last year – it’s difficult to imagine it being worse but I wouldn’t like to tempt fate so fingers crossed.
