The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: A cover with a lake.
The first book that popped into my head turned out to be a good choice! Not only is the word “lake” in the title, but all three covers I found have lakes on them. Lake Silence by Anne Bishop is the first book in her spin-off series World of the Others, and I adore this series! The third book is coming out in 2021 and I can’t wait. Take a look at the covers:
U.S. cover Ace Books 2018. I just love this cover, and it’s the clear winner for me (although there is one other I love too, see below). The story involves otherworldly creatures called the Others who control the lake in the small town of Sproing, so the lake setting is very important in this story. This cover gives an ominous vibe, with the MC Vicki half-submerged in the mysterious lake. It’s actually perfect for the story.
French edition 2018. This is my second favorite cover! I don’t usually like “looming head” covers, but this one doesn’t bother me. I think it’s very well done. You see the lake shrouded in mist and the nearby forest, and the expression on Vicki’s face clues you into the humor and cozy feel of the story.
Polish cover 2019. We do have an ominous looking lake on this cover, but I’m not fond of the artwork depicting Vicki. It’s way too “typical urban fantasy” for my taste, plus I don’t see Vicki wearing that much makeup, lol (although it’s possible this isn’t Vicki on the cover).
The first cover looks just perfect: that face half hidden by the water, and the look in the woman’s eyes convey the feeling of mystery very clearly 🙂

Yes, they did such a good job with the US cover!
I agree with you! I like the US cover the best! Then probably French. Not a fan of the Polish one at all.
Agreed, it’s just weird.
The first one is my favorite too. I just really love the whole vibe. I agree about the makeup on the third cover. I actually found that very distracting, lol..
It’s so out of sync with the story, lol.
I like your pick this week!
Thanks Kristi!
Gotta go with the first cover! I really love the blue colors on it.

I ALWAYS gravitate towards blue covers:-)
Perfect! I love the original cover for this, I have to say. Also a reminder that I need to hop on this series soon. 🙂
It’s so good, Lisa!
I prefer the first one, the US cover, without a doubt. I like how she’s partially submerged in the water, seems to fit the title, her mouth covered by the water.
I agree, it’s a bit ominous too:-)
Wow, there are more covers for this book now than the last time I checked! I really like the one in the middle, but I think the other two covers match the story’s tone a bit more.
I feel like that’s been happening a lot, covers are popping up suddenly. I guess that’s why we have to keep checking, lol.
I’ve always liked that first cover!

Me too, it’s so mysterious:-)
Well honestly the Polish cover with these golden eyes is my favorite Tammy!
It’s definitely striking, that’s for sure!
I love the first cover – the others don’t come close. I’ve read the first two books in the original series and thoroughly enjoyed them, so it’s good to know there is a spinoff series, too:)).
I like that first one too, esp the ominous vibe! But I like the color pop in the second.
I love this choice and the first cover really stands out for me.
Great pick
