Buffy’s Corner 12/6/20 – Looking at the Week Ahead

Welcome to Buffy’s Corner, where I take a look at what’s coming up this week on the blog! I’m linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly’s blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer:-D

Happy December everyone! It’s definitely starting to feel like the holiday season, even though things are so different this year. I’ve been doing a massive amount of online Christmas shopping, which is turning out to be very dangerous, lol. I should probably stop and evaluate what I’ve bought and spent, but it’s so easy to just click click click on my phone and order gifts.

Last week I told you I’d put the link up for my hubby’s nature photo book, so here it is! I’m linking to the store on his website, where you can also purchase metal prints of any of his photos. Clicking on the book purchase link will take you to the Blurb website where the book is sold. Now folks, these items are not cheap, so I am not here to encourage you to buy the book or the prints, it’s merely an option if you are interested. I was shocked when I found out how much the book costs, honestly! But this was a labor of love for him, and he’s discovered a branch of photography that he loves, only because of Covid. Here’s a photo of the book, and you can also see more images on the website.

Upcoming reviews:

I’m nearly finished with The Ghost Dance Judgement by R.S. Belcher, and I’m so happy to be back in Belcher’s unique, odd and dangerous world of Golgotha. There is a lot going on in this story, but the author knows how to bring everything together at the end. Look for my review tomorrow!

And I wasn’t expecting to start reading Escape Pod, edited by Mur Lafferty and S.B. Divya, which is an anthology based on the podcast of the same name, but it showed up in the mail on Friday and I decided to dive in. And boy am I glad I did! I’ve only read a handful of stories so far, but they are all really strong. The author lineup is amazing! Scalzi, Pratt, Lafferty, Kingfisher, Kowal, Liu, Gailey, Hurley, Cato, Broaddus, Buckell, Doctorow, van Eekhout, Connelly, Jemisin!! OMG. I had requested this over a month ago, but the mail being what it is these days, it just arrived. I’m going to try and finish and get a review up Thursday.

Upcoming reads:

I’m just throwing these three up, knowing that my mood may change. But I expect to choose my next reads from this bunch. We Hear Voices and Secret Santa are review copies, and A Deadly Education is just for fun.

The usual memes…

For the next four Tuesdays in December, I’ll be focusing on my “best of 2020” lists! This week, I’ve decided to tweak the 2020 Mid Year Freak Out Book Tag into the 2020 End of the Year Freak Out Book Tag. I know there is an actual End of the Year tag going around, but it doesn’t really suit me, so I’m sort of doing my own. Ha ha. On Wednesday, I have three new exciting 2021 releases to share with you in Future Fiction, The Friday Face-Off is “lake,” and on Saturday I’ll show you my recent book haul on my Over-Booked post.

Reminder: #SciFiMonth giveaway!

Congratulations!! I wish him the best of luck! Also uh, who set that price? It’s quite… something. (just like my reaction to it)

Ha ha, well he has a small profit on each book, about $20, and the rest is what the company charges him to print it. Crazy right?

  2. It’s great to see your husband’s book out. Yeah, creating small run, or print on demand, photography books can be very pricey, so it’s often done more as a labor of love. It’s always nice to see the good that can come out of bad situations, and this is a nice example of that, him able to branch out and expand his passions. Looking forward to the end of year lists!

  3. I think all artsy type of books are expensive. It has to do with all the color printing involved I guess. It’s a BEAUTIFUL book, though, would make a great Xmas present for loved ones.

  4. That is so cool that your husband has a book now! Those photo coffee table books are never cheap…lol. Hope he does well with his book!

    Have a great week!

  5. Your husband’s book is absolutely beautiful – and it now makes sense why he can take such awesome pics! I had no idea that your other half was a much-respected professional photographer – although the penny should have dropped when I saw the quality of his wildlife pictures:)).

I haven’t yet started my Christmas shopping, though like you I shall be doing a chunk of it online this year – which worries me a bit about the impact on the High Street, which is already struggling… But it’s a question of staying safe, isn’t it? Escape Pod looks fabulous – the names in there read like the who’s who of sci fi writing at present. I hope you have a great week:)).

I really miss going out Christmas shopping, but hopefully next year it will be something to look forward to:-)

  6. I love your site. I was on Feedpost site, and it was the first on it. Your husband’s book is really wonderful. I also run a fiction blog at christuspublishers.com. Please check it out. Any comment will be appreciated.

P.s I had written a comment similar to this earlier but due to some grammatic error, i re-wrote.

  7. We’ve done the majority of our shopping online the last few years, so this year didn’t feel too different in that regard (yay normalcy?).
I’m curious to see what you think about A Deadly Education! I had been excited for that one but I haven’t yet added it to my TBR.
    Have a great week, Tammy!

  8. Oh yes! Shopping online these days has gone overboard for me. I’m trying to put a hard stop to it but it’s taking a while, lol. I’ll be on the look out for your revamped Mid-year Freak Out tag for the end of the year. I love a book tag, so I might do it too closer to the end of the year.

I’m forcing myself to stop shopping because I know I won’t get the gifts in time at this point, lol.

  9. Your husband’s book looks so good. I imagine he’s really pleased it’s such an achievement.
I like the look of We Hear Voices and look forward to reading your thoughts on that.

  10. You are so right about online shopping being dangerous. I did all my Christmas shopping that way this year and I know I spent way too much. I told myself I was done and what do I do? I buy something else last night. I really am done though. Thank you for sharing the link to your husband’s book. His photographs are so beautiful. I hope you enjoy A Deadly Education if you pick it up. I thought it was a fun read. I hope you have a great weekend. Enjoy your reading!
