Buffy’s Corner 9/13/20 – Looking at the Week Ahead

Welcome to Buffy’s Corner, where I take a look at what’s coming up this week on the blog! I’m linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly’s blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer:-D

In case you didn’t know, the west coast of the United States is having a pretty tough fire season this year, and if you live in Oregon, Washington or Northern California in particular, I hope you and your family and friends are OK! Los Angeles hasn’t been hit that hard, so the only thing I can complain about is that the air quality is bad right now, due to smoke-filled skies from a couple of nearby fires. But I’ve seen some horrific photos with orange skies that are downright apocalyptic, and the loss of life and property is awful. The red sun has become a fixture in our skies these days:

On top of COVID and disagreements about how to handle it, not to mention the tension surrounding U.S. politics right now, it’s not like we need anything else, right?

Upcoming reviews:

I absolutely loved The Trials of Koli by M.R. Carey, the second book in his Rampart Trilogy. I loved the first book too, so it’s really no surprise. I’m reminded again of what a skillful writer and storyteller Carey is. Many middle books in trilogies are more “bridge” or “filler” in anticipation of the final book, but The Trials of Koli was a thrilling middle book that made me more eager than ever to read book three, The Fall of Koli. Don’t miss my review tomorrow!

I’ll also be posting a review of They Threw Us Away by Daniel Kraus. This is a MG book about a bunch of sentient teddy bears that have been taken to the dump. As of writing this, I’m still reading it, but it’s pretty good so far!

Upcoming reads:

Look at these pretty pink books on my TBR this week! My next book is The Phlebotomist, which I’ve heard really good things about. After that I’d like to start either The Hive Queen or Bunny, both of which are fairly short. I’d love to get all three read this week, but I’m not sure that will happen. We shall see…

The usual memes…

Tuesday is a “cover freebie” on Top Ten Tuesday, and I’m still trying to decide between a couple of ideas I have. Wednesday I’ve got a couple of cover reveals on Future Fiction, and the Friday Face-Off is “minimalist” which should be fun! I’m also thinking of doing a post highlighting some new Booktube discoveries I’ve made, so if I can pull that together, it might go up next Saturday.

In case you missed…

Here are last week’s posts:

  1. I love the cover and premise behind They Threw Us Away. And the cover does almost bring to mind a burning, post-apocolyptic landscape, so it seems unfortunately appropriate. Looking forward to this week’s posts.

  2. The fires are all so horrible. We’ve also mainly been dealing with the crazy levels of smoke and haze and I know how fortunate we are that that is the extent. One of my biggest fears over my life from living in California I think has become wildfires and the damage they cause. :/ On a light note.. I’m hoping to jump into The Trials of Koli soon, so I’m glad to hear you loved it! I just recently discovered They Threw Us Away and it seemed so interesting, haha. The Phlebotomist sounds really interesting! I hope you have a great week. 🙂 Stay safe!

  3. I know it’s been a tough week for a lot of folks due to the fires. I have several friends on the West Coast and some of them have been at Level 2 Preparedness…and shut up in their homes due to the poor air quality. Every year it seems the fire season gets worse and worse. It’s pretty scary and I hope everyone out there stays as safe as they can!

It does seem that way, this year is especially bad for fires, and unfortunately it doesn’t surprise me:-(

  4. The fires are really bad. I do hope 2021 is better but not holding my breath. I am curious about the teddy bear book! That looks interesting…lol. I seen a print copy someone had on booktube of that bright pink cover with the heart, looks pretty but still not a fan of pink…lol.

    Have a great week!

It’s kind of weird reading about teddy bears that are dumped at the garbage dump, but I’m actually enjoying it:-)

  5. I’ve been watching the fires on the news, it really does look apocalyptic.

The one with the teddies makes me think of Toy Story when they nearly went in the furnace. I’m decluttering just now which has involved the kids cuddly toys coming out there rooms, no way I could throw them out, they’ve been vacuum packed and put in the attic. I couldn’t chuck them!

    Have a good week!

  6. So sorry to hear about the situation with the fires – that red sun is beautiful, but also very ominous.. I’m delighted to hear that you enjoyed The Trials of Koli so much – I look forward to reading your review:)). I hope you have a good week, Tammy and that you and yours have a safe, peaceful week.

  7. I’m hoping to read They Threw Us Away soon, it seems like a light MG story to relax with. Your upcoming reads are also interesting, of the three I’ve only heard of The Phlebotomist, but it’s one I was curious about but didn’t request due to lack of time, so here’s hoping it’s good!

I finished They Threw Us Away last night and wow, not sure what to think about it, lol. I enjoyed it but it was not at all what I was expecting!

  8. That red sun and those awful pics of the skies that I’ve seen are just terrible. I feel for everyone out there suffering through this right now. And oh my gosh- sentient teddy bears? I’m already feeling bad for them! I’m super curious of that! Hope it’s good!

  9. It’s so sad to see all the fires everywhere. The one nearest me is at 44% containment. I believe it’s been blazing for 10 days now. It’s not on the news as much these days because the fires in Northern California, Oregon and Washington are more fresh and bigger, but people are still not able to return home and it’s continuing to grow. It’s all so devastating. I am really worried about my great-aunt and her partner in Washington. They are both elderly with serious health condition, and the fire is really close to them.

I am glad to hear you enjoyed The Trials of Koli. I need to read that. I love Carey’s writing too.

I hope you have a great week, Tammy!

  10. I’m planning on reading the Phlebotomist and looking forward to it.
That picture of the red sun is kind of both hypnotic and scary at the same time. I feel so sad for all the people who have lost so much with these wildfires.
    Lynn 😀
