The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: “The road goes ever on and on.” – A cover with a dark road.
This week I chose The Long Walk by Richard Bachman AKA Stephen King. There are a few dark looking roads on some of these covers! Take a look:
U.S. Signet edition 1999 | Spanish edition 2003 | Gallery Books edition 2016
Polish edition 2009 | Italian edition 1989 | Spanish edition 2013
Spanish edition 2014 | UK edition 1980 | Hungarian edition 2015
Spanish edition (?) | US Kindle edition 1999 | French edition 2001
I like a lot of these covers, although I just noticed that the name Stephen King is on all of them. There are a ton of covers for this book, but I couldn’t find the original paperback with Bachman’s name on it. I own several of the original Bachman paperbacks, found years ago when I heard about these books, but I don’t own this one, unfortunately. I think for a favorite I’m going with the Gallery Books edition. I love the design and the sort of creepy shadows in the foreground!
I like the cover you like. Probably because it reminds me of a photo I once took In the Missouri Botanical Gardens. Irrelevant, I know, but here we are.
Ha ha, I can see how this idea would make a cool photo:-)
I like the one your piced or the US Kindle 1999 version. 🙂
I like that one too!
I completely agree with your choice for this one! The others either seem really muted or extremely busy by comparison!!

I like that it’s fairly simple:-)
Hm, tough decision. I like the 2013 Spanish edition because it looks threatening.:-)

Ooh yes, you’re right. And it captures the vibe of the story.
The Gallery Books edition is a great cover. And I like the Hungarian edition also.
I like those too. There are quite a few good covers!
i own the first cover but definitely prefer your choice! I thought this was King at his best.

I agree, this is more “old style” King.
You’ve nailed the book for this week’s theme, Tammy. And yes – your favourite is the best cover, in my opinion. I’d already chosen it before I saw that it was also your choice, too:)). It’s so very clever and uncluttered…
I go for the uncluttered covers just like you do:-)
This is one I’ve always wanted to read! I like your choice, and also the one beside it to the left.
It’s pretty terrifying, actually!
Since this is a King novel (no matter that at the time he used a pseudonym…), creepy shadows are just *perfect* for the cover… 😉

Yes, the shadows really give it that “King” vibe:-)
Hmm… my favorite is the first one, I think. I love how it’s all dark and creepy looking. But the one you picked is great too!

I really like the first one too. It’s got the “dark road” going on:-)
I love the original 1999 version but I think the one you picked is my overall favorite too! Really loved the insides of this one too. 🙂
Yeah, I really enjoyed this story too:-)
The shadowy silhouette ones are my favourite, also I’ve never read this, I might just check it out!
It’s a scary one! Or maybe the better word is disturbing.
Great pick, Tammy! I love this story, it’s one of my favorite things by King. I do like the cover you went with in the end, I think that one gets the tone of the story well.
This is a great choice for the theme and I love the cover you’ve chosen – all the shadows are really effective.
