Future Fiction #78: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Three exciting new books, take a look!

Everybody has secrets…

For years, Benedict Lyon has been living a lie. Not even his family knows the truth he’s been keeping from the world. Only Emmeline knows his secret—and she’s dead.

…some are darker than others…

When the matriarch of the Lyon family passes away, Benedict is summoned home for the funeral. Emmeline urges Benedict not to go, certain that if he returns to that house, neither one of them will escape.

…but are they worth dying for?

Their presence in the family home causes the spirit of Gloria Lyon to become restless, and as the remaining members of the Lyon family attempt to put their mother to rest, long buried secrets, some deadlier than others, are unearthed. Who will survive…

The Midnight Lullaby

The Midnight Lullaby by Cheryl Low. Releases in July from Grinning Skull Press. I just happened to spot Cheryl Low’s Instagram post about her upcoming new horror novel, and of course I rushed off to the publisher to request a copy as soon as I could! You may remember my review of Infernal, another Grinning Skull Press book that I loved. I can hardly wait for this one! Not up on Goodreads yet, but I linked to the publisher’s website.

Seventeen-year-old Valeria is one of the only survivors of the freeze, a dark magical hold Knnot Mountain unleashed over her village. Everyone, including her family, is trapped in an unbreakable sheet of ice. Ever since, she’s been on the run from the Czar, who is determined to imprison any who managed to escape. Valeria finds refuge with the Thieves Guild, doing odd jobs with her best friend Alik, the only piece of home she has left.

That is, until he is brutally murdered.

A year later, she discovers Alik is alive and being held against his will. To buy his freedom, she must lead a group of cutthroats and thieves on a perilous expedition to the very mountain that claimed her family. Only something sinister slumbers in the heart of Knnot.

And it has waited years for release.

The Bright & the Pale by Jessica Rubinkowski. Releases in March 2021 from Quill Tree Books (HarperCollins). Oh my lord that cover!! It’s glorious. I mean, that title font treatment is making me so happy! I love the sound of this story as well:-)

A charming historical fantasy with a tender love story at its core, from the author of Unnatural Magic.

Hard-drinking petty thief Dellaria Wells is down on her luck in the city of Leiscourt—again. Then she sees a want ad for a female bodyguard, and she fast-talks her way into the high-paying job. Along with a team of other women, she’s meant to protect a rich young lady from mysterious assassins.

At first Delly thinks the danger is exaggerated, but a series of attacks shows there’s much to fear. Then she begins to fall for Winn, one of the other bodyguards, and the women team up against a mysterious, magical foe who seems to have allies everywhere.

The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry by C.M. Waggoner. Releases in November 2020 from Ace Books.  Another gorgeous cover! This doesn’t appear to be a sequel to Unnatural Magic, although the cover style reminds me of that book. I’m behind and haven’t yet read Unnatural Magic, but I’m definitely not going to miss this one!

  1. As ever, an excellent selection of books – the cover for The Bright and the Pale is outstanding! But the premise that caught my eye is The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry – what fun! Thank you for sharing, Tammy:))

  2. In The Bright & The Pale refuge is taken in the Thieves Guild. In The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry our protagonist is an actual thief. Hhmmm… Makes me wonder if one of the secrets in The Midnight Lullaby might involve a theft of some kind. 🙂

  3. Well you did it. You went and sunk my wishlist once again. I love the font and the coldness of The Bright & the Pale. And that horror novel. Yes please! Some great choices this week (and every week).

  4. I’m practically drooling over The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry. That sounds so good! The Bright and the Pale also sounds like something I would like. Three great books! I hope you enjoy them when you read them!

  5. OMG! I totally confused C.M. Waggoner for the author of Walk the Wild With Me which I didn’t like at all so I passed over The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry…thanks for clearing that up because I actually did really like Unnatural Magic 😀

I recognized Waggoner immediately because this cover is so similar to the first book:-)

Oh, I am loving the sounds of The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry — the worldbuilding in that sounds so promising!

I’ve heard really good things about C.M. Waggoner, so I’m definitely reading The Ruthless Lady’s Guide, plus that title:-)

  7. I had no idea that The Bright & The Pale had a cover yet but it’s stunning I adore the colour scheme and can’t wait for it to come out! I love the cover of the last book too, I wouldn’t really have thought of having a pink cover but with all of the little details it’s fantastic.
