Welcome to Buffy’s Corner, where I take a look at what’s coming up this week on the blog! I’m linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly’s blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer:-D
The world continues to spin, but life is so unsettling right now. I’m grateful for the way the country is coming together over #BlackLivesMatter, and I support the protests and everything that is being done in the name of the BLM movement. I know you’re probably being bombarded with resources, but here are a couple I think are pretty cool, if you’re so inclined:
LitHub: You can order today from these independent Black-owned bookstores
25 Books by Contemporary Black Authors
And turning to something a little lighter in tone, my husband continues to scour the city for photo ops, and today I’m happy to share yet another crow photo (hey, it’s a thing!) as well as this stately and handsome tortoise:
The tortoise lives down the street from us and he’s huge!
Upcoming Reviews:
I veered off my planned reading this past week and decided to grab Corporate Gunslinger by Doug Engstrom. Wow, this book is not “feel good” at all, if that’s what you’re looking for these days, but it’s a tense futuristic thriller that is impossible to put down. Look for my review tomorrow.
And I should finish Hella by David Gerrold in time to get a review up later this week. This is such fun, and I’m getting some Outpost vibes from it. The narrator is a young autistic boy and I just love hearing the story from his point of view.
The usual memes…
Last week was a weird one so I didn’t see any cover reveals that I want to use on Future Fiction. But never fear, something will come up and I’m sure I’ll have three new books to share on Wednesday. The Friday Face-Off is “bodice ripper” lol, and I already have a good book for that theme!
Upcoming reads:
This is the week I finally start We Ride the Storm by Devin Madson, I swear! And I’m really excited. And for something completely different and a book I know will be light and fluffy and a quick read, I’d like to follow it with Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston. But you never know. My mood reading has been kicking in lately and I may change things up:-D
Watching/Listening:
I know what you’re thinking: I’ve already watched all of Riverdale. BUT I’ve decided to start over with Season 1 and watch it again. Because I can, and I find comfort in familiar things, lol. I’m also continuing to listen to Borrasca, the podcast starring Riverdale’s Jughead, Cole Sprouse. It’s really good, give it a try if you like creepy horror!
In case you missed…
My posts from last week:
What’s On My Plate – June 2020
Black SFF Authors You Should Be Reading
Dragon Unleashed by Grace Draven – Review
Spectre Deep 6 by Jennifer Brody and Jules Rivera – Review
Thank you for those resources — anything that continues to educate us is a good thing imo. I hear you on mood reading this week — you just have to go with what grabs you (though Bookish and the beast looks very cute!)
I think I’ll be read for cute very soon:-)
The synopsis for Hella did indeed suggest some Outpost vibes, but hearing your confirmation makes me even more determined to add it to my TBR… 🙂

It’s definitely more of a “kinder gentler Outpost,” without all the killing and drama:-)
I LOVE that crow photo!
Thanks Heather! My husband takes really good bird photos, imo:-)
That tortoise! We have a turtle that makes is way through our yard sometimes. I got a picture of him this week (in his shell, I scared him!)
Oh cool. This guy is almost 2′ long, he’s pretty big.
I also find hope in the protests that maybe the corrupt politicians and abusive police won’t be able to go on with their business as usual. Happy reading, stay safe and be well!
Yes, we can only hope:-) Thanks Anne!
Thanks for sharing those resources. I’m also loving your hubby’s crow photos. He takes great pics!
Thanks Suzanne! He’s more of a people photographer, but during quarantine he’s been forced to take photos differently:-)
As usual the pics are amazing!! And I am looking forward to your reviews because the books seem interesting!!
Thanks Susy:-)
So today we have representatives from both the Hollow Kingdom and Discworld! I love it. Looking forward to reading your thoughts on Hella, We Ride the Storm, or anything else you decide to read, whether from mood reading or not. And I absolutely understand the draw and enjoyment of rewatching those special shows that pull us in.
Oh you’re right, I never thought of Discworld! Ha ha what I meant was, of course I planned it that way! lol;-)
Awww, I need to catch up with Ashley Poston’s series, I really liked Geekerella! I should be getting to We Ride the Storm either this week or next…that pub date is coming up soon, eek!!
I’m trying to stay on top of my release dates this month, so We Ride the Storm is definitely next;-)
Definitely to mood reading at the moment. Whatever keeps you in your reading zone really.
ST!!
Lynn 😀
I know, ST! And I should have mentioned, I’ve been throwing Cheetos out in the backyard for the crows, and no surprise, they love them:-)
I hope to start Hella later this week – look forward to hearing what you think! Ha ha, can’t believe you’re starting Riverdale again, but hey, whatever makes you happy. 🙂
I know, I’m crazy! I just love the characters and don’t want to leave them, lol.
Ooh love the tortoise pic. Cool! And thanks for sharing those resources. One nice thing that’s coming out of this, I think, is people educating themselves and whatnot. Being white myself I feel like there’s a lot more I need to know to understand. And I’m watching Riverdale too. 🙂

I don’t know what I’ll do when Netflix takes Riverdale off its schedule!
I love the crow pics and that tortoise is so cool. I love them too. I think it’s great you’re watching Riverdale again, I think I’ll bury myself in season 4 of 13 Reasons Why this week. I’m glad you enjoyed Hella and I also want to read Corporate Gunslinger. Can’t wait for your review.
I’m hoping someone else in my family will join in and watch Riverdale with me!
I’m so happy to hear about the Outpost vibes of Hella, honestly that makes it want me to make it my next read!
I want to say it’s like a “gentler” Outpost because the colony is so well organized and everyone is nice to each other. I’m curious to see how it all turns out!
I love those photos! Just love seeing photos of animals haha. It’s one joy that we can have right now. 🙂
Me too, my husband and i both love animals so I’m glad he takes photos that I can share:-)
Those are fun pictures! Is the tortoise a pet? or wild? And I can’t wait to read Bookish and the Beast <3

The tortoise is a pet! The owners have a very short (three foot) fence around their front yard filled with grass, and the tortoise just cruises around the yard all day and eats grass. I personally would be afraid someone would steal him, but it’s a very nice safe neighborhood:-)
I love the animal photos! I wish mine would turn out that clear. I hope you have a good week!

Thanks Aj, my husband is a pro photographer so he has really good cameras and lenses:-)
Great post, Tammy. I appreciate the resources too. I keep adding to my summer reading list. Love the photos! That crow!
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts for We Ride the Storm! Hella is one I really want to read as well. I’m also loving your husband’s photos, I say keep ’em coming. 🙂

That crow is a beauty!! And the tortoise looks quite dignified as well 🙂 I think Bookish and the Beast looks like an amusing book. Thanks for sharing!

Those are gorgeous photos. Thank you for sharing! Thank you too for the links. I looked into the Los Angeles bookstore since it is closest and noticed they are not taking orders currently because they have had so many. I am glad to see so much business coming in for them! I hope they all are faring as well and continue to do so. I am glad so many people are coming together to protest against racial injustice. It gives me some measure of hope. I only hope real change comes out of this. I may not be physically at the protests right now, but I do want to do what I can behind the scenes to help as much as I can. This is important. Black lives do matter. And it is time the country not only recognizes it, but acts like it too.
I am really curious about Bookish and the Beast and hope you enjoy it when you read it. Have a great week, Tammy!
