Future Fiction #68: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Check out these three October releases! Something to look forward to, I’m hoping by October we might be almost back to living normal lives…

In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial event proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world.

Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger. Described as harmless, the passenger, Serapio, is a young man, blind, scarred, and cloaked in destiny. As Xiala well knows, when a man is described as harmless, he usually ends up being a villain.

Crafted with unforgettable characters, Rebecca Roanhorse has created an epic adventure exploring the decadence of power amidst the weight of history and the struggle of individuals swimming against the confines of society and their broken pasts in the most original series debut of the decade.

Black Sun (Between Earth & Sky #1) by Rebecca Roanhorse. Releases in October 2020 from Gallery/Saga Press. OK, who didn’t see this cover reveal last week? Isn’t this stunning? And the story sounds just as good as the cover. I’m ready for a new Roanhorse series!

A murder on the high seas. A detective duo. A demon who may or may not exist.

It’s 1634 and Samuel Pipps, the world’s greatest detective, is being transported to Amsterdam to be executed for a crime he may, or may not, have committed. Travelling with him is his loyal bodyguard, Arent Hayes, who is determined to prove his friend innocent.

But no sooner are they out to sea than devilry begins to blight the voyage. A twice-dead leper stalks the decks. Strange symbols appear on the sails. Livestock is slaughtered.

And then three passengers are marked for death, including Samuel.

Could a demon be responsible for their misfortunes?

With Pipps imprisoned, only Arent can solve a mystery that connects every passenger onboard. A mystery that stretches back into their past and now threatens to sink the ship, killing everybody on board.

The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton. Releases in October 2020 from Sourcebooks Landmark. I might be the last person on the planet who hasn’t read The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, but I don’t want to miss his next book. Doesn’t this sound good?

A dazzling novel about all the choices that go into a life well lived, from the internationally bestselling author of Reasons to Stay Alive and How To Stop Time.

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?

In The Midnight Library, Matt Haig’s enchanting new novel, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision. Faced with the possibility of changing her life for a new one, following a different career, undoing old breakups, realizing her dreams of becoming a glaciologist; she must search within herself as she travels through the Midnight Library to decide what is truly fulfilling in life, and what makes it worth living in the first place.

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. Releases in October 2020 from Viking. Matt Haig is another author I’ve been meaning to read but just haven’t yet. I’m always up for a book about bookstores or libraries, and it seems like this is going to be a feel good story:-D

  1. Ohhh my god… the cover of Black Sun is amazing. And it has a great synopsis on top of that! The Devil and the Dark Water sounds also good. I love that it’s set in 1634. That’s right up my alley. And I also love stories set in libraries of bookstores so The Midnight Library sounds freaking good too. Just all looks and sounds topnotch!

I’m so excited for The Devil and the Dark Water, even though I haven’t read his books before, hope it’s good!

  2. Sarah

All great picks Tammy! I meant to put Black Sun up for my CWW post today and just didn’t get to it in time. I’m super excited for it. I know Roanhorse is capable of awesome things but her other series wasn’t quite for me. Hopeful this one will be more my speed.

It sounds pretty different from her other series, so hopefully it will work for you. In any case, the cover is pretty great:-)

  3. I missed the cover reveal of Black Sun, so you just revealed it for me! It is in my TBR, though, and sounds great. And I like the look of the other two, as well. This week they all appeal.

I loved Matt Haig’s book The Humans so much I ran around insisting everybody read it at once. I’m behind on his other books, but, yeah, The Midnight Library will be on my want list.

  5. I would LOVE to get hold of Rebecca Roanhorse’s Black Sun. And Matt Haig book, of course. While I’ve read him – his book The Radleys is one of my favourite alltime reads – I haven’t read ENOUGH of his work. So I love the sound of this one. And the Turton book – another new author for me… WHAT are you doing to my TBR????

    • Tammy

I actually think I might have a copy of The Radleys. One of these days I’m going to catalog my entire library so I will actually know these things, lol.

  6. YES to Matt Haig! I didn’t know he had a new book coming out this year, but I will absolutely read it. And I”d love to read the new Rebecca Roanhorse… but does this mean she’s done with the Sixth World series? I hope not!

Omg The Midnight Library sounds like exactly the kind of existential crisis-inducing book I love to inflict on myself haha. I’ve also not read The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle yet but The Devil and the Dark Water also sounds awesome. Added both to my TBR.

I’m not familiar with Rebecca Roanhorse but a lot of people seem to love her. I feel like I should check her out some day down the line.

  8. Don’t worry you’re not alone as I haven’t read that Hardcastle book either! I do want to read this authors new one though it sounds great! Also haven’t read Matt Haig but his new book sounds cool too! 🙂

    • Tammy

Oh good:-) And I’ve heard great things about Matt Haig too. Maybe 2020 will be the year we both read both authors;-)

  9. You always feature the best books. I don’t even know which of these I want to read more. Haig’s book or Turton’s. Or Roanhorse’s. They all sound good. I hope you enjoy them when you get a chance to read them!

  10. I can’t decide whether I want to read Black Sun or not, but I am for sure absolutely in love with that cover. It’s so gorgeous! Oh, I did see The Midnight Library! I read Matt Haig’s How to Stop Time and really enjoyed it, so when you add in the bookish theme, I’m all over this one! I’m ready for it lol.

    • Tammy

I have a copy of How to Stop Time, so now that you mention it, I should add it to my queue!
