Over-Booked [119] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

How is everyone doing? Honestly, I am enjoying staying at home, since it’s what I crave during normal times! My husband is getting restless, though, since he’s much more social than I am. I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe and reading a ton of books:-D

Very few physical review copies are trickling in, so my physical haul is very small this week. I do have some purchases that arrived, so I’ll share those as well. I also added a few NetGalley books to my pile, but otherwise I’m glad to have an opportunity to start catching up. So let’s get right to it!

Physical Books for Review:

I was not expecting a surprise book from DAW, but I’m thrilled to have a copy of Hella by David Gerrold, which I just featured in my Most Anticipated Books for the Second Quarter. Thank you DAW, this is going to be a blast!

I’ve already read Eden by Tim Lebbon and really enjoyed it. If you’re in the mood for some (sometimes) gnarly horror, then look no further. I loved the premise and fast-paced plot of this book. Thanks to Titan Books for the copy!

And a lovely surprise from Orbit Books arrived, Ashes of the Sun by Django Wexler, the first book in a new series. This is probably the last physical Orbit book I’ll see for a while, so I’m basking in its beauty:-D Thank you Orbit!

Digital Books for Review:

I’m happy that all of these books have been featured on Future Fiction. I’m trying to only request or download books I’m very excited for, and all five of these fit that description:

The Preserve by Ariel S. Winter is one I featured recently on the blog, and I’m very happy to be approved for this on NetGalley. This sounds like a cool futuristic murder mystery!

The Cabin On Souder Hill by Lonnie Busch is an eARC I was able to download since I’m auto approved by the publisher, and I held off for about a week and then just couldn’t stop myself any longer, lol.

Out of Body by Jeffrey Ford. I can’t believe this, but I don’t think I’ve actually read anything by Ford before, so this novella will be my first. It sounds pretty good!

I was offered a NetGalley widget for Architects of Memory by Karen Osborne, an upcoming Tor title. This is a debut novel that sounds amazing, and I can’t wait to get started!

I’m excited to be approved for Chaos Reigning by Jessie Mihalik. I’m a big fan of this sci-fi romance series!

Big thanks to Tor, Tor.com, Blackstone Publishing, Harper Voyager and Atria/Emily Bestler Books.

Purchased:

My Goldsboro signed edition of The Deep by Alma Katsu arrived, although I’m disappointed that they didn’t do sprayed edges. Seriously, this book is begging for blue or black edges, lol. I actually prefer this UK cover to the U.S. one.

And during lockdown, my vow is to only buy books from independent booksellers (no Amazon, in other words!). I bought a signed copy of The Glass Hotel from one of my favorite bookstores (that I’ve never been to) Parnassus Books.

I recently backed Dyrk Ashton’s Kickstarter for Paternus: Rise of Gods. This is a lovely signed hardcover edition, and I’ve heard nothing but great things about this book.

And finally, a spur of the moment buy, Sharks in the Time of Saviors by Kawai Strong Washburn. The story is set in Hawaii and has elements of magic realism. Plus take a look at that cover! I’m collecting books with sharks on the cover, not sure why, but I just love this one.

And that’s my latest haul:-D Have you read any of these books?

  1. I actually won a copy of Sharks in the Time of Saviors from goodreads, but it never arrived. Not sure if it got lost, stolen off my doorstep, or was affected by the virus. So I’m really curious to hear what you think of it. I like the looks of several of the others, as well.

Oh bummer! Maybe it’s just lost in the weird mail that’s going on now. I hope it shows up!

  2. I was gonna read Eden the other week, but then the Titan IG tour got all rearranged because of COVID-19 reasons. Now I’m not scheduled to post until late May. Sounds like a great book, I’m excited to get to it soon!

  3. Will

Eagerly anticipating Ashes of the Sun! I held off on buying many books because I’m still rather behind on my TBR, but I FEEL the need to acquire fresh books. It’s… disquieting. Like vampires and blood, I assume. Also I like the idea of a shark-cover collection! How many have you so far?

    • Tammy

I’m not sure if I have more than two shark books, but I keep seeing them and thinking I need to buy them all, lol.

Getting the mail these days is so sad! I’m getting books once in a while but nothing like I used to.

  4. For the most part, I’m enjoying staying at home too. As long as I have plenty to read and plenty to eat, I’m good, lol. Looks like a great haul this week too. I really need to place some orders with Indie bookstores. I keep meaning to do that and then get sidetracked.

  5. Life is pretty normal for me… I’m still going to work about 60 hours a week. lol When I get home though I’m having SUCH a hard time focusing on reading. I just had to look at my Goodreads list and I haven’t finished a book since March 23rd. You’ve got some good looking titles on here though. Going to check them out and hope for some inspiration. 🙂 Glad to hear you’re doing well.

  6. Man, so many good books! I saw Hella pop up on NG and I had to really talk myself out of requesting it, like I need more ARCs right now lol. I’ll be interested what you think of Ashes in the Sun! I keep meaning to read Django Wexler, ever since I stumbled across his work at the library and I fell in love with his name. xD I’ve got Out of Body, too, and I’m so excited because it looks fantastic!

I’ve heard such great things about Wexler, and I know what you mean, he’s got the coolest name ever!

  7. I don’t mind staying at home, although I get restless at times lol. Mainly when I want to go out to eat or to a bookstore! 🙂

Architects of Memory looks great, and I love the cover of Chaos Reigning!

Yeah, eating out is what I’m missing most, I think. Also just being able to go shopping whenever and wherever I want and browse and just buy whatever, instead of focusing on “essentials.” lol

Love this haul! You’re right the UK cover of the deep is much better. Anxious to see what you think of Hella. And I’ll have to check out the shark book. That sounds awesome.

    • Tammy

I hope I get time to read the shark book, I feel like I’m drowning in review copies right now (and NetGalley is so out of control as you know!)

  9. Great bunch of books! I agree that the UK cover of The Deep is better! LOL. I am also really curious about Eden so hopefully I can find it on overdrive, it’s definitely going on my list of books to try!

    • Tammy

Me too! I have really enjoyed both the first two books so I feel pretty good about Chaos Reigning:-)

  10. Neither my husband or I are very social beings so staying home has been ok. He is still working so he gets out for that and I do the shopping once a week – masks and all. You got some great books and I’m thrilled to see that you finally got The Preserve. I managed to finish the new Grady Hendrix book Saturday and really loved it!

    • Tammy

I’ve been restless too. For some reason I’ve been spending a LOT of time on Facebook, which I usually don’t do. I guess all the horrific coronavirus stories are getting to me, because sometimes I have trouble sleeping as well:-/

  11. There are some things I enjoy about staying home. The extra time in the mornings not having to get the kids ready for school and not having to commute to work are a huge plus.

Oooh, you got Hella. I can’t wait to hear what you think. I’m also curious about Architects of Memory.

    • Tammy

I think by the time we finally get to leave the house for good, we’ll all be ready, no matter how much we like being home.
