Future Fiction #63: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

A big cover reveal and a couple of other cool finds:

A brand new space opera on an epic scale from the New York Times bestselling author of a beloved YA fantasy series.

It was supposed to be a routine research mission on an uncolonized planet. But when xenobiologist Kira Navárez finds an alien relic beneath the surface of the world, the outcome transforms her forever and will alter the course of human history.

Her journey to discover the truth about the alien civilization will thrust her into the wonders and nightmares of first contact, epic space battles for the fate of humankind, and the farthest reaches of the galaxy.

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini. Releases in September 2020 from Tor Books. This is Paolini’s highly anticipated new adult novel, and I’m approaching it with caution simply because the transition from YA to adult doesn’t always work out for authors. We shall see! But I love this cover:-D

Neuromancer for a non-binary age: an action-packed techno-thriller with a side of magical realism.

Everything’s for hire – even magic.

If you need something done, they’re the best: a tough, resourceful mage, a lab-created genderless hacker and a cyborg with a big gun.

But when they’re hired by a virtual construct to destroy the other copies of himself, and the down payment is a new magical skill, Cloke knows this job is going to be a league harder than anything they’ve ever done.

The Chimera Code by Wayne Santos. Releases in July 2020 from Solaris. Solaris isn’t a publisher I usually follow, so this is a bit of a departure for me. But wow, this cover completely drew me in, and I love the sound of this story. For those looking for some non-binary representation in your fiction, take a look at this book!

A hell-bound fantasy starring demons, damsels, and an unlikely hero.

Sixteen-year-old Sam Sullinger lives in the shadow of adolescence. He’s lost among his overachieving siblings, constantly knocked down by his harsh father, and bullied daily. His only solace is his best friend and crush, Harper.

In a grand plan designed to help him confess his love to Harper, Sam accidentally sets off a series of events that lead to her being kidnapped and taken to Hell. Racked with guilt, Sam makes a bold decision for the first time in his life: He’s going to rescue his only friend.

Sam is thrust into a vivid world fraught with demons, vicious beasts, and a falling city. And every leg of his journey reminds him that he isn’t some brave knight on a quest — he’s an insecure teenager yearning to make his mark on at least one world.

The Book of Sam by Rob Shapiro. Releases in August 2020 from Dundurn. I just ran across this on NetGalley and it sounds so good!

I would happily read all three, I think; although The Book of Sam appeals to me the most.

Me too, I didn’t even know about The Book of Sam until yesterday, and now it’s become a must read:-)

I agree, actually that whole blurb for The Book of Sam is making me want to hit the request button on NetGalley!

I’m seeing a lot of buzz about Paolini’s new one. It is curious how many authors are trying to switch from YA to Adult. I can’t tell if it’s an over saturated market or what. Either way it sounds awesome! And The Chimera Code looks like a lot of fun too!

Paolini’s name is so big, I’m sure this book is going to get even more hype. Which of course makes me want to read it!

  3. I read Eragon years go and liked it but it seems to be a series that people are middle of the line about. That’s why it surprises me this one is already getting so much hype. I will probably eventually grab it when my library gets it but there’s no hurry. I saw The Book of Sam too and I have to admit I’m loving the concept. It’s one I’ll definitely be checking out.

I’m debating whether to request The Book of Sam. I’m trying to cut back but it sounds so good!

I agree, I love the cover of to Sleep in a Sea of Stars. Blue always gets me, for some reason:-)

  4. Great covers! I’d be interested in hearing responses to the Paolini book before even thinking about reading it. I liked Eragon way back when, but just couldn’t get into the follow-up books at all.

  5. Ooh, adult space opera from Christoper Paolini? I’m definitely intrigued! It is a stunning cover. And wow, I am super into the sound of The Book of Sam–sounds pretty intense! I also love that cover design.

  6. I really like the title, and cover for, To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. But I share your caution. Here’s hoping, though.

  7. I never did read The Inheritance Cycle, especially after seeing the page count and friends and family saying it was really wordy. I may give his new book a try, particularly as I love space operas and the cover and synopsis sound really good. The Book of Sam I wouldn’t look at originally from the cover, but after reading about it, I’m adding it to my tbr. Thanks for sharing!

I agree, the cover for The Book of Sam doesn’t exactly fit the story, but the blurb makes me want to read it for sure:-)

  8. Oh haiiii, the Book of Sam is clearly written for me, and therefore, it’d be rude of me not to read it. 😉 To Sleep in a Sea of Stars has a gorgeous cover. I’m always cautious about YA authors going to adult, too, because like you said, sometimes it’s a bumpy ride, but I’ll be looking forward to giving it a try, at least!
