What’s On My Plate – March 2020

And the familiar lament begins…”How can it possibly be MARCH??” Seriously, I’m still not done with February. I did not get to all the February books I wanted to, so this month will most likely be a mix. But in good news, I have got a small jump on my March review pile. I’ve already read The Deep, which was one of my most highly anticipated books of 2020 (look for a review tomorrow), and I’ve got a review coming up this week for You Let Me In, which has March release date in the UK, but not the U.S. But despite this “jump,” March looks like another overwhelming month with just too many good books to read. As always, this is more of a “menu” than a firm TBR, since I haven’t managed to learn how to speed read yet! Here’s is what I’m tackling this month:

March Releases

So by the time you read this post, I will have finished You Let Me In by Camilla Bruce. Damn, this book was amazing! I really hadn’t paid much attention to the blurb and it completely caught me by surprise—in a good way. U.S. readers will have to wait until May to read this, but UK folks can read this very soon. My very enthusiastic review will be up this Thursday.

Docile by K.M. Szpara is another highly anticipated book, and although I’m not going to get my review up by release date, I will be reading and reviewing it this month.

I’ve been on a Sarah Gailey kick, and so it’s a good thing they have a new book out this month:-D When We Were Magic sounds like fun!

Cries from the Lost Island by Kathleen O’Neal Gear has quite a few mixed reviews on Goodreads, which is making me nervous. We shall see..

The Deep by Alma Katsu was unfortunately, a mixed bag for me. On one hand, I loved Alma’s gorgeous writing and atmospheric descriptions of the Titanic, but the plot itself was very slow and the promised supernatural aspects were sparse. Look for my review tomorrow!

Hearts of Oak by Eddie Robson has some good reviews already, and I can hardly wait to start this shortish novel!

Anthropocene Rag by Alex Irvine is my third Tor.com review book of March, and it’s another one I’ve very curious about. Reviews are so-so but I’m hoping to form my own opinion.

Cyber Shogun Revolution by Peter Tieryas. I absolutely loved Tieryas’ Mecha Samurai Empire, and I believe this is a stand-alone novel but set in the same world. Can’t wait!

The Last Human by Zack Jordan. This sounds like a fun space opera, and it’s got decent reviews so far, so I’m on board!

Hollow by Rhonda Parrish. I was offered a review copy by the author months ago, and it’s finally time to slot it into my review schedule. I’ve heard really good things about this book, and I’m looking forward to it.

Otaku by Chris Kluwe. Written by a former NFL player, this debut looks really good, and the cover is one of my favorites of 2020 so far:-D

The Companions by Katie M. Flynn. I requested this on NetGalley a long time ago, which is dangerous when you finally get to the release month and realize just how many books you’ve requested for that month. Lots of two and three star reviews on Goodreads are making me a little hesitant.

The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune. I can hardly wait to start this, so many good reviews and even a couple from bloggers I trust, yay!

The Killing Fog by Jeff Wheeler. I’d love to fit this in, but I have to admit it’s not a priority. BUT so many good reviews, I’m torn! Somebody read it so I can decide!

February Catch-Up

These are my five February “regrets” because February was short and my list was too long. I’ll be trying to sneak these in among all my March books. Wish me luck! (Not going to link them, sorry)

April Get Ahead:

Ha ha, as if! But hey, I have to put it out there. These are three of my most anticipated April releases, and if possible I’d love to get a jump on a couple of these at least. I didn’t list Shorefall, because it comes out near the end of April, so I doubt I’ll tackle it in March, but it’s another book I’m super excited for.

And there is my super, impossibly long list of books I want to read this month. Who wants to help? Ha ha.

  1. You have a nice list for March! I am reading The Boatman’s Daughter right now. I’m actually purposely reading it slow to savor Davidson’s story. I think people who liked In the Valley of the Sun will like this one, same type of poetic prose which some people do NOT like, I get it, but I love it.

I just finished The Companions! I don’t think it really deserves the low star rating it’s got on GoodReads. It’s a slower narrative, true. And the multiple POVs can be a little frustrating, but I mostly enjoyed it.

I’ll look forward to your review of The Deep and You Let Me In! My March is also going to be out of control and I’m getting antsy to read books outside all the ARCs I requested last fall when March felt so far away.

I’m so glad to hear that about The Companions, and I don’t mind multiple POVs, so hopefully it will work for me:-)

  3. Gosh, I so feel you with February suddenly being gone. Someone should investigate. I suspect foul play here!

Somehow, all of my March releases are packed into, like, the first two weeks? It’s crazy. But hopefully, that gives me some time to get ahead on April releases? Ha, talk about wishful thinking.

I saw on Twitter that You Let Me In broke you a bit, and I’ve got the ARC, and now I am all sorts of skeptical. Yes, I too want to be broken, but can I afford to be broken right now? xD I’ll be reading The Deep soon, so I look forward to your review (though, if it’s light on supernatural elements, that’s a bummer, since that’s what attracted me to it in the first place). I’ve got The Last Human and The House in the Cerulean Sea, too! Both seem like they’re really good. Ugh, and the same feel about Jeff Wheeler. I recently had a blogger with similar tastes read it and highly recommend it as a fantastic fantasy, so now I sort of … need to read it, I guess? We should draw straws lol. Short one has to read it first and let all the rest of us know if we should prioritize it. 😛

You Let Me In just resonated with me, for some reason. There are some heartbreaking moments, but overall it’s just a damn good story! I’m dying for other bloggers to read and review it because I’m hoping someone else will love it too:-)

  4. I’m really curious about the Deep. And Bent heavens which I’m strongly leaning towards getting… I see Mogsy just reviewed but I haven’t been over there yet to read it, gonna do that tonight lol as I blog hop. It looks good. 🙂

I just started Bent Heavens but I’m not quite far enough in to tell what I think. But I have high hopes for it!

  5. Okay, now I am worried because I know you loved The Hunger and I hated it and now you say that you thought The Deep was slow. Barb and I are going to try and buddy read it in April, but now I am afraid it might end up a DNF cause boy I thought The Hunger was slow…lol.

    • Tammy

Ha ha, yeah I remember you and Barb didn’t like The Hunger, so I’ll be very curious to see what you think of this, hey you might love it!

  6. I posted my March goals on Twitter this weekend and looks like we have a few of the same books on our tbr…I’m not even looking to get ahead for April though, I doubt I’ll get there, lol!

    • Tammy

Yeah, it’s just wishful thinking for me to look ahead to March. Maybe by the end of the month…

  7. Ambitious stack! I’d been hoping to read Mecha Samurai Empire ahead of Cyber Shogun Revolution, but I think I”m going to table those book for now and catch-up later (promises promises….). Looking forward to your review for The Last Human!
Hoping I get to everything I want this month, but with the massive Legacy of Ash clocking in at 700+ pages, we’ll see!

I’m not even going to try to read Legacy of Ash until April! March is just so out of control. I need a clone so I can read everything I want to:-)

  8. Good luck with all of these! I’m saving Docile til next month because I want to read it for my new bingo card that starts in April LOL. I’m really looking forward to your thoughts on that one!

  9. I’m so stoked that someone else is excited about Hearts of Oak! It’s one of the few books that I pre-ordered because I have this deep deep internalised feeling that I will absolutely adore that novel. I’m not entirely sure it’s rational but I am going to go with the emotional flow and just trust my gut on this lmao. Also: The House in the Cerulean Sea just speaks to me. Everything in the synopsis just makes me happy and hyped. The two h’s that matter lol. PS: I’m constantly one second away from buying The Boatman’s Daughter so maybe I’ll just wait until you finished it to make a decision? haha.

    • Tammy

I hope we both love Hearts of Oak! I’ve heard really good things so far, so fingers crossed:-)

  10. I don’t think I’ll end up reading any of these anytime soon, so I can’t help you pick. 🙂 But there are several in the list I’m curious about. And I did enjoy The Book of Koli. It’s the first book I’ve read by M.R. Carey, though I watched the movie version of The Girl With All the Gifts.

  11. Happy reading in March! Especially curious to see what you’ll make of Docile and I have already been seeing positive reviews for When We Were Magic as well. I would be curious to see what you make of the Wolf of Oren-Yaro if you do manage to sneak it in. And I love Grady Hendrix and am so excited about his latest including vampires!!
