Future Fiction #61: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

There’s almost too much excitement in this post, everyone keep calm! Two exciting cover reveals from Orbit, and a spooky horror story from a beloved author, take a look:

In 1893, there’s no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.

But when the Eastwood sisters–James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna–join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women’s movement into the witch’s movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote-and perhaps not even to live-the sisters will need to delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive.

There’s no such thing as witches. But there will be.

The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow. Releases in October 2020 from Orbit Books. OMG, I literally saw this last night as I was poking around Goodreads, and I had to immediately add it to this post! I’m beyond excited to see what Alix E. Harrow does next, after loving The Ten Thousand Doors of January!

Dazzling space battles, intergalactic politics, and rogue AI collide in the second book in this epic space opera by award-winning author Megan O’Keefe.

Sanda and Tomas are fleeing for their lives after letting the most dangerous smartship in the universe run free. Now, unsure of who to trust, Sanda knows only one thing for certain – to be able to save herself from becoming a pawn of greater powers, she needs to discover the secret of the coordinates hidden in her skull.

But getting to those coordinates is a problem she can’t solve alone. They exist beyond a dead gate – a Casimir gate that opened up into a dead-end system without resources worth colonizing, and was sealed off. To get through the dead gate, she needs the help of the enemy Nazca. But some Nazca are only interested in the chip in her head – and they’ll crack her open to get to it.

Chaos Vector (The Protectorate #2) by Megan E. O’Keefe. Releases in July 2020 from Orbit Books. Oooh this book just came out of nowhere! I don’t think it was even on Goodreads until a few days ago. In any case, I was so excited to see Orbit reveal the cover of the sequel to Velocity Weapon, which I really enjoyed last year.

A young woman discovers a strange portal in her uncle’s house, leading to madness and terror in this gripping new novel from the author of the “innovative, unexpected, and absolutely chilling” (Mira Grant, Nebula Award–winning author) The Twisted Ones.

Pray they are hungry.

Kara finds the words in the mysterious bunker that she’s discovered behind a hole in the wall of her uncle’s house. Freshly divorced and living back at home, Kara now becomes obsessed with these cryptic words and starts exploring this peculiar area—only to discover that it holds portals to countless alternate realities. But these places are haunted by creatures that seem to hear thoughts…and the more one fears them, the stronger they become.

With her distinctive “delightfully fresh and subversive” (SF Bluestocking) prose and the strange, sinister wonder found in Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s LabyrinthThe Hollow Places is another compelling and white-knuckled horror novel that you won’t be able to put down.

The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher. Releases in October 2020 from Gallery/Saga Press. I absolutely loved The Twisted Ones last year, and I’m thrilled to see a new Kingfisher horror story coming out, just in time for Halloween!

  1. Sarah

You’re right- these are all super exciting! The Harrow one sounds very different from 10K Doors. And the Kingfisher one sounds phenomenal… though I guess I still need to read The Twisted Ones.

I think Harrow’s new book sounds really different, and I’m so curious to see how her sophomore book goes:-)

  2. So I added The Once and Future Witches to my wishlist before the cover was even revealed. It sounds good and has one of my trigger words – witch. I also saw The Hollow Places somewhere recently and I’m sure it’s on that wishlist as well. Some great books this week and the plus is that the two I’m interested in are already on my wishlist so technically I’m not adding any 🙂

  3. I am curious about the first one and the third one on your list. Though the Kingfisher one sound a little to much like rehashing of her first book with different characters so that worries me. I thought The Twisted Ones was okay, but I do want to try the author again.

I’m hoping she has just as much humor in her new one as The Twisted Ones. That’s one reason I loved it so much.

  4. This time around all 3 interest me. I have ebook editions of The Ten Thousand Doors of January and Velocity Weapon. I really need to get to those so I can read these new ones, though it looks like I could read the Witches book with no worries. And The Hollow Places just sounds great. I loved Pan’s Labyrinth. If this has any of that wonder in it I suspect I’ll enjoy the book.

  5. Oh wow- all three of these sound fantastic! I LOVE the look of Chaos Vector (that cover is amazing) and The Hollow Places looks awesome too. Plus Harrow’s new one, which reminds me I need to get Ten Thousand Doors soon!!!

I’ve had the Alix Harrow book on my Goodreads TBR for a while, but the cover just popped up. So excited!

  6. Okay, I DEFINITELY need to read The Once and Future Witches! My gosh, that sounds all sorts of fabulous. The Hollow Places sounds absolutely chilling, and I really need to read that, too. But … maybe during the day? With all the lights on? And the doors locked. Surrounded by big, fluffy, protect dogs. Just in case.
